"Beer is normally taken internally." Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995)…read more Kudos to Duluth for their 1st Beerfest! The area where the festival took place was beautiful. The tents were laid out well (not too crowded) with a great selection of booths. Most of the major Atlanta/Georgia breweries were well-represented (Red Hare, Monday Night, Sweetwater, Terrapin, to name a few). The VIP area was well sponsored by Yelp with fun games/activities (cards, cornhole and a giant Jenga set) and free schwag! Plus, there were some fancier beers and free food to be had. Plus, a free Woodchuck backpack and cool 48oz beer stein. VIP also allowed you into the event 1 hour early to get your beer on before the masses arrived. Also, we had some food trucks for lining the stomach (much needed with all that beer) - Tex's Tacos, a frozen custard truck (forgot the name), and Slope's BBQ. Plus, the Frozen Pints team was out with beer ice cream as well as Happy Hour Confections (boozy cupcakes and brownies). Unlike other beerfests, this was a tamer (less sauced) crowd. It was quite enjoyable despite the humidity and threat of rain. Very well done, Duluth.

Duluth has a pleasant downtown area with some cute shops, restaurants, and a nice outdoor green…read more The Duluth Beerfest (held the first Saturday of every June, I've been told) is a really nice way to enjoy this area. There were over 100 different types of beer available for tasting, far too many to try them all! Because of this, I decided to focus just on comparing the dark beers and ciders; my boyfriend was more adventurous (or less focused?) and tried them randomly. I found the people pouring to be very pleasant and informative, whether they were volunteers or representing their own brewing companies. There were also booths for non-beer places, like Costco, the Atlanta Hawks, the Atlanta Roller Derby team, or Dave & Busters. And Yelp, too, of course, which had the best booth of all with a variety of free swag, cornhole, and life-size Jenga! The festival had some fun, festival-appropriate bands playing, too. My only criticism would be the at-the-gate price of $45. Even with 8-ounce pours, it'd be hard to drink anywhere near that amount of beer, so make sure to purchase tickets ahead of time and save $10. The price did ensure that there were never long lines at any of the booths. VIP tickets got you some premium beers (with high ABV and/or high prices), food like veggie platters and chicken fingers, and a wicked cool monstrous glass beer stein, as well as an hour to enjoy the festival before the general admission crowd. It was a beautiful day and a happy (but not sloppy) crowd, as you would expect for a beer festival!

I've been invited to the Liberty Park Chili Cook Off by my friend and coworker Ryan J. since the…read moreevent's first year (2008). However, I did not make it out to my first one until this past Saturday, the 4th annual edition and apparently biggest one yet. I was told for the first two years, the cook off was held at the organizers' home in Liberty Park, a townhome community in Westside Atlanta. The last two years, it's been held at Red Brick Brewing Company (formerly ABC) just around the corner. Nearly 200 people attended this year's cook off. Admission to the event cost $20, which was good for one beer glass of unlimited Red Brick beer and tastings of the 25+ chilis until supplies lasted. Proceeds above the cost of hosting the event went to the National MS Society. I decided to attend the chili cook off the week of and was pleasantly surprised to find out that my friend Jimmy M. (Angela M's husband) was entering his own chili into the contest for the first time. Even more reason for me to go. Each chili could win any of three awards: (1) Best Unusual, (2) Spiciest, and (3) Best Overall. Ryan won the spiciest category for the 4th year in a row. The reigning spicy champ has brought his leftover chili into the office in years past and burned the mouths of many. This year, his version was dubbed "Fire in the Hole" and made generous use of dried and fresh habaneros. I ate an entire small bowlful of it and was out of chili-tasting-commission for a good 10-15 minutes. I must admit, it did make me tear it up little. Ryan won by a landslide. If there was an award for best presentation, he would've won that too since his chili was surrounded by a plethora of dried peppers. The winner for "Best Unusual" was the "Pho Chili" based on the popular Vietnamese beef noodle soup. I think most everyone, including myself, voted for this one. It was the only chili on the floor that was not self-serve. You handed your bowl to the makers (one of which was wearing a totally awesome bright red Sriracha t-shirt) and they would add the ingredients in the following order: (1) chili meat, (2) pho broth, (3) vegetables. I smelled the broth before I ate any of the chili and it was hot and fragrant, just like an actual bowl of pho! How unique and original. "Three Guys, One Brisket" won best overall chili. One of my former coworkers, Megan P, was telling me how good this chili was and how she "helped" make it by watching and drinking beer. It was undoubtedly the sweetest tasting chili of the bunch. I liked it. The sauce reminded me most of traditional sweet Georgia BBQ sauces. Jimmy M's (and cooking partner Mark's) chili was similar to a Mexican mole sauce. Their chili was unique in that it made use of chocolate as a key ingredient. I thought it was the runniest of all the chilis, but still tasty and good enough to place 3rd for best overall chili. A good showing since it was their first time. Other chilis I enjoyed were Josh H's jerk chicken chili and Jimmy S's pork green chili. Jimmy S. is one of the organizers of the event and you can read his take on it on his blog, "Eat It, Atlanta" (http://www.eatitatlanta.com/2011/02/06/chili-cook-off-2011/). Overall, I had a good time. Parking was plentiful outside and since we were in Red Brick's warehouse/brewery, there was plenty of space inside (although some of the stations did get a little crowded). I look forward to attending next year's cook off where there will hopefully be even more and better chilis. #Yelp365 - 39/365

I'm sure that within another 20 years there will be 7 or 8 suburbs even further out than these. There's a large Asian population here, and nearly 100,000 people if you include all the illegals in the spare rooms. That's a joke by the way.
