After about a month of attendance, I feel comfortable advising anyone interested in attending that it's safe to disregard both of those concerns. Regarding safety - I attend classes on the weekends and at night. I've never felt unsafe. The parking lot is fenced, and the building is well secured. It's as safe as a facility loaded with swords can be. Regarding the novice issue - Coach Stone and his staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming. There are students from a broad range of ranges - from kids to senior citizens - from a broad range of cultural backgrounds. Everyone seems tremendously welcoming. The coaching is incredibly patient. I know I'm endlessly making novice mistakes - and certainly repeating the same ones. In spite of this, the coaches let me make my mistakes, and then work to educate me so that I try to make incremental improvements. Beyond that - this is a ton of fun. We are now 3 years into lessons and I recommend the program highly. Its a great way to stay on a consistent schedule in the summer and to get out of the house in the winter. From a practical view: there's lots of class times across the week, a weekly e-newsletter you have regular access to updates, there are regular belt promotions that give students small goals. Shihan also has students work on weekly goals and has them work on positive mantras while they are younger. Like "I will always try my best." Personally, while we started the program when my son turned 4, he's now 7 and still enjoys Karate. He practices katas which are series of moves in a row (like 10-12) they take weeks to practice and offer my son a great way to practice his left/right and focusing on his foot positions or his stances. Due to his early access to these classes he easily takes to new spaces, over the summer he participated in wrestling summer camps. These were completely new for him but because he was already in the practice of working with students, teachers and sensais he took to the camps easily. He didn't hesitate and take a ton of time being shy in the space but instead was confident and even understood physical boundaries with other students. He knew how to practice wrestle with little instruction. He even volunteered to go in front of the group to practice moves.

The instructors did not seem equipped to teach children this young. Instead of using age-appropriate teaching methods, they often appeared impatient and failed to keep young students engaged. My child left classes feeling discouraged rather than motivated. I also felt that my family was treated differently than others, and the overall experience left us feeling unwelcome. Because of how we were treated, I chose to withdraw my child from the program. I would not recommend this school to parents of young children. If you're looking for a martial arts program for a 5-year-old, I suggest finding a school with instructors who have more experience, patience, and a welcoming approach for all families.

There was never an announcement made all of a sudden they just started. So they don't do a very good job of indoctrinating new kids into the program with kids who have already been there. They also don't communicate very well through email and text. There were a couple times where there was no class on a scheduled night because of testing and we weren't aware and we made the 20 minute drive for nothing. Decided to go with something a little closer to us.
