During my time here in CT I've noticed that when it comes to your average "all-ages" events/venues…read moreyou get one of two experiences. You basically have to pick between hanging out with the dim-witted, mainstream types at loud, gaudily lighted "nightclubs" that are basically just high school dances with more skin and bouncers instead of chaperones or tiny, cramped, pseudo-hipstery music venues like The Space where you pay to stand around and be judged by even bigger douchebags in "Defend Pop Punk" hoodies. Where those places fail, the Amity Teen Center succeeds. They don't try to reel you in with goofy decorations that look like they came from a T.G.I Fridays managed by Tim Burton nor do they cater to the baser instincts of the young and stupid. They know their demographic and they use that knowledge to create an atmosphere that is both fun and safe. The bands that play there always bring something new and unique to the table and for those just looking for a place to get away from it all to hang with their friends and play some video games the arcade area is kept clean and orderly. The staff are more than happy to help no matter what and go out of their way to be as friendly and accommodating as possible. For them it isn't just a job, it's a second home, and that really shows in how well the place is run on a day to day basis. If you haven't checked it out yet and even if you're in the 18+ crowd I would highly recommend checking it out, especially on weekends when the stage is open to bands both local and touring from sometimes even as far away as other countries. It's definitely a place worth experiencing.

I've seen two plays here and one was in each of the stages. The latter one was The Most Beautiful…read moreRoom in New York in the larger stage since it was a musical. The former was Small Mouth Sounds and was a mostly silent play. Both were very funny, provocative, and relatable. The theaters are both on the smaller scale but they have enough accommodations for the types of plays they host. As you walk in, a bar is present that offers the full range of drinks, alcohol included, and snacks. Because the box office is smaller, there is not as much milling about by the other guests as people try to take their seats. However, there is a queue as people try to find their seats. You would think that for such a small theater it wouldn't be that difficult or take so long but I guess not. For myself, I bought each of my tickets so long ago, so I did not remember where my seats are. Anyways, as I said the plays were phenomenal! I think CT theater (Hartford included) does not get enough credit for the types of plays and actors we are able to pull. If you are on the fence about visiting, just go already.

That was THEN before the shuffling around to various locations. With the current direction of selling the public on "mobile" theatre is a no-go form me. Haven't been there since before covid. I'm retired and look forward to visiting a stable location, I have no interest for "new" unfamiliar locations being as though I live a hour away traveling interstate 91. Bad move in my opinion so I haven't been back. I'm usually at Hartford Stage or Theatre works, stable, great shows without the searching all over town. Long Wharf, get your stuff together and I'll return when you do.
