The 500-passenger, M.S. Dixie II is the largest cruising vessel in South Lake Tahoe so I surprised my girlfriend on a cruise. It was fairly easy to find and we got there early cause I didnt wanna walk far and we got there to relax and wanted to walk around the marina area. It was a beautiful evening setting. Pictures were taken before you boarded the cruise ship. The walk up to the M.S Dixie II made the anticipation grow with each step to our cruise. The cruise was scheduled to be 2 hours. One hour of dining, one hour of siteseeing on the boat with ascenic evening setting and dancing and listening to good live music. We were seated in the middle of the boat which was ok even though I wanted a window seat so we could enjoy the boat ride. First up, the scenic ride and ordering dinner. For our first course we received some bread rolls and field baby lettuces. The lettuce came with fresh mozzarella, red tomatoes, white balsamic vinaigrette, with a balsamic glase. The rolls were normal; nothing fancy and the salad was actually pretty tasty. That probably was the best part of the meal but take that back, I did eat all of my french fries but we will get to that later. For dinner, we both ordered the Grilled Ribeye Steak. The Grilled Steak came with loaded potato gratin and a broccolini with a green peppercorn sauce. I decided to order fries with my steak because I don't eat broccoli or potato gratin. The Grilled Ribeye was medium well but ended up being dry and not tasty at all. We gave up on the steak after a few bites. Let's just say, it was time for the second hour and to get out of this dining room. The views outside were epic. Cruising to emerald bay and seeing the Vikingsholm and the people outside the house waiving to you was very nice! Seeing Emerald Bay up close to personal was so beautiful and the views around the huge mountains was truly majestic. Probably won't go on the cruise again but was definitely a wonderful experience! read more

At least it's over! This is the second negative review I've done in my lifetime but I think it's worth it to warn you. Half of the passengers had to wait on deck as the "second seating" group because the company double booked the dining room. This meant lovely ladies, babies, seniors and the rest of us who had dressed for an outdoor optional dinner cruise were sitting either in the very windy and increasingly chilly deck area or in a tiny bar room full of drunken 20s something men and a live "band" of 70s something individuals who played elevator music and sang off-key so loudly, it hurt your ears unless you were indeed quite lit. Now, the 20s something men were fine because they boarded in such a state. In fact, one of their first orders of business was to ensure the lavatories were almost unbearable to use in any form of dress other than muck boots and a hazmat suit. The smell alone was more breathtaking than the scenery; a lot like a kennel for very old and very sick animals. However, the giftshop offered an array of over priced sweatshirts and jackets to anyone who couldn't stand the (I assume) paid entertainment. This way, only half of you would freeze while sitting in the wind for an hour and a half wile listening to the live action roleplay of Lord of The Flies by the previously mentioned young men. Finally, it was time for "second seating". The first half of passengers seated in the dining room were now booted out to trade places with the hungry, wind-blown peasants on the decks. Dinner? Think hospital cafeteria circa 1997. Stained, cardboard ceiling tiles, tiny tables shared with mostly nice strangers, sad women with apologetic boyfriends and husbands, a baby with a wind-chaffed face and everyone annoyed beyond what the scenery could help. All EXCEPT the young men who by now had run up a bar tab of over 4 thousand-dollars (bartender was asked). These young men made sure no one got lost in their thoughts, wandered down memory lane or even wandered to the now un-usable facilities. The noise they produced likely scared off any wildlife for good and the rest of the patrons turned to lip-reading, or gave up conversation all-together. The food was food in an academic sense. The rolls were reminiscent of store-brand, bagged, bread-like substance, two huge inedible stems with a little broccoli at the top and steak seasoned with salt, smoke flavoring and coated in an extremely salty, brown and jelly-like substance. The "cheesecake"? LOL It's the powdered mix and refrigerate stuff you get for 40 cents a metric ton and not as good as the jell-o brand. After three hours, everyone was hugging the exit to get off this luxury liner as soon as possible. By this time, the passengers who had been kicked out of the dining room for "second seating" had become a quivering mass of very cold, uncomfortable and disappointed prisoners on a boat out of a fever dream. Most of the staff was fine but there was this one wearing all black, very young looking, who may be in training for work at some place of government sanctioned incarceration. You see, there is a red painted area of the bow where the gang plank is lowered for boarding and also for running away (based on observation). All passengers were to wait behind a yellow line as the boat docked. This was never announced, but if you were one of the happy few at the yellow line, a very pleasant young man explained this. One unfortunate girl walked out of the dining room, directly onto the red painted area (the exit doesn't have an alternative to the red deck) and she was shouted at to, "Get back in the dining room, now"! Indeed, it was our prison guard in black who visibly scared the girl. No explanation follow, until another passenger at the door asked in a rather brisk tone. I suppose it's legal and safety related, however an announcement may have been more hospitable, not that anyone could hear anything with the frat boys yelling and the prison band going. Finally, back on the bus to catch a ride to our vehicles, only this time the bus took the scenic route to drop off about 7 people out of 50 or so. It had to pass our drop off location to do this and then turn around. It's not the driver's fault, just the way everything was set up. The bus driver, Paul, has some of the worst jokes on the planet. Not that these jokes were offensive, they just leave you with a sense that you've done something very wrong in a past life. To be fair, he offered the mic up several times to anyone who had a good joke. We did not. So, Paul entertained us for another 50 minutes after we escaped Nurse Ratchet's floating cafeteria. It was so bad, we laughed all the way home, even as we took a blood oath to NEVER book anything with this company again. read more

10 Stars for the view. The live band was fun and watching the paddle was super cool. We were lucky to go the weekend after a fall snow storm so the mountains were snow capped but the temps were decent enough to enjoy the view from outside. Dinner was fine but we were hoping for a little more. The salmon had nice seasoning and was cooked well but the steak was dry and bland. The salad and cheesecake were partially frozen. The rolls were over warmed so they were hard by the time we buttered them. I imagine food prep on a boat is tricky but it seemed rushed. We were also bummed for the earth that most was disposable tableware. The interior could use a little touching up too. It just seems dated and a little cold. We did the afternoon cruise, excellent scenery as to be expected with any Tahoe cruise but the tour felt like it was a little too long, after the first hour everyone was kind of falling asleep. The food was not great we both got the grilled cheese with tomato soup, while the soup wasn't bad the overwhelming flavor of the sandwich was that of a dirty grill, just tasted like old grease that hadn't been cleaned in a while. The boat itself was launched in 1994 and I don't think it's been updated since then, things looked very dated, I found it rather humorous that the recorded narration bragged of how the boat boasted the latest technology. Obviously the recording hasn't been updated in 30 years either. We did the Rum Runner cruise a couple of years ago highly recommend that one over this if everyone in your party is over 21. read more

This company is completely unorganized... Stayed at Harrah's and was happy to hear that they would pick us up with a shuttle and take us to the boat. Our pickup was at the Harrah's valet at 2:35pm.... We called the desk and the female said to be on the lookout for a "White Shuttle with Zephyr Cove" written on it... We waited and waited... No shuttle matching that description showed up... We called the desk 3 more times after waiting a half hour, then she said the shuttle had already come and gone and that we'd have to get our own transportation!?!? We got a $40 taxi to make the boat trip. Come to find out afterwards that the shuttle is not what they described, but is, instead a bus that is not white, and has "Wilderness River Adventures" on the side!!! WTF? Called and talked to the manager who couldn't care less that they scr3wed us. What a mess. read more

TL;DR: provides nice views of Lake Tahoe and Emerald Bay, but not really a must-go attraction. Went here with fam on July 4th weekend for my Dad's bday. As it was a holiday weekend, parking was $15 as opposed to the normal $10 (you can use the complimentary shuttle service that picks up people in the vicinity if you want to avoid the parking fee.....and to avoid parking hassle as the lot isn't really huge). Long story short, views of Lake Tahoe and Emerald Bay from the boat were awe-inspiring.....during the first half of the cruise. Took the 2-hour cruise and at the point when the boat was circling back to Zephyr Cove, it seemed like people were already over it lol I mean I was. People looked much less excited during the second half of the cruise; they pretty much were already satisfied with the loads of videos and selfies they took. Not much else to do on the boat besides eating (the boat has a restaurant but during lunch hours the menu is pretty limited) and watching a documentary that looked like it was from the 90s (the video has that *iconic* damaged-VHS-tape graininess to it). Eh, if you're one of those people who is addicted to Facebook/IG/Snap and MUST take every opportunity to take nice selfies with your homegirl Mother Nature, then I guess this attraction is worth the price, but to me viewing the scenery just from the port was already good enough. read more

My daughter and I went on the scenic tour on our trip to Lake Tahoe and it was breathtaking. The boat wasn't overly crowded and the views were stunning. There was also a complimentary shuttle service which picked us up close to our hotel and the bus drivers were hilarious. After enjoying some time on the top deck, we made our way to the gift shop and the stopped at the cafe and ordered a drink and some french fries, which were hit, crispy and delicious! The bus was already waiting when we returned to the dock and the whole trip was well worth it. read more

Our first visit to Lake Tahoe and we did the scenic emerald bay day cruise 12-2pm. It was $100/adult. We had driven around the lake the day before and wanted to see emerald bay from the water. It was a nice boat ride, next time we visit, we prefer to take a private boat ride. This was nice for value. That had full bar and food available during the ride. Cocktails were around $11/$12 each, the bartender is very friendly and made delicious cocktails. Bathrooms were readily available on the 2nd floor deck. read more

A must do while in Lake Tahoe. We unfortunately didnt make it for our original booked date due to road issues . Thankfully they were able to reschedule us for the following day. The next day we made sure to arrive super early. We walked by the lake, took pictures and just took some time to admire the beautiful view before it was time to board the boat. So, a little fun fact. Before covid they would board 500 people. During covid 250, and on the Monday we went only 70 we're scheduled, AWESOME. Also, because it doesnt get as busy during this time of year parking was free. Food inside was pretty good. We ordered tomato soup and grilled cheese and it was delicious. Cocktails were $10 but nicely served. Service was great- very friendly. read more

The food is right up there with your local Denny's . If you're looking for 5 star fancy schmanzy dinner, you will be disappointed. (I'll just get that out of the way.) My review is strictly based on boat cruise experience. Tip: They serve free champagne as you board the Dixie on level 2 on the lounge area. You can have 1 or 2 until it's all gone. They serve dinner in 2 parts. If they tell you that you're sitting on 2nd level, you are eating about 1.5 hours after group 1. We were the 2nd group and as we finished our meal, the cruise was over. It was cool though because we got to see the beautiful lake and scenery while there was still light out. It's a 3 course dinner and it is not worth 100 dollars a person. (You can go to Ruby River in Reno and get a nice, fat aged steak with the fixings for 1/2 that price.) Dinner consisted of tomatoes, some lettuce greens, fresh looking mozzarella cheese and a drizzle of a sweet balsamic. I had the rib eye steak. It was a thin cut steak, nothing spectacular, served with bacon mashed potatoes and that hybrid type of broccoli spears. The dessert was a slice of cheesecake with a berry drizzle. I was happy with my over all experience. There's plenty of alcoholic and non- alcoholic beverages to choose from and the band keeps playing if you feel like dancing. It was a chill atmosphere, I had fun! read more

5/20/2023 We were gifted this experience for our honeymoon and it was a 3/5 for us. The cruise itself had really nice views and plenty of seating. I would recommend bringing a coat, it does get chilly towards the end of the 5pm departure. We had the second seating for dinner so once we made it to one side of the lake, we were seated which let us eat until we reached the other side of the lake which was quite nice. The downsides of this cruise is the amount of people onboard which sometimes leaves you feeling crowded and also the food was not very good and came out warm at best. However, the staff was incredibly nice which improved the experience for us. So my recommendations for this cruise is to bring a coat and dress accordingly for a chill, bring cash for a tip for your waiter, find your seating fast, check out the live band and drinks and enjoy the views !! read more

This was my first time at Lake Tahoe and my girlfriend bought us tickets for the noon excursion around the lake as an early birthday present. She said it was almost a requirement for first-time visitors to see the lake by water. Because it was early November, she said the lake wasn't crazy busy with tourists like the summer season. The MS Dixie was fairly full but it didn't seem like we were crammed in like sardines. And because it was slightly chilly, a number of people who started out sitting outside made a beeline for the indoors when the boat got underway and they felt the wind through their hair. The two and a half hour trip was very enjoyable. It was amazing to think the trek from Zephyr Cove to Emerald Bay was 20 miles. It was fascinating to see the deep blue water turn green as we ventured into the aptly named bay. Emerald Bay has an interesting history. Ben Holladay, owner of the Overland Stage Co., the Oregon & California Railroad and the founder of Seaside, Oregon, built a summer home near the south shore in 1862. He hired Capt. Dick Barter to serve as caretaker of his home. Dick almost died rowing back to the island during a bad storm. He amputated two of his toes after suffering frostbite and delighted in showing guests the toes. He built a chapel in which he planned to be buried when he died, but that never happened as he was lost to sea during an 1873 storm and his body was never recovered. The bay also contains Vikingsholm, a 38-room mansion built by Lora Josephine Knight in 1929. Knight and her husband Harry were the main financial backers for Charles Lindbergh when he made his non-stop solo flight across the Atlantic in 1927. The trip was quite enjoyable. Many people have written about the poor quality of the food offered onboard. That's pretty much the same for any boat excursion anywhere. We loaded up on burgers and onion rings from Izzy's in South Lake Tahoe and scarfed them as we drove to Zephyr Cove. read more

The boat was nice and very clean. The staff was extremely friendly as well, which made the dinner cruise a great experience. What wasn't so great, was the food and the service around the food. For example, you start with rolls and butter but you don't get plates. This lead to crumbs all over the table and people using the table as their plate. Some of the tomatoes in the salad seemed to not be the most fresh either. Five people at my table ordered steak. All five steaks looked the exact same even though they weren't ordered the same. My rare steak was cooked like a well done steak. The steak was very chewy and hard to swallow at times. About 1/4 of the steak wasn't edible. The sides were good and the cheesecake was good. Everything else besides the dinner, was fine and a good experience. This is something fun to do just once though. read more

This was a beautiful 2 hour boat tour to Fanette Island, Emerald Bay, and a view of Vikingsholm Castle. It crosses S Lake Tahoe, heads to Emerald Bay, and turns back. Food is available for purchase on board. On the menu you will find burgers, fish and chips, even a veggie burger. They also had fun themed cocktails like margaritas and rum runners. I had the rum runner and fish and chips. Yum! It's 99.00 for the scenic day cruise. Food/drinks were not included on my tour, but they were reasonably priced. Service was great! The bartender and server were fast and friendly. Going from 12-2:00 in October I thought it would be less crowded, but it was pretty packed. I was also worried since I get motion sickness sometimes, but that didn't happen! The water was calm, and the boat moves pretty slowly. All good. Take this tour if it's your first time in Tahoe. You will see such amazing views of this vast, beautiful blue lake. Two thumbs up!! read more

A nice, decent cruise from Zephyr to Emerald Bay. It's relaxing, and if you happen to listen to some of the facts they play in the lower deck video, you'll learn quite a few interesting facts and factoids about Lake Tahoe, including an interesting story of a boat they sank. If you like calm boat rides, you'll actually really like it. BUT..... they really need to work on a few things. The experience could be so much more. 1) First, customer service (as with most touristy things here) is painfully slow, and in need of serious upgrading. It's a shame a lot of the places don't raise the bar for such a fantastic location, and Dixie II is no exception, unfortunately. Get used to long wait times, and the lack of ownership if you have any issues. 2) I didn't know there was a shuttle. I only found out about it when I was headed to the hotel parking lot and saw a large bus with a sign on it, and was filled halfway. I asked, and got a "duh" response, but guess Lady Luck was on my side for this. Once I got on, getting there and back was no issue. 3) For all the covid preparation they CLAIM to do, nothing is actually enforced, except MAYBE the occasional mask reminder. They put signs on certain seats for social distancing, which were neither enforced by staff, nor obeyed by patrons. Everyone was on top of each other. The only reason nobody came close to me was because I'm a large, intimidating guy, and the people I was with are a scary bunch of MMA fellas, who are mean and ugly. 4) I actually liked the effort of their cruise photographer. They offer to take pictures on the pier, but if you don't like it, they offer another opportunity on the boat when you arrive at Emerald Bay (which we did, and loved). So.... if you can avoid it until covid is completely done, I'd advise waiting. If you can't, then I advise getting there earlier, and staking a claim on your seats with blankets and snot (yes, pick your nose and wipe it on the seat so it grosses everyone else out). I like mellow cruises like this as a nice intermission from all the physical activities in Tahoe, so I enjoyed it. But definitely nothing you'll regret if you miss the opportunity. read more

When I do any type of touristy activity that combines a tour with food, I really try to manage my overall expectations. This is the second time I've done the sunset dinner cruise with the MS Dixie and I highly recommend it for a really fun evening of food, sights, and music! The dinner part comes first and begins with some tasty rolls and butter. Then comes a tomato mozzarella salad with balsamic dressing, also nice. I chose steak this evening and it also has mashed potatoes and broccolini with a peppercorn sauce. Sure, it's not the best steak I've ever had, but this isn't a steak house. It was cooked medium and had nice flavor. Dessert was a simple cheesecake. The service is outstanding and friendly. I forgot to take pictures of the food because we were all talking! I did hear that the drinks were also very good. After dinner we all went to the top deck to take in the breathtaking scenery. The mountains and the water and the sunset were perfectly choreographed to a recorded narration describing some of the sites, namely Vilingsholm, the Scandinavian inspired home built by Lora Josephine Knight, a philanthropist from CA. After sunset It was back downstairs to dance and sing to the the cover band that played us back to shore. We all had a great time and it was the perfect ending to our trip! read more

This is a fun thing to do while visiting Tahoe. We took the affordable $99 afternoon cruise and really enjoyed the slow pace of the ship and the recorded commentary about the scenery we were viewing along the way. The view of Fannette Island, Vikingsholm Castle, the Eagle Waterfall, and the Rubicon was gorgeous. There are actually some nice things to buy in the gift shop also and the lunch you can buy if you want to wasn't bad. I'd recommend and or do this cruise again. read more

We had 15 in our group ages 12 to 86 , everyone was incredibly wonderful, from the captain who helped my mom at 86 with her walker to get off the pier to the boat! Then there was Sam the bartender'! My family (8 adults, 1 toddler) booked a dinner cruise on the Dixie II for Friday, September 6. At the time of making this dinner reservation back in May, we were advised to park in the back of Harrah's Casino, and we would be picked up by the Dixie shuttle bus at the back of Harrah's at precisely 5 pm. We were NEVER TOLD by the Dixie employees that Harrah's charges $35 per car for parking. (Parking at the marina adjacent to the Dixie would have been $10-12 per car on that night.). Thus, we paid $48 to $50 more for parking at Harrah's than we would have if we had parked in the marine lot. Dixie employees should advise customers that if they choose to park at Harrah's Casino and be picked up by the Dixie shuttle bus, that the parking fee will be a minimum of $35 per car (sometimes the parking rates are higher if there is a special event at the hotel). read more

Let's be honest, no better way to see the lake than on this boat! Staff was amazing and I have done this cruie twice! Lets also be honest, this is banquet food at its best and not a 5 star meal. Knowing that, take the 1st seating and the 6:00 cruise for the best sunsets. Only downside is the AC down below can't keep up with the sun so it does get rather warm inside. Maybe an upgrade in the by the bottle reds also. read more

It was good but not worth the price I would say. Seems to be overhyped. I would rather spend my money somewhere else.

I made sure there's a no smoking policy on this cruise and they assured me there is. When we boarded the cruise they made an announcement that no one is allowed to smoke on board and that if we see anyone smoking let their staff know. I was standing next captain's cabin filming views on the top deck. A guy knocked on captains cabin, asked him if he can let him smoke? Captain said yeah, go in the back and smoke. There was not enough seating for the number of people that were let onboard. Most of the seats had sign on them "seating here is temporarily closed". Had to stand for 2-2.5hr ride. read more

Booked this a week ago to secure our things to do in stateline/tahoe visit from Reno. So glad we did! We parked at Harrah's casino and picked up the bus/shuttle that took us to zephyr cove resort. Boarded the paddle boat and walked around to familiarize ourselves. Decided to get a drink at the bar, beer, wine, specialty drinks for $11, and a nice liquor selection. Shortly after we decided to get nachos and chicken tenders. Kind of expensive but it was decent food. Made our way to the gift shop and hubby bought a t shirt. Went up top as we were arriving into emerald bay and it is just gorgeous. The views are spectacular and the weather was great. Took lots of pictures and made our way to the back of the boat upon leaving emerald bay and stumbled on the designated smoking section. We are smokers and decided to have one but the folks sitting a row behind the sign in red were clearly not happy. Idk what to say. If it was no smoking, we wouldn't have smoked, all I can say is don't sit near the smoking section if you're going to sigh, roll your eyes, and cough like it's so bothersome to you. YOU chose to sit there. Plenty of seating on 3 levels inside and out. read more

This is a great way to experience the stunning views of the Lake. We did the 2:30pm viewing cruise on Sunday. The weather was great, the views breathtaking. Cons: too many people on the cruise - we got on early enough that we got a seat on the top deck in the middle, people who got on later didn't have space to sit at the top deck. There may have been seating inside on the lower deck(I didn't check), but everyone would want to be outside on a good day. The captain was also not loud enough to hear any of the announcements he made. Overall a great experience. read more

Save your a time and money - skip it. Dinner and a cruise on beautiful Lake Tahoe sounds great right? Sadly it falls short. Our experience start d with waiting on the dock in the hot sun for a half hour after getting dropped off by the tour bus. No place to sit and no shade. The food was bad and the "band" was two guys who were ok at best. Two stars instead of zero because of the beautiful scenery and helpful friendly staff. But way too expensive for what you get. read more
