Moreau has truly disappointed my son and our family. We brought into their belief that Moreau staff is here for your child. They use catch phrases like we are a community and understand that kids will make mistakes, we are pillars, we will work with your child, were here for them. Well, it turned out that it didn't apply to my son. My experience with the current leadership at Moreau I feel was very bias towards my son and wife. After serving his suspension he was not afforded a review committee board meeting as described in the student handbook 2024-2025 to review parties involved, evidence etc. The principle stated that she knows my son is a good kid but it's better for him and the Moreau community for him not be a student here at the school. Our appeal to the principal decision was summited with no response from the leadership. Per student handbook, appeals are to be submitted to the principle within 24 hrs. The principal said at that moment that appeals are handled by the school president. So, the appeal was summited again to the school president. Three days pass and my wife contacted the school president who claimed she hasn't checked her emails in the past three days and that appeals are handled by the principle. The appeal was forwarded via email back to the principle. Still no response to the appeal. My son was not allowed to return to Moreau. The principle stated she's doing my son a favor by not expelling him but instead letting me withdrawal him. Well, that hasn't turned out well for my son or family. Let me share this with everyone who reading my review. Our refund was denied because of their refund policy. We have paid over $12,000 dollars in tuition to Moreau to date for my son who only has completed 3.5 weeks of school. That's right over $12,000 for 3.5 weeks of school. This should be a crime to have the ability to do this. Moreau sites that each head count for tuition is calculated in their yearly school budget. Moreau has no regards to how their decision has financially and mentally impacted my son and our family. No regards to my family budget and finances. This is unethical that Moreau is not going to refund my son tuition. There needs to be consumer protections laws for paying families at private schools such as Moreau Catholic High. Parents who currently have kids enrolled at Moreau need to question the business office about tuition insurance for consumer protection. The super sad part about all of this is Moreau touts' community but don't live up to it. My wife submitted an addendum to the appeal letter explaining how much we are involved in the Moreau and Oakland Diocese community. The school principal and president apparently don't care that I'm highly known and respected in the cyo track and field community. The school principal and president don't care that I help coach Ben with the track team some years ago at Moreau. The school principal and president don't care that some of your best student athletes have been impacted by my coaching and mentoring. The school principal and president don't care about all the voluntary work my wife has done at my son middle catholic school prior to Moreau. The school principal and president don't care that many families currently that have kids enrolled at Moreau know of the contributions me and wife have done in the community. Just a pointed fact public school students have more protected student rights than private school students who pay tuition. Nonetheless, I'm seeking legal counsel. read more

It's been about 3.5 years since I wrote my original review of Moreau Catholic High School. I wrote the original review within the first or second month of my son attending the school. Now both my son and daughter attend and I have a good knowledge of most of the sports, activities, clubs, teachers, faculty, etc. Overall our experience has been top notch, it truly is the best High School in South Alameda County. We have been so pleased with the staff and faculty and we have seen such a renovation boom with new the sports field, bleachers, sound system, scoreboard, etc. They've modernized the campus theatre, and now they are in the process of renovating the individual class rooms. It's amazing to see things change so fast, right before your eyes. My son had some difficulty his sophomore year with a couple of subjects and his counselors were "On It", they worked with him with special tutoring after school and co-lab's. They made sure he didn't slip through the cracks, my wife and I were amazed and grateful for the outpouring of attention when they see a student struggling. He's back on track, thanks to the staff, and is prepared for college next year. Now, is everything, (as Mary Poppins said) "Practically Perfect in Every Way"? No, we had a couple of teachers who tested our nerves, the cost of a private education has made me sweat bullets once or twice and I have not agreed with everything the upper management of the school has done, but overall I'd give the school a 95% out of 100. There is always room for improvement and it's continuing to be a great experience. If you can afford it and you wish for your children to attend one of the better colleges or universities in the country, you can't beat the higher education model of Moreau Catholic. read more

I went to public school all the way up until high school, when my parents sent me to Moreau Catholic. While I was getting almost straight A's in the public schools, I ended up with a B- average overall here. Just imagine, with those straight A's, I could have gotten into a better university. Then again, I might have been left unprepared, and would have gotten kicked out anyways. In the end, everything worked out for the better. Moreau Catholic prides itself on being a college prep institution, so most of the courses are set up in that manner. The classes are pretty rigid, but the curriculum is not structured all too differently than at the public schools, the one extra theology class per semester not withstanding. They do NOT push the Catholicism down your throat, and masses are optional. Unlike many other religious institutions (such as the Christian school my sister attended), they make no attempts to brainwash you, and all ethnic backgrounds and religions are welcome. The Bible is taught almost as a storybook instead of the end all be all. To this day, I still find some amusement in Bible stories, particularly if taken lightly, as a fairy tale of some sorts. There is a dress code, but it's very reasonable. Heck, many public schools are implementing one nowadays, so there really are no complaints. The students at Moreau back in my day were not your stereotypical snob, Catholic school kids, but from mostly middle class, working families. Of course, we did have a few of the Beamer and Benz driving crowd in attendance, but such was certainly not the norm. If you were to take out all signs of Moreau being a Catholic institution, it could easily be confused for a regular public school, probably equivalent to one in a well to do, upper middle class to upper class neighborhood. Most people already think of it as "Monroe High" anyways (after James, the president). Tuition was very reasonable in my day, but last I heard, it has been rapidly increasing. I think the school is going for exclusivity now, attracting less students overall, but of a more privileged status. There was a short stretch after I graduated when many unsavory characters were admitted without them knowing. The reputation of the institution suffered slightly because of this. I guess they are now trying to eradicate all that. At the time I was in high school, I couldn't say that I enjoyed it all that much, but looking back, I'm glad my parents didn't let me toil in the lousy public school (Mt. Eden). If only Moreau would stop sending me all those annoying donation slips every month... read more

It's pretty sad too because you would think that they would have class seeing that it is a Christian school, but that was not the case. No morals! read more

Okay, it has been a while -- and I am proud to say I am on the M.I.A. list for yet another class reunion! -- I think my parents should be issued a FAT refund check for the 4 children that they put through Moreau. Fortunately for me I did not listen to the two counselors who told me that i should go to a junior college or some sort of occupational training program. That's what I go for not being in the "in" crowd -- instantly labeled by the counseling staff as someone who wouldn't amount to much. Fortunately I didn't listen to staff's advice, went on to graduate cum laude as an undergrad and summa cum laude from grad school. Did very well for myself both professionally and financially -- and then hung it all up to mother my children. So who do I credit for my academic abilities? -- the teachers and administration at my rough and tumble grade school -- St. Joachim's in Hayward. What high school will my little darlings attend? This is probably the only thing my dad forced me to do that I am extremely grateful for. I came from Ochoa Middle School and had none of my friends were going to attend Moreau. I hated it for almost maybe a month and then I fell in love with my classmates, the teachers and the opportunities that it offered me. I probably would not have turned into the polite, well-educated woman I am today if it were not for Moreau. The teachers are amazing and actually CARE about their students. The majority of the students are genuinely nice. This school takes care of their students like no other. At times, students will complain about the hard curriculum, strict rules, etc, but honestly, it's all for the best (okay maybe letting us wear jeans wouldn't hurt!). I was on Student Government my sophomore year up until I was a senior. Mr. Peter Francis Shelley has got to be the best mentor they have at Moreau. He is one of those teachers that you could look back and say that they changed your life and guided you in the right direction. It's not only a school where you go to learn stuff then go home. It's where you are accepted into a family, learn life lessons and become a decent young adult. Year after year, the students at Moreau are some of the nicest, most considerate, respectful, well-raised young adults that I have the priviledge to work with. (Believe me, I deal with some little crappers sometimes...) And, one of the Vice-Principals is kind of a Hottie. EXTRA STAR for that. read more

There were many factors that made Moreau Catholic High School a four year fantasy camp for young teens. (HUGE female to male ratio being the main factor for heterosexual boys). But that's another story. Today's teenagers have many more social issues to deal with, and more access to information through technology. With the standards of public education diminishing by the year(Arnold is TRYING to change this, I hope), Most (not all) high schools in the East Bay struggle to truly prepare today's youth for the future. Discipline from school faculty in my eyes is lacking amongst the youth today. On top of that, with the ridiculous rise in the cost of living here during the past 10 years parents are having much difficulty affording to pull their children away from the melee of public school nonsense. If sacrifices can be made in order to provide a better opportunity for your child, Moreau Catholic High School is the answer. As far as an institution, Moreau is a true college preparatory school. Teachers are very personable, Athletic programs were fun, and school spirit was very strong (well, in my class of 1993 it was). Upon Entering the school in August 1989, Moreau had earned an award for Academic Excellence, being one of only two high schools in California to achieve it. I still remember the great impact many of the teachers left on me...Teachers such as Mr. Ron Rubio, Ms. Crawley, Ms. Rebecca Donohue, Mrs. White, Mr. Alcott, and Mr. Kaufman. Many have left this school with pride, poise and good morale. The average student graduates Moreau having completed precalculus courses and advanced English courses. The campus is small and tuition is comparable to many Universities, but the money is well spent. Of course this is a Private Catholic school, but all ethnicities and religions are welcome here. My only downfall to this school was having a guidance counselor who claimed I would amount to nothing and that my attitude was going to get me nowhere...Instead of helping me overcome adversity, he would talk me down as if he'd be willing to kick me once I'm out. (Hence, minus 2 stars from the rating) Well, I have accomplished a hell of a lot by this stage in my life compared to him, so if you or your child will be attending this fine institution, hope that your last name does not begin with the letters corresponding to Vern Vargas' list of students. He was quite demoralizing to me. In Summary, I would recommend those who can afford to send their children to a private high school to consider Moreau Catholic H.S. Parents can sleep well knowing their child is recieving top notch college preparatory education, and their child will most likely be grateful that their parents sent them to a school with a fun, personable environment. When I have children (Lord knows when I'll have time for that!) I would certainly take the financial hit and send them to this Academic Institution. HIIIYOOOO...has MCHS gone downhill or what? Or was it already down the hill when I was there and slid even further? Anyways, long story short, easiest 4 years of my life. HAHA. I love MCHS for the friend's I've made. I'm pretty sure I learned something there, but for life of me I can't remember it. In fact, I did ten times better in college then I did here, but then again it is a college prep school. I also couldn't spell the longer version of 'prep' and got lazy and put prep. I don't know how I managed to take about 3 classes of IWE by my senior year, but man GREAT times. Am I the only one who thinks like that? I think I'm solely basing this on social criteria. Yeah, cause one time I came back to do a social study on a kid there, so I had to follow him for the day and Mr. ______ (ends with a Cott starts with an Al) comes up to me and dares me to take off my hat. As an alumni of this school, I have reason to believe the education here isn't worth the money now. It could be worse in other places. Then again that was 4 years ago. But for the Catholic school environment, its alright. They're expanding the library and finally creating a drop-off zone in the front of the school. So I guess its on the upside right now. Haha. Both my husband and I were determined to send our kids to public schools. They started out in a public elementary school in the Fremont School District, and needless to say, we were sorely disappointed. We both were hard-working, tax paying citizens that didn't have the energy to constantly battle for the educational rights of our children. That is when we decided that our kids were the priority and we wanted something better for them. Moreau Catholic High School is an excellent private school that treats parents as partners and strives to develop the spiritual, social and academic growth of each student. MCHS knows how to communicate with students AND parents. In fact, they welcome it! EVERY teacher, faculty and coach that we have come across, has been CARING, SUPPORTIVE AND ENCOURAGING. MCHS has a 1-to1 laptop program that is so far advanced that these students start their high school career embracing the ever-changing world of technology. The academic standards are set high and is met with proven results. in fact, 99% of the graduates go on to a 4-year college. My kid has not yet graduated (still has a few years), but each year I have seen him thrive and grow at MCHS. He has matured not only as a smart, respectful, young man but as a thoughtful and caring human being. Go Mariners! read more

My daughter attended Public School in Bay Area from k-8. She was a good student and always on top of her class. Being a good and A student she naturally got lot of attention from her dedicated teachers. But she was not facing challenge or competition from other students. After she graduated from Middle School decided to enroll her in Moreau Catholic High School, Hayward, CA, where I knew she will get challenge from students who are smarter than her. My daughter had to go through their rigorous admission test and fortunately she got admission. In her freshman year she took Drama as extracurricular activity. Then in her sophomore and junior years she took school's great program "Mock Trial". During her time of participation, school became Champion in Alameda County Mock Trial competition in 2013 and 2014. During 2nd semester of her junior year, which just concluded yesterday, observed that her grade was going down and she was absent and tardy too many days. Noticed that some particular days of the week she is absent more. Looked like she tried to avoid test on those days hoping that I will excuse her and then she can retake those tests. Brought this to school's attention and after investigation school conformed to my suspicion. I wrote emails to all her teaches requesting to update me status of her test and homework assignments. I was surprised to find out that in some difficult subjects she missed lot of assignments and tests. In one subject she missed 6 assignments. Then on I was constantly following up with teachers everyday so that my daughter meet with teachers and reschedule test and submit missing assignments. Teachers replied everyday and updated me. From time stamped on the email I could see that some teachers even responded from their dinner table and very early in the morning from home. Within a month she was up to date with all her due tests and assignments. Her grade also went up. This was not possible without help from her dedicated teachers and school admin. My daughter is not their only student. But they gave special attention and save my daughter from complete train wreck. This is an example how teachers and school admin working together with parent can make a difference in student's life. read more

This is basically my home, from home, from home, from another home. I'm a proud Alumni of '09 here at MCHS. Went here for four years, and I do not regret it. The teachers are helpful toward each student, and are easy to talk with during/after hours. Its just like a nice tight family that you grow with, and it will always grow bigger. But to look at my own experience here lets just say. I started out as a pretty cute pimply fluffy freshmen looking forward to go here to meet new people since only four of my other classmates planned on going to Moreau. To my surprise I met so many people on the first orientation day, and the first person I met on my own has become one of my closest friends. With that year I joined Student Ambassador, and did crew for both the Fall/Spring Play. Than came Sophmore year where I dropped theatre, and tried out for baseball, and continued with Ambassador. After Junior year came on by, and I became a Link Leader to introduce them into Moreau. Finally Senior year where I became an officer in TFC (The Filipino Club), Link Leader, CMT '09 (Campus Ministry Team), and Track & Field. After looking at my experience I know I have my own regrets for not doing everything I would have cared to do. Such try out for student government, stuck with a sport, or join some clubs that were out their for my disposal, etc. Now looking at the great parts the curriculum is great where it can post a challenge mentally, and physically (as in researching). Like I said earlier the teachers care for the student body in becoming great men, and women. Sports as well keep to get better as new crop comes in to learn from the seasoned players. But to just wrap up, I wish I could repeat high school here, just to try out some things, and re-live the past. All in all if you have not been here yet give it a shot, and maybe you will love Moreau the same way I did. (Go on a tour, or set up a shadow visit) read more

as someone who went to Moreau and wanted to go there, i had an awesome experience. the kids were cool, the teachers were one of a kind, and the overall experience was irreplaceable and unique. the reason why i think Moreau gets a bad rep is that a lot of kids are sent to Moreau who don't want to be there. many go for the sake of their parents, because all their siblings attended, everyone from their elementary school applied , and there are the few who are actually encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity. you can't expect for someone to succeed at something or somewhere they hate? i admit, Moreau is an expensive school. but it remains one of the least expensive private schools in the bay area because it realizes the situation its in when providing a private education to students of less than wealthy backgrounds. my family never had a lot of money and the teachers at Moreau helped me to find ways of continuing my education there despite rising tuition. i could have gone to my local public school and had an equally fulfilling education, would i be the same person? no. Moreau actually brought out the best in me. i met good and bad teachers who taught me skills i still apply to in college. and I've made friends there who share my same views and expectations for the future. if you or your parent is considering Moreau as a possible option remember: 1. Do you want to go to a private school. (there's no uniforms but they're still a little strict and there are mandatory mass days...it can't be helped, it is a catholic school) 2. Are you and your family ready for the financial commitment. (my family sent three kids to this place, it was worth every penny but that's an ass load of pennies) 3. Can you deal with the Catholicism. (oddly enough, some students are not prepared for it even though its in the title of the school... Moreau CATHOLIC high school) if you can accept these then there shouldn't be much conflict. but as a warning note- every high school experience is different. mine was positive because i made it so, Moreau was just the place is happened at. plus, with a 98% graduation and continuation into college rate, you're future can't be that bad...mine's not. read more

The difference between public school & private school: The public school kids can afford the 40 oz. & the weed. The private school kids can afford the coke. Indeed, quite a few of my "Catholic" classmates were strung out on coke & on cheerleading, tennis, football teams. I don't know what it's like today, but when I attended there was virtually no diversity. The student population consisted of mainly Caucasians/Asians. The same is true for the staff. As a current freshman, I haven't been at Moreau for a very long time. However, I have never felt like a part of a community like the one at Moreau. I came from a private school in San Leandro. Some pros and cons are as follows: Pros: 1. Laptop program. A lot of homework is done via computer. Also, the laptops are a fundamental part of day to day life with things like email, GarageBand for band/choir classes, etc. You cannot survive without your laptop at Moreau. 2. Community. Of couse there is gossip, but if you can tell me of a school without it, you are lying. The cross country and other sports are really a family, along with clubs like theater, book club, etc. 3. Options. There are a million and a half things to do at Moreau. What I love is the idea of creating what you would like to see. You are able and encouraged to start clubs and request classes, and often these things actually happen. There are a ton of Honors and AP classes if that is what you want to do, but if not, you don't have to take those classes. 4. Religion. Moreau is a Catholic school, but a lot of people aren't Catholic. Those people are treated just like the Catholic kids. Also, religion isn't stuffed down the kids' throats every single day. Choice in beliefs is encouraged. 5. Dress code. I like the dress code. I find it easy to get dressed in the morning, but it's not as restrictive as a uniform. This might be because I came from a school with a uniform, but I love the fact that everyone has to follow a simple dress code. 6. Safety. Our security team is absolutely amazing. Even in not the best neighborhood, everyone at Moreau is so safe and well-behaved. I would not worry about safety. 7. Teachers. All of my teachers try, and most of them succeed to help kids achieve the best grades they can without spoon feeding them the answers. I have never known people who love their job as much as the teachers here. 8. School Spirit. Spirit week, and spirit in general, is so high at Moreau. Everyone, even the faculty, gets involved to put on an amazing display of spirit. 9. MCTV. The closed-circuit television program is a great way for school news to be spread, rather than just over morning announcements. 10. Collaboration. Everyone calls it "Collab" and it is a great way to talk to your teachers and do homework. This period allows many people to be in clubs, sports, etc. that take up time and also do homework. Cons: 1. Laptop program. I know that this is a pro, but it is distracting to have the entire Internet at your fingertips instead of homework. Also, many people use iChat or other things during class instead of working. 2. Gossip. It's there. It's unavoidable. 3. Teachers. Sometimes they assign way too much homework, and sometimes they don't know how to help people instead of just giving them busywork that doesn't mean much. 4. Tuition. I know they have to charge, but it's expensive. That's essentially it. I love this school, and it feels like home to me. I really would recommend Moreau to everyone. read more

Being a student at Moreau right now, i can say that this school has it's ups and downs. Ups being that there are lots of social events and the incoming freshmen class can really count on the upperclassmen to help them adjust. while there are more ups than down, the downs are pretty big. Our football team pretty much sucks. and that's an understatement. maybe we'll do better this year, who knows but as far as we all know our football team hasn't won anymore games so far. football can be a pretty big thing in high school, but considering our football team, we focus on other sports more like volleyball or tennis (Champions last year). we also have a laptop program for lower classmen right now. it works (most of the time) but it really makes everything so much easier. i think the only thing bad to that is everyone goes on iChat during class and that pretty much speaks for itself. but over all i'm glad we decided to adapt this program. I'll probably want to enjoy this school more when i get out of it, but right now, i'm really dreading to go to school tomorrow. despite all that, I would still definately recommend this school to anyone in the bay area. read more

If you value the welfare of your student, do not send them to Moreau Catholic. They have two set of rules. One for the student body and another for the athletes. The administration only care about getting their brand name out there through sports. There have been several instances of bullying and sexual harassment from certain athletes and they just get a slap on the hand while other students get the maximum consequences. The administration also coerce the staff that work there to turn their other cheek when it comes to disciplining certain athletes. This school has become the most hypocritical platform for promoting and valuing sports performance over any other forms of learning. People can continue to write positive reviews about this place without truly looking into what is really going on in this place. The only solace I find in writing this review is that God is watching and he knows the sins this school has truly committed. read more

I would urge African American families strongly against enrolling your child in this school or continuing their eduction or lack there of, at Moreau. I'm a current parent of a Moreau student and find myself questioning myself as a parent. My daughter complained continuously and I assumed that she just didn't want to be there. She complained about the teachers, the favorable treatment of Asian students, and the disregard for her education. I was able to confirm everything she complained about for 2 years. Fortunately, I made the confirmation before Moreau broke her spirit and desire for learning. I have chosen not to reenroll her next school year as a result. However, I'm extremely frustrated by my lack of action sooner and for the money that I wasted for 2 years. I'm considering whether to make a case for a refund of my money and even a case against the school. However, I don't want to get the people in trouble that confirmed her complaints. I asked that you pay close attention to what is said and what is not said by the administrators of this school. Please be aware and please listen to the complaints of your kids with an open mind, they might just be telling the truth. Good Luck! read more

Moreau is a really wonderful, nurturing, safe and dynamic learning community that should really have a bigger, more well-known reputation than it does. I know they are expanding the building in the front to add a science lab, TV studio, tech classroom and a brand new library. They are one of the only Catholic schools in the bay area with a student laptop program. My kids really transformed at Moreau, and I have volunteered and watched this place hum along. They are progressive, take risks, respond well to parents, and the teachers and staff really care about kids, about learning, and about service to the community. I can't recommend this school enough to parents, it's affordable and they give alot of financial aid if you qualify. If it were not for Moreau, my kids would not have done as well as they are doing now in college; and they still do service and care about justice issues. We need more of that today in our world.
