We contracted Nate to replace our driveway and porch steps in 2022. He was rarely on site to…read moremanage a sloppy crew who left concrete chunks in our landscaping, concrete wash in the street gutter, splatter on our bushes and metal pieces in our lawn that we picked up for a week. The crew also cut our landscaping lighting line which my husband fixed afterwards. We sucked it up and let that go, the driveway and steps seemed ok, although the driveway edging on one side is jagged instead of a smooth edge and when I pointed it out, he blamed that on us saying we said it was okay to follow the landscape rock edge, so now if we ever replaced the landscaping rock wall, we have a jagged edged driveway that looks like crap. I've never seen a driveway look like that and would have never have thought that was a good look or approved that. The stairs, now later have a long wide crack along the entire step. His crew also cut a saw line straight up the center of the two solid steps- never have seen that on anyone's steps. He said it was to prevent cracking and obviously that did not prevent it cracking. The base corner of one step is also disintegrated. The driveway has pitting and the surface is crumbling in areas. I emailed Nate twice to ask about his process to address the issues, he never responded, so I called and he told me I should have told him earlier and that he can't fix everyone's cracks in his jobs and definitely not for free. He argued with me, so I basically said so you're telling me there's nothing you can or will do and I was so angry I hung up, what a waste of a call. It would have been courteous of him to be understanding of our disappointment of such an expense. I told him I would be making sure our neighbors knew I would not recommend his company. It was only after that call ended that he texted and offered to come look at it and IF it was something simple, he would fix it. I sent him the address and haven't heard from him since. His friends in the area were quick to jump to his defense on line and bully me on line for posting my opinion to not recommend his company. Nate is charming to get the job and your check and afterwards is rude, difficult to deal with, unresponsive and always argues that he is right, never apologizes in any way for any problems that you encounter. Find someone else for these expensive projects. I have dealt with many other contractors for our home who care about you after their work which has been quality, is complete and always are happy to check in to ensure you are satisfied down the road. A little humility and genuine care goes a long way, and this is not that guy.

On August 2, he sent me a text that he was showing up in 3 minutes. Good thing I was working at home. We start talking about the project. Now, he didn't want to do what we asked him to do back in March. Now, it seemed like he wanted to do what was quickest job so he could get his crew to the next site. Mind you, he had my deposit so there was no backing out now. After some back and forth, we agreed on the work needed. The project was supposed to begin on August 6. The next day, August 3rd, Nate sent me a text that the crew was arriving in 3 minutes. I was in a business meeting as it was the middle of the day. Nate asked me to remind the job leader of many tasks as Nate, the boss, wasn't coming to the job site. Now, me, the customer, had somehow become the foreman. These guys made a mess. They wrecked my irrigation system. I planned to move some sprinkler heads due to their work, but in their haste, they just cut buried lines left and right. They moved my AC unit, per Nate's suggestion. They left it crooked and un-leveled. I had to deal with getting it moved back. They broke a gutter downspout and damaged newly planted trees. Their haphazard power washing took paint off my house and garage door (they were trying to clean concrete that they splattered). I have a video of the kid who did the power washing asking an older worker if he should tell me. The older guy told him not to let me know about it. Overall, the concrete looked nice enough, but it was not perfect. There were flaws. Some caused by the workers. For example, one worker turned on the water spigot over fresh concrete. It caused corrosion. Nate promised to fix it, but that never happened. Nate wanted to be paid in full before the work was done. He added a bunch of miscellaneous fees to the bill on the spot. For example, he wanted $350 for a downspout drain. He claimed I sent his worker shopping for it. I did no such thing. His workers damaged ours, but told me not to worry about it because they had one "at the warehouse." They showed up the next day with about $7.00 worth of mismatched PVC to replace it. To add insult to injury, when I was paying the bill, Nate told me to finish installing the drain (which they buried), myself. We had freshly planted trees. Nate's crew leaned a Kubota tractor against them. Further, they laid large metal plates down which sunk in the ground. I took photos and videos throughout the project and incidentally captured what they did to our trees, which were all bent and leaning. I brought it to Nate's attention and his response was, "I'm not a landscaper." All the neighbors warned me about Nate. They suggested that everyone knew Nate by name and continued to use him because there was nobody else in the area. However, everyone had the same story to tell about him. Be prepared. The workers did not clean up. They left pop cans, candy wrappers, garbage, razor blades, and nails everywhere. I had to police the area nightly to clean up. I should have gotten a discount for all the work I had to do. They will ruin your lawn and your neighbors, too. Both of my side neighbors came out talked with his crew multiple times as his workers were not respectful to their properties. I had three big projects lined up for that summer: landscaping, exterior painting, and stamped concrete. We hired Nate first. He was last to start his project and he managed to ruin our landscaping and painting. We had painters, landscapers, deckers, and other contractors out, and he was by far the worst to deal with. I sure hope his concrete lasts and was worth all the stress and aggravation. Yes, the concrete looked nice, but we had to rectify what they broke. I can tell you that the concrete needed to be resealed relatively quickly after installation.

Josh was friendly, professional and knowledgeable and answered all our questions and provided a reasonable quote. Not only did we need a new driveway but we also decided on replacing the sidewalk and adding a back yard patio. Juan, the owner and his entire crew were so friendly and professional and really take pride in their work. October 28,2024 was tear out day and November 1, 2024 was pouring the concrete day. Everything went as scheduled and looks really great and definitely added value and curb appeal to our home. We can't wait to get back out there and fill in the surrounding areas with dirt and grass seed and finally get to use our stored patio furnishings. If you need concrete work PLEASE give them a call and I'm sure you will not be disappointed. UPDATED 11/17/2024 two weeks after my initial review. I emailed Juan the owner of 4WAY cement twice now since pouring our driveway on 11/1/2024 regarding the concrete sealer. He said he was going to seal the new driveway on Tuesday 11/5/2024 and both my emails have gone unanswered and the driveway still not sealed as of 11/17/2024. I may be dropping a star or two if our driveway isn't sealed by month's end. Stay tuned!

They completed the project in record time, even fitting me in ahead of schedule, which was a huge relief considering spring rains were on their way. The crew was fantastic--professional, friendly, and respectful of my property. They communicated with me every step of the way, answering all my questions quickly and thoroughly, sending me photos of the work to assuage any concerns. It was clear that they take great pride in their work, and they left my yard in perfect condition, cleaning up meticulously after the job was done. One wrench in the project was that I had an invisible fence line that ran through multiple areas of excavation, and I knew there was no chance that line wasn't going to be cut. What really blew me away, was that Cristian went out and repaired the damage and the line works perfectly again; talk about above and beyond! A week later, the drainage system works perfectly, and my yard is shockingly dry considering the recent heavy rain. I highly recommend Hills Excavation for any complicated and muddy yard-related needs--they exceeded my expectations in every way and I'm glad I no longer feel like Shrek telling people to, "get out of my swamp!"
