I am not a poutine connoisseur, but the menu revealed lots of enticing sandwiches, many of which have an American deli look to them, so my husband and I ventured off to investigate for lunch one Saturday. Love the look of this new place - big menu on the wall, enticing displays of porchetta and other meats, as well as yummy homemade sweet things on display. We ordered at the front, and then our food was brought out to us at a communal table. We shared a salt beef sandwich, which tasted a lot like those back in my home country. Bread wasn't as good as a proper American deli, but the flavor of the pickle and the mustard adding a tang to the corned beef (aka salt beef) was so familiar. The meat was really tender and felt fresh, not heavy and oppressive as these big sandwiches can seem. We got a side of kracklin with apple jam - this is, of course, pork rinds (fried skin/fat). It's crunchy like a bag of crisps, but tastes like pork, which is weird, but also kind of delicious. My husband wasn't a massive fan, but I like all things salty and crispy, and thought the apple jam alongside was fantastic. We met one of my friends there by total coincidence, who got the poutine, and said it needed more cheese. She was impressed that they actually managed to find cheese curds, as they don't seem to exist in the UK, but they get them from a local dairy. Win! One of the owners said she was surprised and excited by how well the business was going, and hoping to expand the menu even more soon - right now it's just a couple of sandwiches and sides, albeit very creative ones that you can't get anywhere else. A welcome change from the usual boring sandwich shops you find everywhere, we'll be back for sure!

Poutine should have a thick, rich gravy and the cheese curds should not be cold. The french fries were OK I guess but I want something more for my money than just OK.

Fear not, the queue of mainly students goes really fast. Have your £1 ready and you can have your baguette and 1p change in a matter of minutes. The place is pretty small (the queue extends outside a lot) and there's table benches to sit on either side. There's additional seating downstairs now too. Aside from the popular baguette, there's a selection of canned soft drinks and sandwiches from the cooler on the right and a hot drinks machine on the left (not sure what they did with the hot food thing which housed pasties etc). On the menu is also baked potatoes and panninis and there's also a breakfast menu too for early risers. There's so many different fillings that you could probably go everyday for a month and still.not tried everything. The staff deal with everything very quickly and say minimum words so don't expect to hold any conversations. The food. Well, I've only tried the baguette. It's alright. It does the job and for 99p, you can't really complain. The baguette is fresh and crunchy and there is a decent amount of the filling. It may not be the best quality food but seriously, who cares if you want food to save you from certain starvation?

Quirky décor with a mish mash of wooden tables and chairs with some on slightly elevated positions near the window where you can soak in the hustle and bustle of the city centre. The food is fabulous! I often take advantage of the breakfast menu which is served until 2pm....the pancakes with bacon and maple syrup are highly recommended. They also offer a range of sandwiches, jacket potatoes and cakes. No WiFi frustratingly so I do have to move on if I am intending to do work for any length of time. The staff are very friendly however and I have been here so many times recently I am only one coffee away from my free drink using my stampcard! Finally don't miss out on Blake's monthly comedy night after hours and each Friday they showcase live music so don't be fooled into thinking Blake's is just a coffee house open in traditional hours!

I'm not sure why.... Out of all the sandwich lunch-y style shops, this is a first choice for me. Although it is expensive (sorry Miss Bank Account!), it is well worth it. The quality of food is always so good and fresh and their recipes are tasty! There's a good pace of updating the menu (loving the hot food choices in this cold weather) and there's a good range of warm beverages to help bring some feeling back to those frozen fingers. I can't say there is much seating room at this particular branch and the staff are not very good. They just stood around, chatting and blocking up the food and would not excuse themselves but instead kept bumping into me whilst talking very animatedly to a friend. I am very sad that I had to leave with an empty stomach.

It's not cheap at £1.99 (or £1.94) after the VAT reduction, but it's well worth every penny. First off, they use really good coffee. I often feel robbed when buying coffee from café's in town because it tends towards milky water. Not this coffee, it's rich, full of flavour and does the trick to wake me up before work. The way they foam the milk is also top notch, making it thick and creamy. I usually take sugar in my coffee but it seems a shame to spoil this coffee with sugar. The food is also superb. I recommend the Bacon and Cheese Croissant. It's absolutely divine, although again, at £1.89, it's not cheap! The service in this particular store is excellent. I tend to be in there around 8am before work, and although they have queues at this time, it takes less than five minutes to get my coffee. The staff are always very polite and friendly, they stock daily newspapers and they even have tables outside if you want to have a smoke with your coffee. All in all, five star coffee shop. And this applies to both of them in Newcastle, as I shop in both depending on which Metro I get.
