After this experience this will be my last time staying at the Madelia Hotel. So I was coming up this past week to get together with friends and had an extremely bad experience at the Madelia Hotel. From the front door being locked when I arrived to check-in, to no lock in the side security door at all, to the filthy tub in the bathroom and the icing on the cake...discovered bugs in the bed on my last night. I stayed two nights and the last night I was there I slept in a chair. . Also note that they attempted to charge $30/night more for their ADA accessible room during the booking process. I filed a complaint with the health department on the issues noted here. If you experience issues call the Madelia Fire Chief. Do not stay here.

The room was super clean, it had a relaxing scent in the room (possibly from the cleaning products they use), and just comfortable! I used to be a housekeeper of a hotel in South Dakota so I greatly appreciate the level these ladies put in because even down to the little details, nothing was missed! Even down to the toilet paper! Every person I interacted with was super nice and helpful! Out of all the hotels I have stayed in during any of my visits in MN, this would have to be my favorite. I've been looking to book again, and am happy to say that the prices have not gone up. Each room is $139- $149 a night, and is worth e v e r y p e n n y. This is not your typical Bed and Breakfast, nor is it a typical hotel. The gracious owners own an upscale BBQ restaurant downstairs, and run the Inn upstairs. Breakfast is served off their menu down in the restaurant - and was absolutely fantastic. I had a delicious chocolate chip scone and coffee, with spicy breakfast potatoes, eggs, and toast. They were extremely accommodating, and said I could order whatever I pleased. I sat on their back patio all by myself and it was - heaven. The rooms - OH THE ROOMS. You'd be hard pressed to find a hotel this nice anywhere nearby. They were clean, updated, and they spared no expense. There was a separate powder room, a huge luxurious whirlpool tub, and over-sized shower. The bed was large and comfy, and I fell asleep at night to the in-room electric fireplace. There was not one, but TWO flat screen tv's, and a beautiful marble sink/vanity area. The room also included a mini-fridge and a Keurig stocked with Caribou Coffee. The rooms were spic-and-span, and HUGE. There is even access to the shared back-porch. The inn-keepers were friendly and offered to give me suggestions of what to do in the area. Head down a few blocks to the main street and you will find plenty to do. There is also a wonderful winery about 8 minutes away called Chankaska Creek. If the guest book in the room is any indication, I am not the only one who has enjoyed my stay at the Konsbruck. It felt like a luxury to even be standing in that bathroom. Take away the stench wafting in the air, and you would find a perfectly serviceable mid- to low-range hotel with pleasantly clean rooms and reasonably courteous staff. I'm not kidding about the stench. The very nice lady at the front desk asked me if I preferred a particular floor. I made the mistake of asking for the top floor, the 3rd floor, which carried the putrid stink of a decades-old ashtray. It actually defies any reasonable explanation how a place could stink so bad. I bought a glades plug-in and set it on the maximum setting. This made my subsequent nights much more tolerable than the first night, which was filled with nightmares of tobacco-soaked torture chambers. I actually woke up several times that first night trying to figure out what kind of hell I was cast in to endure as punishment for a life of sin and decadence. It was maddening. I came home and wanted to wear some of the clothes that I had not worn during my trip to Minnesota. No dice. Everything still stunk of cigarettes. That's the real barometer for how bad the stink was. There is some supernatural force that is cursing your olfactory senses at this place. I wanted to snort the liquid in the glades plugin to escape this beastly stench. It's inconceivable at how intensely this place must have hosted clouds of tobacco smoke to smell like this. I could swear there's still smoking going on in the 3rd floor rooms, but perhaps that horrible stench is just embedded in the walls and carpeting of the hotel.

They also have free coffee and cookies (delicious brownie cookies) available. In the morning, a free breakfast is provided. Food - The breakfast buffet had a lot of options to pick from and was one of the better breakfast buffets we have had in quite some time. They offered the standards such as waffles, cereal, eggs, fruit, toasting items, etc. but also offered breakfast sandwiches and biscuits and gravy. You did not leave hungry! Vibe - Easy going and super friendly staff. The hotel lobby was very welcoming and smelled like cinnamon and apples. The vintage farmhouse décor matched the town's vibe and made for a very pleasant stay. Reality vs. Online - Pictures that I saw on their website and online matched the quality and condition of the hotel and rooms in-person. No surprises.
