Watson Lake is great for boating, hiking, fishing and day picnicking. Rock climbers like to climb on the large rugged granite rock formations known as Granite Dells. These rock formations make this lake very picturesque. I used to see pictures of Watson Lake all over social media before coming here. Watson Lake is located a few miles from Downtown Prescott. It is a reservoir that was formed in the early 1900s when a dam was built on Granite Creek. There are two boat launches for canoeing and kayaking. The Prescott Peavine Trail is the area's most popular trail if you want to hike around the lake. You cannot swim in Watson Lake because water quality and algae concerns. Before coming here, just know that there is a small daily fee to park your vehicle at Watson Lake. We enjoyed kayaking here. There were a lot of areas to explore at this lake. The rock formations are fun to kayak around and make for pretty photographs. If you are into bird watching, this is a great place to go because the Watson Woods Riparian Preserve is nearby.

This wide and flat trail offers beautiful scenery of Watson Woods riparian area, Watson Lake and…read morethe Dells. It makes for an easy hike, bike ride, or on rare occasions even a cross country ski, which we just completed after a late February storm. If you chose to ski it, get out early in the day - like 8 am as the trail is fully exposed and even if the temp is below freezing the sun will melt your tracks. Ski wax is also highly recommended. The parking lot is near the refuse transfer station and requires a $3 fee paid by credit card at the kiosk, or is free on Wednesdays. The first tenth of a mile northbound skirts by the refuse station so can be noisy and dusty in the summer, but after that the riparian area, lake and boulders provide great opportunities for photography or just relaxing on one of the many benches. You can also head south along the river bed area of the preserve or cross the preserve to the west and north to Watson Lake. There are several trail map signs posted throughout to help guide you on your trek. This is a popular trail so can get busy, but you can still loose yourself along the river area or further north if you take off on side trails.

We are addicted to going there. But last night was the best - oh joy!!! A fairy tale setting for the play Merry Wives of Winslow - Shakespeare with a western twist!! The acting was excellent - wonderful dialogue and sarcasm - and the environment was absolutely superb. Highland Center coordinator and crew set up seats/tables around the discovery garden and it was enchanting as we enjoyed the pre-play time in that lovely atmosphere. We chose to also purchase the "meal" and it was yummy and delightfully packaged - from Los Gatos. We look forward to continuing to enjoy, explore and support Highland nature center - many activities for young'uns and young'uns at heart. We had the pleasure of purchasing a painting which then allowed us to meet the artist and attend an event at her house - it has introduced us to some lovely new friends and all due to the Highland Center. Met a wonderful couple last night. The Highland center is awesome - Go there and find your path to outdoor enjoyment and learning. They have some great lectures too. WOW!!!

Start on Vista Trail and Connect to the Panorama and Petroglyph trails that head up to a high point. Here you will find a nice collection of petroglyph rocks that have been found in the area and arranged for everyone to enjoy. There are also interpretive signs at the top that identify the surrounding mountains.
