After draining 180 gal., and replacing with new. He brought it back the second time, they advised him it was the fuel pump, he opted to change it himself. Problem still persisted. Took back 3rd time, and he was told they wouldn't get to it until end of week. My husband told him that was unacceptable, waiting another 3 weeks. He took the boat to another mechanic that promptly fixed it for half the price. The mgr. called him 3 days later, asking where the boat was. My husband told him that he took it to another mechanic, and it was fixed promptly. The mgr. banned him from the store!! When he drove by, he saw that charter boats go to the front of the line at at Lower Peninsula Sports!! Mechanics knowledgeable, but misdiagnosed the problem which cost me $$$.

I spent over 4k having a motor rebuilt on my Rhino at Lower Peninsula Power Sports. I brought it…read morehome, unloaded it off the trailer, and went to take it for a ride. Before I did, I checked the oil. There was no oil showing on the dipstick. I checked the coolant level and could not see the coolant in the radiator. The wiring that was disconnected for the rebuild was dangling in the engine compartment, laying across the side of the motor instead of zip tied to the frame and snapped into the OEM harnesses. It was after hours by the time I got home (we live in Kenai) and so I called the next day. I was told that the machine was ridden by their tech for a few miles and that they'd be happy to put oil and coolant in it. I just needed to bring it by and that the distance I'd have to go to have them put oil and coolant into it is unfortunate. I was told the fluid shortage was probably due to settling. No apology for failing to check the oil and coolant after it was rebuilt and ran (this is a standard of care and good practice even after a simple oil or coolant change) and asking me to bring it all the way to Homer again so they could put oil and coolant in it. I was also told that my machine was too old and that their lead tech almost quit because this rebuild frustrated him so much (Blame shifting as though this was MY FAULT) and refocusing on something other than my complaint). Prima donna mechanics are not my problem. Their hiring practices are not my problem. They need to find a tech that can get his hands dirty and that can handle the complexities of operating a wrench AND CHECK OIL!! New machines have basically all the same engine components as the older ones so that complaint is invalid. He made it sound as though I was fortunate they accepted this project and told me that even the Soldotna shop wouldn't touch it. I never asked the Soldotna shop to even look at it. He told me that it was a lesson hard learned for him as though I need to feel grateful that I gave them 4k and kept his employees working (not that I think there is a shortage of work). Had I not checked the oil and coolant, what then? it was my due diligence and OCD that saved their asses from needing to replace my motor. He also accused me of not being happy with my Rhino. If I wasn't happy with it, I wouldn't have had it rebuilt. I'm very happy with it. I'm happy that it's rebuilt (do I trust that it was done right? No. Not really. The lack of competency concerns me). I'm unhappy about their techs failure to exercise the standard of care that should be practiced in ANY mechanic shop. That they charge $105 per hour for a shop rate for a mechanic that can't check coolant and oil as he should is disappointing.
