I am really picky when it comes to my yoga. I am of the school of thought that yoga is not just about complex poses and strength, but about my mind and spirit as well. What I love about Mountain Yoga is that there is something for everyone and they leave the pretentiousness at the door. It's welcoming, friendly, with a wide variety of teachers. I came here specifically to write a review for my favorite teacher at the studio, Jessica because I find that she provides something that no one else in town does...depth, fun, creativity, and the acceptance of being exactly where I'm at on any given day. It's not physically too challenging for me (I have some injuries and physical limitations), which I appreciate so much and there's a realness to it that I find missing in a lot of other classes. I can tell she thinks about and cares about her classes a lot. I didn't start out as a yogi, and I'm still a bit of a resistant one. I'm not flexible. I find most yoga poses annoying and challenging. But I always get something deep from Jessica's classes and my body feels so much better after going. read more

I am an avid practicer of yoga and go weekly in NY where I live. I was traveling cross country with a friend and we both agreed that yoga felt like a good way to start our night in Bozeman. I typically do Vinyasa yoga, and the class I attended as a Chakra Flow ~ All Levels run by Jessica. I left speechless and it took me an hour to process the issues with the class. First, the flow did not match any pace. It moved very fast at moments and then slowed down unexpectedly. A flow is supposed to be paced with one's breath. Her own breath was not following what she was speaking, and it was awkward to follow. There were moments where Jessica directed the class to flow however they wished. If I was a new student, this would be alarming. She used terminology at some points to discuss the chakras and energies, but these did not support or align to the physical movements. Typically in an all levels class the instructor offers modifications and works with people to push their individual practice. This was not the case. My biggest issue came at a moment where I looked around the room and noticed during a warrior II that nobody's feet were at correct angles. This is dangerous for knees, backs, and can lead to injury. In that moment, we were directed to do something I have done in a kick boxing class. The improper foot placements worsened, people were unbalanced, and never in any other Yoga class have I been directed to do side kicks. I was truly concerned that people were going to get hurt. Additionally, Jessica could not stably do several of the poses she directed the class to do. In the end, I stopped following her. I began to do my own poses in a way that felt safe and supported. I usually use YELP to add positive reviews for business I hope to support. I am writing this to protect other potential drop ins, and perhaps provide after the moment feedback to a burgeoning teacher. read more

I've been a teacher and student of yoga for 15 years, in San Francisco, Los Angelos and New York, and was pleasantly surprised, after trying all of the studios in Bozeman, to find such a wonderful community at Mountain Yoga. After attending classes here, I decided to pick up a class to teach over the summer, and was even more pleasantly surprised to see how most of the students and instructors know each other's names. It's the kind of space where students come early to hang out and linger long after class has ended. There's a range of offerings at this studio, so I recommend trying different classes to find what you like. read more

I have been to tons of the classes at this studio taught by Jessica and I've always left feeling amazing and re-energized. I've been doing yoga on and off for 10+ years and have practiced at least 30 different studios all over the country, maybe more. Just to comment on the 1 star reviews below: if you are in serious pain, don't listen to your body, not sure what a"flow" class is, and spends a yoga class constantly looking around the room to judge other yogis in their "foot positions", maybe class guided yoga isn't the right practice for you? This studio has gorgeous energy & a beautiful community of people who come and gather for the purpose of growing their own practice. I've practiced yoga with Jessica as a level 1 and as a level 4 every time I come to Bozeman and I've always felt incredible and guided. I've also had lots of friends who take the mama class and they feel so supported and renewed afterwards. read more

This yoga studio is amazing. The space is inviting and all the teachers are highly trained. Some of the teachers are also athletes, therapists or meditators in addition to yogis, so the classes are rich, inspiring, SAFE and informative. Kristin Jordan is a particularly amazing teacher and I love the Community Meditation they offer on Sunday afternoons from 3-4:40pm. Keeping in mind that my intention here is to tell the truth and warn others who are here searching for other people's opinions about their experiences at Mountain Yoga, and also remembering that this is about a person who has feelings, too. I am from out of town and my friend and I went this past Monday to get in a yoga class while we were away on vacation. I was hesitant because I have cervical and thoracic disc issues, as well as nerve damage that affects my shoulder and arm. I love yoga, as it's been so helpful in dealing with the pain, but I have limits to which classes are suitable for me. I went in with an open mind and asked the instructor of the chakra yoga class, Jessica, I believe, if the "flow" of the class would be suitable for me since I stick to "slow" and "gentle flow" yoga due to my injuries. She enthusiastically said her flow class is not that quick, that she offers many modifications for those who need them, and that her class would be suitable for me. With trust in her and an open mind, I gave it a try. I was doing alright for the first quarter of the class, but the pace was fast and I observed the instructor fall over when showing the class a pose. (Red flag) We were also doing lunging karate kicks at some point. (Another red flag--bad for the lower back and I don't come to yoga to have the instructor tell me to imagine kicking my friends.) I'm not even sure what to say about this. After I realized I had pushed my body too far, and pain was setting in, I stopped participating and did my own stretches to alleviate the pain. The only modifications that were ever called out to me throughout the entire class were "child's pose" and she did come over to tell me to do "legs up the wall" when others were doing headstands. Head stands!! I was very annoyed that I paid money to take the class and the instructor never bothered to walk over to me and assess what I was feeling or how to help the pain in any way. I left feeling betrayed, as if I was just another body to pay them the "drop in" fee. Also, maybe she thought we would both leave if she said it wasn't suitable for me, so they would lose 2 drop in fees. I can only guess at what her motivations were for saying I would be fine. I was not fine. I was in bed the rest of the evening instead of out exploring the town. I hope in the future she will speak more honestly to students who express concern about the safety of their bodies in her class, about the actual pace of the class, and also check in once in a while. Especially if they're dealing with injuries and they're looking for yoga to help the healing process. I can easily watch yoga on the internet. I come to a yoga class for the instructors help with the poses and for their expertise on proper body mechanics. I would probably not have left this review if I felt that she had cared at all. Sometimes a person showing concern can help ease my feelings of regret when pushing my own body too far. My mistake, though, for not respecting my own limitations. She did say some beautiful things about the chakras but she could improve by helping to connect the mind and body. It's hard to "let go" and "release" tension when you're in pain, feeling lost and abandoned in a new class. I'm still processing what the universal message was for me to learn from that class. read more

Kristins' Friday night happy hour flow class is one of the most powerful and inspiring classes I've ever been to! Her ability to hold space in the room and authentically speak her truth in a way that is healing and uplifting will leave you feeling so moved and softer within your being. Lots of excellent teachers, including the the best teacher I have had in any subject whatever,a good variety of classes and a supportive community with a family feel add up to a great studio.
