Nice, bright and airy building with loads of space to climb or even just watch others climb. Couldn't find a traverse wall anywhere but the place is so big I may just not have seen it. A small gear shop if your need some new shoes or trousers and a membership desk come coffee shop as you enter with a large viewing platform built on top. Hopefully they will have a monthly standing order membership though as not sure how NY have the money spare to pay for a yearly membership even though that is the most economical way to climb if you're keen.

Pfft...what nonsense!!…read moreHow wrong I was, introduced to it by a friend who insisted I give it a try, bullied further into it by my ex, i did dive right into the activity pool that is climbing. To my utter surprise I found the whole experience absolutely unashamedly awesome. Lord almighty how on earth can the simple exercise of climbing a wall be so much fun, I cannot put into words. Not only does this keep you fit it also increases core body strength for all you athletes out there. As you progress up the walls it really is an incredibly relaxing, fun yet intense experience. The different colours on the walls correspond to different levels of climbers, and reflect the difficulty with which you can climb. I didn't quite manage to get the hang of all that rope knot malarky, but was much more interested in climbing rather than holstering my partner and watching them climb. It would be a massive help if you knew someone who does climb and is good at it to go with initially and learn the "ropes". It was a massive help for me, mainly because I did most of the climbing and my dear friend that accompanied me had the patience of Mother Teresa. No seriously this is an alternative to your boring normal routine, give it a try, it really is a stress buster I tell thee!!

They have all the relevant safety equipment available to hire, including climbing shoes and harnesses. For those that don't want to fork out on hiring equipment but still want to climb, they have a bouldering room that you can scale the edges of which is great fun. They also have a few walls with huge crash mats underneath which you can shimmy up and down without a harness. For seasoned climbers they have some incredibly high walls and some that angle out so your moving across the ceiling. These look to scary and high for an amateur climber like myself. They sell a range of energy boosting snacks at very reasonable prices, and they offer Awesome Wall's members discounted climbing trips across the UK. You can walk or jog to this place in 15 minutes from the city centre, or it will take 4-5 minutes in a cab.

I'll get this out first I don't like climbing…read more Awesome has big bouldering room with lots to go on. In fact if your on your own you can pay just to go bouldering. They have everything thing for easy to 'you might have to be able to fly to this one' hard. Thy also have a number boulder problems for kids. In the main room there is lots to go and the routes get reset about one a month. There is a leading ladder well so you might see some climbing gods playing on them. There are 3 self belys, very tall walls and a lot of lead walls to have a go at. There is room for people to sit down a watch, the cafe is quite limited but you get hot drinks. The rooms get very cold in winter and the tolets are clean.

Good induction showing around the place, how to climb properly and warm up etc. I signed up via Groupon which was £15 for induction, 1 year membership and 3 free sessions (inc. shoe hire). The induction alone costs £15. All details about costs are on their web site. Dont think it mentioned shoe hire on the site - its £2.50. (Hands sore now and a bit "raw" now!! - and starting to feel forearms tighten!)

My very first time at the MCC and first time climbing generally and I have to say that I really hope I'll be going back soon! We went for a taster session between 5 of us which lasted an hour and cost £60 between us - not bad value I think! Liam the instructor was a really cool guy (in fact all the staff were pretty chilled and friendly) and was all about the safety first, followed by teaching us on the kiddy walls - then onto the "am I really going to have to climb up that mofo" walls! After we all had a chance to get up and down the big walls a few times we then went on to some bouldering which was really cool but I could definitely feel it in my shoulders the next day - intense but good fun and you really work up a sweat! Special mention should go to what a cool place is - just check out the snaps! An old church/cathedral converted into what is an amazing space and setting - just wow!

Well, I have put that behind me. I decided to throw the idea out to the people of yelp and managed to gather together a small group of rotund gentlemen (like myself), and one pretty lady, to have a go at our local climbing wall. It was in a converted church, which was pretty cool. The MCC offer a 1 or 2 hour taster session, with the idea being that the more people you get to come the cheaper it will be. We went for the 1 hour and have to say that that was more than enough. We were introduced to our instructor Liam, who managed to show us how to put on all the equipment so as it would cause the most amount of damage to our genitals during the hour. He then took us to a child wall for our initial go at climbing. The air was filled with hushed curse words as a room full of food bloggers were rapidly been overtaken by small children on the climbing wall. Then, to the large wall! Wait?! Already?! YES!!!! And so, two at a time we were sent up the large wall. And it wasn't easy. my forearms are still aching now as I type! But it was fun. Everyone was aching together. Everyone was helping each other and egging people on. After this, we had a go at bouldering. This basically like the wall, but without ropes and only up a wall that is about 10'. Liam put stickers at some of the highest places and we all had to try and get one. Well, the things we will do for a sticker. It was carnage. People were falling off walls onto the crash mats like we were in action movies. Then, an hour was done. fantastic. I want to go back again :-)
