Sheyna was very helpful in selecting the right boat for us and her recommendation for campsites was amazing!! Everyone was super friendly and helpful. We got good fishing advice before heading out as well. We definitely want to go back and would highly recommend this place!!!

Grandview was the only resort we could find that offered the four-night reservation we needed. That, plus the accommodations, amenities, reviews, and the fact that Grandview is a local, family-owned and managed business, sealed the deal for us. Being first timers to the region, we hoped for an authentic North Woods experience. The Grandview, with its rustic, mid-20th century roots, the serenity of the lake -- especially ending each day with the call of the loons while sitting by the fire -- and the variety of outdoor activities far exceeded our expectations! Sheyna and Mark are the most friendly and welcoming hosts! They warmly greeted us, gave us the tour, and happily answered all of our questions, so that we could make the most of our stay at Grandview and Voyageurs National Park. Every time we encountered Sheyna, Mark, or their family members, Pat and Rachel, going about their business of managing the resort, we were met with smiles and good conversation, which only enhanced the quality of our experience at Grandview. We stayed in the Lakeview Cabin, which is perfect and charming in every way a cabin can be, and comfortably accommodated my husband, myself, and our teen aged son. I would be remiss if I left out the resort store, which offers a nice variety of items, and beautiful handmade gifts. We left wishing we had more time to stay and enjoy the beauty and peace of the little slice of heaven that is Grandview of Lake Kabetogama, and look forward to being "next-timers"!

UPDATE - November 10, 2020:…read more We have stayed at VPL many times (5 years, total). Last time, we also brought along my brother and his wife. They stayed at Spruce Tree cabin; we were in Cattails. We've also stayed in Loggers. We've inspected many other cabins. All are nice. 1. Secluded: IMHO, VPL is one of "the most" secluded lodges in the Northwoods (and Southern Canada); it is *easily accessible* via drive-in. I've stayed at many; "visited" a few others; seen "many more" from the water. VPL truly does encompass the whole peninsula. To get anything more secluded, you have to shell out BIG bucks for a fly-in excursion (which I have done, many times). This is *the place*. 2. Hosts / Managers: Casey and Anna - "Top-tier". I've stayed in many lodges in both the USA and Canada - there are "top-tier" hosts, and then there are "the rest". Definitely, "top-tier". 3. Amenities: They are accurately listed on the web-site - check them out. Great boat-ramp; playground; boat-house / fish-cleaning / live-bait / fuel; excellent docks for each cabin (or community docks for the "view" cabins); etc, etc... 4. Kitchen: it's small, but perfect for a week-long stay. Even though there are plenty of restaurants within easy driving distance, we ONLY eat-in during our stay. We use the kitchen and the grill (provided by VPL at each cabin) - it's fish-camp! Awesome. 5. Cabins - Part 1: Traditional, but very comfortable. Rustic - but, cozy. Some are very close to the water - with individual docks; some are "view cabins" - located high-up (you can't walk straight down to the water - need to use the community dock). We prefer the "water-side" cabins - everything is close at hand. Also, brother's family has stayed at one of the "view" cabins: truly stunning views - facing across the bay (to uninhabited Echo Island). And these "view" cabins have AWESOME fire-pits & benches for tremendous evenings. All the cabins DO have everything you need for a week-long stay. 6. Cabins - Part 2: There is a selection of both Single-room and Multi-room cabins. All have *new* mattresses: Single, Double, and King - depending on the specific cabin. No locks on the doors? It's fish-camp! Don't bring your heirloom jewelry; if you do, lock it in your car-trunk. 7. Firewood: Obviously. 8. No TV: Hooray! There are video players in each cabin - and videos at the office. Seriously? Who goes to fish-camp in the Northwoods to watch videos? Not... 9. Lake Kabetogama: If you've never been here, this lake is an AWESOME place to spend a week. Even if you don't stay at VPL, this is one place which should be on everyone's bucket-list.

The cabins are small, but private. From most of the cabins you can see no other cabins or one other cabin. There is a small beach and a playground where our kids play. It's not a luxury resort, nor is it advertised as such, but my family has a great time when we are there.

Here goes: We decided to rent a pontoon boat from the campground we are staying at for the day. We've done this many times in many places over many years. As usual they have you sign away saying you're fully responsible for the boat. But this time, nobody knew how to use the boat. "They just put it in the water two days ago"...we have a brief discussion about not feeling overly comfortable since we have to sign for it saying we've been trained but literally can't be...I finally say, We'll figure it out while we're out there. The guy who was giving the orientation made some notes on our contract that he did not know how to operate the gps/depth/fish finder etc. and said I feel for you guys, wish I could be more helpful...In my head I'm thinking. Who in their right mind rents out a 2023 Bennington without training their staff first Finally, we set off on our way, things are beautiful, we're having a good time etc; in spite of not being able to use the equipment properly.....about 1.5 hours in I get a phone call from the owner who is clearly unhappy with me from hello. He says "I just need to clear up a couple things. Btw, this call is being recorded. I had complaints from my staff that you were both ABUSIVE to them." EXCUSE me? I said?? He said yes, that "we said we could just do whatever we wanted since the staffer couldn't tell us how to use the boat." I'm like I think you must have the wrong person, I have no idea what you're talking about! He barked, You signed a legal agreement that you are responsible for anything that happens, I assured him I know what we signed which is why we were concerned about nobody knowing how to use this boat! if there was something like that said, it was a joke! He snaps back with, that's not very funny. I'm like no sir, this is not very funny at all. I can't believe we are having this conversation! At this point I am about to come unglued on this man. I said, listen buddy if you want, you can refund our money and we'll bring your boat backin right now. So we did. I Told the woman that greeted us that there had to be some massive misunderstanding. Then the staffer guy shows up. And we're like, how on earth were we "abusive" to you?? He said well, you know when you put your hands in the air and said "I guess we have free reign". Seriously man?? We both laughed after that. I asked how is that abusive!? You admiringly knew nothing! I apologized to the 60 year old man and said it would never be our intention to offend you. Mind you I'm am madder than a wet hen by now. I looked at female owner and said, if you're not comfortable with us using your boat, I'm not comfortable staying at your campground anymore and we are leaving and I would like a refund for our remaining days because I can assure you I am much more offended than that grown man right there. She refuses!!!! We left anyway because my principles are worth a lot more than a couple hundred bucks and there was no way I could stay there after being treated so horribly!! Absolutely unbelievable! Mind blown.
