It was an amazing experience!…read more We sailed on the Ingrid Princess with Captain Tracy Hollister from Sequim Bay (John Wayne Marina) to Lopez Island (Fisherman Bay Marina) in the San Juan Islands. Captain Tracy is an extremely knowledgeable and experienced sailor. He is also very familiar with maritime history and the local wildlife. As he entertained us with stories of his sailing adventures in the South Pacific, and his solo, 49-day trip from Japan to Oregon, my fear of being out in the open water dissipated and I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. My husband--an experienced sailor--loved every minute of it, particularly because Captain Tracy let him take the helm. Captain Tracy worked with us to plan our trip. When he learned we wanted to bring our bikes, he suggested Lopez Island because it is bike friendly and fairly flat. He secured our bikes to the side rail and then carefully covered them with bike bags to protect them from the salt water. When we arrived at Fisherman Bay, we attached our panniers and biked .75 miles to Edenwild Boutique Inn. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the island on our bikes! Being on Lopez Island feels like taking a step back in time--everyone smiles and waves. It's a magical place. Our trip was satisfying on so many levels and we definitely intend to sail with Captain Tracy again. We highly recommend this crossing for anyone who enjoys being outdoors.

Received a call the next day saying…read morethe 130pm tour was already full for the next few days (not sure why it let me book online then). But luckily I was able to be flexible and switch to the morning tour (they gave me a day's notice). The staff on the phone said it would be much less windy anyway...which definitely turned out to be true and I was so glad for it bc it would've been chilly otherwise! They're doing great on the Covid safety measures as much as possible. Instead of parking at the office and riding a bus to the bay, they just have you either follow the guide in his vehicle with the kayaks or give you an address/coordinates for your gps. It was easy to keep up with our guide. Everyone wore masks until we got into our own individual kayaks. Very easy to practice social distancing in this setting! The office was very easy to find, right off the highway and even has a winery right next door (and was highly recommended by the host at my inn). Plenty of parking everywhere we went. After a brief safety talk and bit of equipment orientation, we launched from a rocky beach in Freshwater Bay and went out into the Strait of San Juan de Fuca. It was absolutely gorgeous weather - sunny and calm and a perfect temperature. The water was insanely clear! We saw jellyfish and kelp crabs and all manner of birds! We even sampled a little bit of the kelp haha! Our guide, Chris, was so knowledgeable and he made the tour interesting and really fun! There's even a little cave you can swoop through if you have one of the smaller kayaks! I highly recommend you bring sturdy water shoes and waterproof camera!

This is a pretty unique place as the spit is the longest natural sand spit in the United States,…read moremeasuring at about 5 miles long. Why isn't there an exact length? Well, it's because the spit is growing about 15 feet a year through the deposition of sediment by the motion of the tidal currents. If you have time, you can hike the entire length of the spit to reach the New Dungeness Lighthouse. There are daily tours available, or even better, you can opt to reserve to live in the lighthouse keeper's house! Don't worry about carrying all of your luggage on the hike - they will drive you in a four-wheel drive transfer vehicle. I've also heard of people boating to the lighthouse instead of land-based transportation. Anyway, this area is very gorgeous and amazing for getting outside. If you don't want to hike the spit, there's bluff trails that give amazing views. It feels like the sky and the ocean swallow you up in all of the shades of blue.

We walked on the trail that's 1 mile along near the bluff. I could stare at that forever. I took videos and it's like medicine for the soul to watch them again and again. Camping is available here. They have coin operated showers, and there's a dump station. Restrooms too.
