April 25, 2020. Miss Rhode Island's favorite date: "April 25th -- because it's not too hot, not too cold. All you need is a light jacket!"
I always hear about people hiking Mt. Baldy so we used this perfect beautiful Spring day to pop our Mt. Baldy cherry and get some fresh air and sunshine.
The drive to the trailhead was very straightforward. Just type in Mt. Baldy Trailhead and google maps does the rest. Most of the snow has melted here in Anchorage but we brought our snow cleats just in case and thank goodness we did! There's still some snow/slush on the trail especially the closer you get to the peak. Hiking poles would've made the trek much easier/safer. For two newbies, a dog, and 2 year old in tow this was a pretty difficult hike. Steep in some areas plus snow/slush? Yeah it's short but it took us a while to get down as we didn't want to end up injured. Definitely would've been more manageable if we had hiking poles to help keep our footing. Going down the trial was the most difficult part as the snow was straight up slush and we literally slid down the mountain in certain areas. Just felt safer to do this than try to walk and lose footing and end up falling down the trail.
I'm interested to see how it is in the Summer. Probably more populated (although today we came across a good number of hikers). If there wasn't snow or slush it was muddy so just be prepared.
9 out of 10 of the dogs we saw were off leash so just be mindful of that if you have little ones or a dog that doesn't get along with others. I kept ours leashed on the way up and let her traverse down at her leisure.
If you're a novice hikerlike me and go during this time frame/ if I were to do it again tomorrow I'd bring : good hiking boots/shoes, snow cleats, hiking poles, windbreaker (got very windy near the peak), sunglasses, gloves (I wore the inserts to my snowboarding gloves but snow gloves would've made sliding down the slush much more fun), backpack or hydration pack read more
