Stopped by this general store on a recent visit to Glenorchy to check out what sorts of stuff they carried. I was impressed with their selection - they had everything from hot food to groceries, to clothes, to postcards, and knickknacks. As a big aquarist, I had to get this cast iron bottle opener when I found it there. It's just so cute and it's really solid since it's cast iron. I ended up getting a hat too (not pictured) and it's also really nice. The staff were helpful and quite friendly, the only reason I'm docking a point is the prices are on the more expensive end. read more

We read so many good things about Mrs. Woolly's General Store, so of course we had to check it out and wow, what a gem! This place is part café, part gift shop, part secret garden, and 100% charm. On one side, you've got coffee, pastries, pizza, flatbreads, and sandwiches. On the other, shelves of handmade goodies you didn't know you needed until now. But the real magic happens outside: there's a cozy dining area tucked away on the left, complete with 90s music, free wifi, and a super clean bathroom (yes, that deserves a shout-out) We tried the boysenberry almond pie and hazelnut brownie, which were absolutely delicious, not too sweet, just right. And the pepperoni flatbread? Crispy, flavorful, and totally worth it. Prices are very reasonable, too. It's the kind of place that makes you want to linger a bit longer, sip your coffee, hum along to the music, and just soak in the small-town charm. Definitely a gem worth stopping for! This is THE stop while you're in the area - partially because there's not much else around here, but partially because it's great! This general store offers coffee, grab and go or dine in meals, tons of outdoor seating in beautiful grounds, an epic general store with a variety of items, and amenities like bathrooms and free library. First, the store: You can get all kinds of things here, like: Souvenirs and gifts Books of all kinds: hiking guides, coffee table books about NZ, etc. Lord of the Rings themed memorabilia Practical hiking and camping goods Packaged food like cheese, crackers, etc. for picnics and camping And so much more! The building itself is so well decorated, the items for purchase look like they're meant to be there. But the best spot is definitely the back patio area: tons of outdoor seating, darling decor, and eclectic designs. Sadly, the food left a bit to be desired. My partner got the meat pie which ended up being more like a bake, and left his stomach feeling uneasy. The salad I got was good, not great and not much for GF options. We wished we'd ordered other things, because the pizza and some of the other hand pies looked good. read more

The place to stop in the area for a meat pie or any type of lunch, with nice outdoor seating and good sweet options too. We stopped here after doing some of the Routeburn Track for a late lunch and got a curried chicken wrap and a pulled pork sandwich both of which were good. The raspberry brownie was excellent for dessert, and the chocolate gelato went over well too with the kids. The do not have milkshakes which the group was hoping for, but given the remote location I was impressed with the selection of fresh options generally. The shop also has lots of good giftwares from woolen sweaters and wraps to paper goods to specialty foods. read more

Lots of organic packaged food. Very good whole grain bread made in house. Great prepared food too - 4 types of wraps, 5 types of salads, a coconut yogurt and chia berry cup topped with granola, and more. Some produce, dairy and meat. Homemade cookies were outstanding! And gelato! read more

Took the scenic drive up to Glenorchy from Queenstown, really just for the scenery and not expecting to find much in the town, let alone anything vegan. Quite pleasantly surprised to duck into this place and find heaps of vegan-friendly treats. We tried the dried feijoa snacks (100% pure feijoa -- tart but tasty, a favorite fruit in NZ), a couple of vegan muesli and raw superfood bars, and a couple of different types of "healthier" organic potato chips. They also have some pre-prepared homemade food -- wraps and sweets and things like that. Unfortunately, very little of that stuff was vegan. With their homemade food, they seemed to be more focused on gluten-free than vegan. Would love to see them come out with more vegan options there. They did have a falafel wrap with non-dairy "kimcheese" (kimchi cheese, which is pretty cool.) Half the store is devoted to the various foodstuffs -- the snacks, the pre-prepared homemade food, and the natural grocer stuff. The other half of the store has a mishmash of outdoor gear, books on the local region, cute giftware, handmade toys and stuff for children, quality souvenirs, etc. It's a great little store in the middle of nowhere, and definitely worth a visit on your scenic drive. I'm downranking it because of the lack of homemade vegan food (especially for a place that focuses so heavily on healthy and specialty foods) and because it is admittedly pretty overpriced. But then again, this is still the greater Queenstown region, so they know they're getting tourist dollars, and there's nothing else like this in the immediate area so they can charge whatever they like. The Glenorchy General Store is a treasure trove of Made in NZ artisanal products, from locally fermented sauerkraut to Harpoon cold brew coffee. Their selection of fresh prepared food is impressive with a fridge full of delicious wraps, salads and take home meals. We visited just after lunch so I didn't get to sample any food but I did spy a George and Edi (Wanaka) candle that I was easily coerced into buying. After all, one can never have enough candles... The General Store is definitely worth a looksie if you're in Glenorchy. It's a great spot to pick up lunch or marvel at all the amazing products we produce in own backyard! read more

I love this General Store and visit it every time I am in Glenorchy or passing through! It's a special place. Their customer service is above and beyond as well! I purchased a pair of earrings and lost one. I was gutted. I called the store and Agi took care of me immediately with a personal touch that is rare to find these days. She found the last pair for me and we exchanged photos over email to ensure they were the right ones. I said I could drive to Glenorchy (about 45 minutes from me) and she offered to hand deliver them to me where I work in Queenstown. We ended up not being able to coordinate schedules, so she shipped them to me instead, free of charge. She kept me in the loop throughout the entire process and was so kind and wonderful to talk to! She made the experience a delight! read more
