Harborne Pool & Fitness Centre - Healthy glow from Harborne Pool on a frosty December morning

We had booked the NCP9 lifeguarding course for my daughter in February 2023, which was due to start during May 29th half term. She turned up for the course only to be told that the course had been cancelled. No apologies from the course management for the cancellation nor as to why we weren't informed of it at first. If we had known this earlier, we would have organised an alternative. Now, her plans and half term have been ruined thanks to a parade of incompetent dimwits. As for the refund, the staff have to speak to their head office about reimbursing the money (which they were more than happy to take). Hadn't they thought of speaking to us about the cancellation first?!?

Back then, Harborne pool was a fairly run down (but nevertheless charming) Victorian pool - with a high glass ceiling and changing rooms that lined the pool. I really used to enjoy swimming there - it was very peaceful. This recently opened new centre on the site of the old pool is also very good. It is BRAND NEW, and you can tell. The facilities are excellent and the pool is first class. They have also added a gym on the 2nd floor which makes the whole building look very impressive when you drive past. I've not used the gym, but judging by how busy the exercise bikes and running machines are in the wide window that overlooks the road, the gym is very popular also.

Waterworld is located in Festival Park, a collection of leisure facilities just off the A500 ring road around Stoke-on-Trent. Fortunately, the dreadful roadworks on the A500 are gradually getting better. I aim to visit out of school holidays and so parking and overcroading hasn't been a problem but I can imagine the waterpark becoming very busy at peak periods. There is a big changing room - you'll need a 50p piece for the lockers (non refundable). There's an air of excitement as you smell the chlorine and hear the screams as you walk up the ramp to the waterpark area. There is a medium sized wavepool and a klaxon signals the start of the waves every 20 minutes. There is also another pool for swimming, splashing and which houses the assault course where you can try to get across the floasting islands. However, the multi-coloured flumes that snake round the park above your head are the main draw for me. There are a couple of twisty flumes where you can pick up quite a lot of speed if you lie down absolutely flat. There is a straight 4 lane slide where you can race your friends and family. I also enjoy the Space Bowl where a short slide ejects you into what looks like a giant toilet bowl, which you gradually circle and eventually plop out (or are flushed out) of the hole at the bottom into a pool! Nucleus was the first water-roller-coaster ride in the UK, where you ride a circuit on a raft and water jets propel you uphill as well as sliding downhill. Another great fun experience are the rapids where powereful water jets propel you round and round a loop - it's really hard to escape once you're in the vortex and there's a sense of camaradrie as swimmers help each other escape at the crucial point near the entrance to the ride. A great lesson on the power of water. There's a cafe serving some light meals and snacks. Near to Waterworld, you'll find other entertainment options including a Wedgewood outlet, cinema, bowling alley and some eating options.

**AN UNSAFE AND UNHYGIENIC PLACE TO PRACTICE FITNESS AND WELL BEING**…read more Men's Toilets (upstairs and downstairs) I have recently joined this gym and I am extremely concerned about the hygiene of Fox Hollies Leisure Centre. The male toilets, specifically the ones upstairs next to the gym, have not been cleaned since I started my membership 3 months ago. The toilet bowls have heavy faeces stains stuck to the actual bowl which have not been cleaned nor sanitised in months. The urinals are in worse condition as they have no urinal balls/cakes in them which means they actually smell of stale urine. The urinals have yellow stains indicating that they have not been cleaned or sanitised regularly for a significant period of time. Ironically there is a notice above the sinks which states that the Leisure Centre cleans and disinfects the toilets regularly and that customers should contact them if this is not the case. Next, the sinks have not been cleaned in months and are stained dark brown with grime. The mirrors are dusty and stained with greasy marks. The air freshener in the toilets does not work so the whole room truly reeks of stale urine. As a parent I am extremely troubled that a leisure centre, a place of health, fitness and wellness is so unsanitary. I will be uploading images soon and will also be contacting Birmingham City council and various watchdog associations and of course the local government about these acute health and hygiene issues at a public leisure facility. Staff and Front Reception There is a wide variety of staff from all backgrounds and ages which is really nice to see as Birmingham is a multicultural city. Unfortunately the staff who are at the front reception desk are mostly rude, dismissive and unhelpful. This is certainly true of the more mature members of leisure centre staff. As a customer who brings their entire family to this leisure centre to improve their health and well being, I am exceptionally disappointed that the majority of the staff on the front desk look so unhappy, talk with such disdain, don't say please when asking you to scan and generally really give off a negative air. Personally I really do not like to ask the Fox Hollies Leisure Centre staff questions even though it is part of their job to answer them. Instead I ask other gym goers who are much more positive and significantly more helpful. Parking There are usually plenty of parking spaces, however one major point of concern is that the car park is continually used by driving schools and driving instructors to teach their students parking skills. This has led to my car and that of other leisure centre customers being scratched and severely dented when we return to our vehicles after a fitness class or session at the gym. Also walking around the car park is hazardous as I have nearly been backed into, and run over by learner student drivers doing their maneuvers. The car park belongs to the Fox Hollies Leisure Centre and is only to be used by people who are using the leisure centres' facilities. There should be a policy in place, including a car park security guard which enforces this. Security I have been witness to a few occasions in the gym where there have been physical instances of assault between specific gym goers. This has made me and many other gym users feel unsafe and indeed frightened to use the gym. I feel that there should be adequate security to protect members of the public at all times, who use the gym and that those who cause arguments, who are abusive or cause physical harm should be banned and the police called to remove them and bring forward charges. All of these above issues are far from being minor in nature and should be addressed as they certainly would not be accepted at any private gym or private health facility in the UK.

There is also a great selection of activities here for children, such as water slides to keep families entertained. However, if you're the sort of person that simply want to go for a casual or leisurely swim to keep fit, then I don't think this is the place for you. The pools are usually always overcrowded, and you'll struggle to find a time to go when they're quiet; Especially if you work from 9-5, because after this time, the pools become full of people, meaning that you can't really swim any lengths without bumping into somebody on your way. The changing rooms are pretty standard, as are the showers and locker rooms; you're likely to struggle to find an empty one.

It is VERY children-friendly-my son goes there for his swimming lessons on his own- and my whole family go on Sundays to swim in the pool. We also do squash. Once you are a member, you can book out squash courts, tennis courts, get points when you buy food, get deals on lessons, and children even get their own card to buy food with (only if you want them to), get themselves into the place by scanning their card (my daughter feels like a secret agent scanning her card into the machine). Overall, priory is one of the best leisure clubs around Birmingham. I would definitely recommend this place.

It's a huge gym with great facilities and ample equipment to accommodate all users during peak times. It is well maintained and clean. Like I said, I don't exercise much. However I went with my sister who is a fitness freak and made the silly mistake of trying to keep up with her...I felt as though I was blacking out so went to the changing rooms where I eventually fainted. I woke up with two staff members next to me who offered me a drink, a comfortable room to rest and called for my sister. The racquetball/squash courts (of which there are five!) are of varying sizes, designed for pairs or singles. The tennis court area (indoors) is extremely large, with 6 courts and two small practice areas. The pool is really pretty, very nice, with gorgeous deckchairs all around, a lifeguard on staff, and pretty blue and white tiles. There is also an outdoor pool for the warm weather (or stiff of loin and strong of heart), with a small kiddie pool and a larger pool. Both pools have a section for mucking about, and a roped off area for swimming laps. There is a lifeguard outside too. Then there are the jacuzzis (two of them), three steam rooms and a similar number of saunas. There are masseurs on staff all the time, and a sports therapist you can see for deeper injuries/problems. The restaurant serves a full compliment of food, from traditional English pub grub to posh sandwiches, breakfast, and plenty of healthy options. Unfortunately, the food is crap. This stuff is bad, frozen, pre-cooked stuff that comes out cold. Twice eating here, and the last time was definitely my last. It takes about 30 minutes once the food is ordered for it to come out, which is horrendous for a place with five visible staff members in the restaurant, and only 10 covers. It must have been sitting on the side for about ten minutes, getting cold and soggy. So totally disappointing. But I guess if you're in need, it'll have to do! The staff at this DL are really really nice, helpful, polished and professional. This is a tremendous gym, with lots of sexy, fit people, and you should go there to get the same, if you aren't already.
