I was here to visit the memorial for the S.S. Sultana. On April 27, 1865, the commercial side-wheel steamboat Sultana exploded and capsized on the Mississippi River, killing 1,169 people in what is still regarded as the worst maritime accident in American history. The Civil War's end and the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln's assassin John Wilkes Booth the day before overshadowed the disaster in the media. No one was ever held responsible for the tragedy.
The monument is straight ahead in the center of the cemetery, a large white block. You can drive up to it and pay your respects.
