Morwellham Quay supported lives for hundreds of years; since the medieval period. Places change to adapt to economic climate; or they die.
Morwellham, not twenty years ago, was a busy thriving place. I, like my sisters, brothers, mother, aunt - and generations of my family, worked in that Valley: Still providing an income for local people. Yes, Its changed - but in the ecconomic climate we live it, its hanging on. How many other communities as small as Morwellham can boast providing income for hundreds of years?
Visitors come here, moan at the cost - but have you any idea how much it costs to maintain all those buildings? If you don't pay, it dies.
It is privately owned, because the council turned their back on it; demanding money the trust couldn't pay.
Blame the council, blame the government, if you will - for putting heritage sites at the bottom of its 'to-do' list. But, there is only so much money to go around.
Be thankful Morwellham is still open.
It was crucially important to the lives of the Tamar people who lived there - like my family.
People come to Morwellham Quay expecting a fun filled day of laid on entertainment - like a theme park. It is a Museum.
There is a huge amount to see - more in the ruins and graves of even older buildings. It is a shame the new owners can't afford to staff it as it was - the knowledge of the place has been lost. The stories handed down are no more. Like the children heard calling one night; from a tunnel no one knew existed - the police and locals searched everywhere for those voices calling for help. They were not found. Ten years later they excavated, and found a tunnel... Or poor William, lost down the mine, The Lady in the Ship Inn...
Don't view Morwellham as a place to visit. See it as peoples homes, peoples lives. Tragedy and happiness happened there. Real people, real lives - yet visitors walk around and say "not much to do..."
Morwellham is in the heart. Not in your pocket.
I wrote the song below, The Bal Maiden, and put it to another tune. I would sing this at Morwellham Quay. It is the other side of Williams Death. Enjoy X
