We have come here for decades, but not often in recent years. Both visits for sandwiches in the last year have been very mediocre. While the were made to order and the meat, cheese and vegetables fresh, the amount seemed less generous in the past. The bread was almost stale. I should have stuck with the amazing pimiento cheese. A friend mentioned recently that The Mouse Trap has great, homemade soups that change daily, so I decided to head down there for lunch today to see what they were offering--Potato/Bacon and Italian Rice and Beans. I went with the Potato/Bacon and it is truly delicious! Loaded up with chunks of potato and lots of bacon, it really hit the spot on this chilly day. I added a bit of salt and plenty of cracked pepper, which I recommend as potato soup usually needs a bit of both. To accompany it, I got a roast beef and swiss sandwich with horseradish sauce. The price of the sandwich ($8.99) had me a little concerned about the value, but it was absolutely loaded with beef and cheese, easily two meals for me, if I add chips, which I did! If you haven't been there, it's basically a deli-style operation. You place your order with one clerk, who gives the orders to a couple of people who assemble the orders. There were several indecisive customers ahead of me, so it took a while for me place my order. Then, since there were orders ahead of mine being prepared, I had to wait about ten minutes for my order to be prepared. No big deal, they have a ton of great merchandise to wander around and check out. Point being, make sure you have time to wait around a bit if you go during lunchtime. Highly recommended! read more

I have come here pretty regularly for years. It is a combination of a cheese shop, gift shop, deli and gourmet kitchen supply shop. They have high end and imported items and foods. All very high quality. As far as the prepared food goes. Chris is a capable and excellent chef. They offer deli sandwiches and prepared foods like grilled salmon, grilled shrimp, beef tenderloin, crab cakes, personal-sized meat loaves, asparagus, potatoes, quiches, salads, etc. They offer 3 different homemade soups each day and they are always excellent. I had the split pea and ham soup today and I always check to see when they will be making it again. They also do amazing party trays. I love their sauces and Zapp's potato chips. It stays pretty busy all day long but noonish is usually when you may not find a seat. Take out is great too. They even offer prepared dinners that you can pick up on your way home from work. They are known for their Pimento Cheese and they sell a lot of it. It has been imitated but never duplicated. Many of the recipes are from the owner's mother and they were passed down for generations. Nice place. In summary it is a unique experience for lunch and the retail shop is fantastic. Most everything is unique and hard to find. To be fair, I need to mention the downside. The only drawback is the price. Have to write that this place was very accommodating to how I wanted to order and have it picked up. So I put in an order for two croissant sandwiches with chicken salad and a side of chips over the phone. I then requested if I could curb side it and have her bring the food to my car. I did just that and I was able to get my order, give my credit card to pay and was back on my way to work within 20 minutes. It's been a while since I've been to The Mouse Trap and my experience today reminded me why. The woman behind the counter was extremely rude. She seemed put-off by my questions. She was so rude that at first I thought she was just joking, but no, she was just genuinely that rude. As I left I remembered back to my previous experiences there and recalled that they too had been poor ones due to the attitude of the staff. There are other places in town to purchase good cheese. The Mousetrap is a great local place to grab lunch-it is about as close to a restaurant that a non-restaurant can get. I say that in that the majority of the store is specialty foods/sweets/sauces/gobs of kitchen ware-but the real passion seems to be behind their deli case. They have the normal deli fare-sandwiches on assorted breads, cheeses, LT and the house sauce; but what is a bit different is the different salads, pastas, and other lunchy items that are available. Personally, I highly recommend their brussels sprouts when they are in season-they relaunched my brussels renaissance-and their salmon pinwheels-smoked salmon (of highest quality), cream cheese, onions, capers. Oh and by the way, they have the best iced tea (unsweet) in town. It can be a little bit pricey-but really, considering the other things in the area-especially the deplorable Drake's-you can't really go wrong for the quality-expect to spend around $10, however. All of the people working are very helpful and generous, especially considering that it can get quite hectic in there depending on what time of day you go. I had no idea this place was even there but omg am I glad I found it lol!!! The manager happen to come into my dry cleaner to drop off some stuff and she told me what it was and the type of foods they have so I told her I would definitely come up there for lunch that day. Well not 10 minutes later she came back in my store with a cup of lobster bisque and some pimento cheese that was absolutely life-changing lol!!! I love the Mouse Trap for finding good little kitchen/food related gifts. They have a great selection of kitchen wares, specialty cookware, table setting stuff, etc. They have lots of coffees, chocolates, dried pastas, oils, peppercorns and specialty food items you might not find at the grocery. My brother and I have a tradition of going there on Christmas Eve (open!) and buying last minute things for our family. I've always enjoyed browsing around for gifts there. Being called the Mouse Trap, though, I have to say their cheese selection is pretty limited. If you're looking for a great place to pick up a good variety of cheeses for a party or dinner, I would say you're better off going to Wine + Market, they have a much larger selection and wines to boot. But if you just needed a wedge of parm, or something fairly standard, this would meet that need for sure. If I lived closer, I would probably be a bigger fan...Never had a sammy there, so my star rating doesn't account for that... read more
