I took my 4 year old for her first haircut. She is AA with natural thick/curly hair. They were friendly and gentle but our stylist required a lot of supervision which was not available the entire time. Half way through the cut she asked if I wanted layers or not. She didn't blow dry the hair well and the cut was not too my standards. I won't go to a beauty school for a blow dry and cut anymore. read more

Let me begin with saying this -- I have extremely thick/coarse natural 4C hair and I'm extremely apprehensive about visiting hair salons, let alone a beauty school. But let me tell you, the students and instructors at this academy were very knowledgeable. If you have natural hair, this is the place! That being said, I came in for a shampoo and roller set which was $10, not including tip. The student stylist was gentle with my hair and any questions that she had was promptly answered by the instructors. I left the academy with a head full of curls, and will definitely be returning again! read more

OMG! I have been taking my daughter to Ms Roberts since she was 12, she's now 28. I just got an absolutely awesome color and Cut for my sons upcoming wedding. It was all hands on deck and I LOVE the look. I truly LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the look. I hope the student take all the knowledge that Ms Roberts and her teachers have to offer. 10+ read more

I had the WORST experience at Ms. Robert's Beauty School. Treasure was my stylist, first of all I had to wait for her about 15 min to start my hair. Her attitude said she didn't want to do hair. Secondly, my hair is thin and I wanted rods. She made the parts so big even though I specifically said "I want small curls" one of her classmates said "wow Treasure, you finished that quick". Lastly, she left me under the dryer after it stopped, the instructor told her your client is dry. She said you want to finish her cause I gotta go, Unbelievable! Maybe you're in the wrong field BooBoo! read more

I usually come here if I want things done that's not to difficult. The wait sucks sometimes but for what you pay I can't complain. I haven't had a bad experience here since I've been coming for at least 10 yrs. I would recommend it so with that being said let me get my braids done!!! read more

Terrible Experience. The teachers do not know how to do curly kinky hair properly. I tried to tell the instructor about my concerns that had to do with their insistence 1 detangling my hair dry, and not thoroughly washing my scalp because they were trying to avoid my hair matting, but the but the owner has no intentions on teaching the students to effectively care for curly hair. read more

Ms. Roberts Beauty Academy - I got this hair do at Ms. Roberts Academy a couple months ago and going back to get a repeat. I love the place. - Cosmetology Schools Near Me - Hillside, Illinois

This is the WORST place to get your hair done! The owner is a total bi*ch, the students are not supervised like they are sussposed to be. I understand that the students are in training to be licensed beauticians, but they will mess you up if you don't speak up! My daughter is not tender headed and can take perms well. The girl that did her hair burned my daughter and made her cry. The last time I went there, I wanted a little bit of hair cut off my back and sides. She almost made me completely bald and left the hair at the top. When I looked in the mirror, I was disgusted. Now I have to wait until my hair grows out before I can do anything with it. I will pay more and go to a regular beauty shop. They will not get another penny, nickel or dime out of me. Lesson learned. Never again! read more

I understand this is a school, but this place was AWFUL. I expected it to be a bit like the Aveda school--the people there are learning, but are professionals, and there are instructors nearby. Not at all. I got a facial and manipedi. The facial was ok, but the towels they used had a lot of hairs stuck to them (gross!!!). They didn't have any good quality nail polish, and there weren't many color options. The polish I chose wound up being really old, and the girl who was doing my nails didn't tell me until it was too late (I wasn't paying attention when she was doing my toes). She should have told me and suggested I pick a different one. She took *forever* and got nail polish everywhere. I honestly could have done a much better job myself. The polish was so gross and gloppy that it never dried completely and smeared before I got to the car. I had to take it all off when I got home. It was absolutely not worth anything. Terrible experience. The place wasn't set up to take clients, and it was dirty and uncomfortable. A bunch of students were just standing around, flirting and messing with each other the entire time I was there. I don't understand why they had *nothing* to do for over an hour. NEVER GO HERE. read more

I've been here before. I receive a warm welcome from Mona the students. Which she did my hair and was very gentle and knowledgeable. And the instructor was definitely on point in making sure you are very satisfied and happy with your hair. And I was very satisfied with hair. read more

I have been going to Ms. Roberts since the day they open and I never really any major problems with them; It was only one time my hair got messed up which is awesome going to a beauty school the only con I have is it take too long you end up being there all day! But other than that everything is else is fine and I would recommend this place to anyone who doesn't have the means to be able to afford a regular licensed beautician. read more

hit or miss.. depends on what student you get, they got ALL new students .. young, so they really can't do new styles & cuts just the basics.. all the others have graduated Katie was great, my style might last a week, I'll pay the extra $20 bucks and see my reg. stylist at her shop... cause sometimes ms roberts can be a "ms mess!!" read more

I get my hair styled at Ms Roberts Academy in hillside and @ 1st I was sceptic because they were students. They are being monitored by instructors that takes time out for each individual. They take great care of my hair and uses only the best products. The entire place is very clean including the bathroom. They don't mind answering your questions regarding your hair. The instructors are very nice, such a warm & friendly environment. Needless to say I've been going there weekly for eight years. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!... read more

The customer service is poor. Ms Tinas son is rude and inconsiderate. I made an appointment with a specific student--as offered by the shop. The student did not come to school that day. Understandably that occurs, what shouldn't occur is that I wasn't informed when I arrived and before I paid for my service. The owner's son, took my $55 payment for flat twist on natural hair AND gave my appointment ticket to another student whom I did not make an appointment with. I should have been informed when I arrived, that the student didn't arrive. I even received a text message that morning inquiring if I was coming to appointment and I answered yes--so my arrival was not a surprise. If he had explained upon my arrival she wasn't there I would have had a choice as to whether I wanted to continue with service and pay. Because I paid with a debit card, I will not get a refund for 3-5 business days. So my time and my money were trifled with. I understand management has no control over students commitment but they also should not assume that a customer would acquiesce to another student doing ones hair. A specific appointment was made with a specific person--perhaps remove that option, but certainly don't take my money and give me anyone because the business doesn't want to lose a sale. read more

Wow I have been going there since the day the school opened and I've never seen or experienced anything closely akin to what is described here. And the expansion for the advanced students is absolutely fabulous. No one would invest that kind of money to provide inferior services and products. I would have to question someone's motive for saying these things. Was this a plant to attempt to discredit the school. Things that make you go ummmn! read more

It is a great academy to attend as a customer for several years I realize how fortunate I am to find this jewel in the crown. The students and instructors make sure you are satisfied with the outcome. I have gotten keratin treatment for a while at the Academy and they are the best in this treatment. . The cost is extremely economical. I give them five star plus! read more

Erin M. and her review is completely inaccurate. I've been to the school and recieved a mani/pedi/style. There were teachers around to help the STUDENTS, they had a variety of new polishes to choose from. i really didnt see anyone standing around because it was busy. They had new towels- no gunk and hair on them, from what i could see.. personally if you were expecting the school to be like aveda, you should've went to aveda. It's a school and those young ladies/gentlemen are there to learn. read more

My stylist was very nice and I appreciate her effort. But the floor instructor should have checked the sewing pattern so that my hairstyle would be even. I arrived early for my appointment, only two people were present, the salon was clean and organized. The hair stylist braided my hair, then I was told I needed to purchase a cap. This should have been told prior to arrival and they should have them there for purchase if needed by a customer. So, I left the school to get a cap to protect my hair per the instructions of the stylist. But, after 3 days my hair began to get loose and I had to resew some of the tracks so they would not fall anymore. After this, I reviewed videos online to see everyone cut the cap off at the top to eliminate a bulkiness at the crown of the head. Instead, she cut off the bottom. In my opinion, the floor instructor should have been paying close attention to the student because everyone else was getting wet sets. When I got home and wet my hair to curl it the hair was uneven, thicker on one side, and longer than the other. As much as I enjoyed the fact that the location was close I do believe floor instructors should be watching the students more closely to ensure that clients can get close to what they are paying for and to help the students. Had the instructor caught this she could have rebraided the crown of my head. It was my hope to have this style last at least a few months it is evidently clear that it will be only a few weeks at best. It was not bad enough for me to not return, but next time I will pay attention to detail since the instructors were not. read more

I am very impressed with the instructors. They support and encourage the students to do there best. I am however disappointed with the clients...they forget it is a school and the students are learning. I have seen some great work come from these students. They are hard working and professional young ladies trying to learn new skills....thumbs up to them read more

I've been going to this school every two weeks for the last three months. I only go for a manipedi and every experience I've had has been delightful. The technicians have been so very pleasant and considerate. There are always a teacher observing the students as they work. I've never had to wait more 10 mins for someone to start my manicure. The manager is very nice and constantly walking around checking on the customers. read more

I've frequented this location a few times for hair services and have been disappointed 2 of the 3. Let me start by saying as a black healthcare professional I'm all for supporting our black owned businesses and encouraging all that pursue their goals in whatever industry. My first visit to this beauty school I stood at the desk for a minute with no notice whatsoever... no 'I'll be with soon' or anything. The second visit, I was greeted and registered right away; assigned to a student who washed, conditioned and rinsed my hair but didn't know how to comb it... she started with a wig brush on my wet hair and I asked if she could use a comb. I could tell she still didn't know how to comb the hair and to avoid snagging and pulling my hair I asked her to allow me to do it ... the instructor stopped me to say, ' You're not suppose to do that' 'They're in school and how else can they learn?' Ok understood but if you see that your student is doing something incorrectly should you not stop them and instruct them? ( I'm thinking). So she stops to teach the student the correct way. Then she sits me in the chair of another student ( one of her best, she says) for the next step (blow dry 'n style). I try and explain to this student the side I wear my part, etc. and she says: 'Just relax, I know what I'm doing...Just be quiet'. Totally taken off guard, ( thinking to myself, 'Did she just tell me, 'Just be quiet?'). Now, I'm really upset and I repeat what she said to see if I was hearing her correctly and she agreed that yes she said, 'Just be quiet'. At this point, ( the instructor watching and listening apparently) I asked for a refund wanting no further service my hair still dripping wet... the instructor then says, 'We don't usually give refunds'... ( looking at me as if I shouldn't be upset and taking things way out of proportion as if I was overreacting) "Do you want me to do your hair" she says,.... I replied, well something should be done starting with telling your student she should never tell a customer to 'Just be quiet'...She said or did nothing apparently upset with me herself tightening the plastic cover over me. She finished my hair but never apologized for anything... I know this is a pretty long review but I felt the need to illustrate as a professional that 'attitude and professionalism' is a must in any business.. This instructor is rude, ignorant uncaring and very unprofessional ... She talks to people like their imbeciles or children. This is not the place of business I'd ever want to go to or recommend to anyone again... Respect is a must where I'm concerned. read more
