My family and I booked the hotel somewhat reluctantly while attending a wedding at nearby Johnson Nursery, largely because the surrounding accommodations had long since sold out. With its modest three star rating, we arrived with tempered expectations and little anticipation beyond convenience.
What we found instead was a stay defined less by luxury and more by ease.
Upon arrival, one of the first things we noticed was the availability of Tesla charging stations, a detail that immediately elevated the experience for us. Not only were the chargers conveniently positioned, but there were several open spaces available, making the arrival feel seamless after a long drive.
The entrance itself, however, lacked some polish. A gentleman smoking just outside the hotel doors left a lingering scent of cigarette smoke drifting into the lobby, an unfortunate first impression that slightly disrupted the otherwise calm arrival.
Inside, the front desk was momentarily unattended, though the associate quickly emerged from the back office and welcomed us with efficiency and warmth. The check in process felt refreshingly straightforward, even charmingly old fashioned, complete with a paper registration sheet pulled from behind the desk. While the process may have felt slightly dated, there was something reassuring about the confidence and competence with which she handled it.
Our room, shared between my husband, son, and me, reflected much of the hotel itself. The décor leaned traditional and showed signs of age, but the space was exceptionally clean, which ultimately mattered far more. Unfortunately, traces of cigarette smoke lingered faintly throughout the room as well, something I found difficult to overlook despite the otherwise immaculate condition of the accommodations.
Later that evening, after returning from the wedding festivities, we encountered another guest smoking near the hotel entrance. While smoking itself is hardly unusual, its proximity to the main doors once again caused the lobby to absorb the scent in a way that diminished the atmosphere.
My son noted hearing footsteps and movement from the room above us earlier in the evening, though by bedtime the hotel had settled into complete quiet, allowing for a genuinely restful night's sleep.
The Inn at River Landing may not be the sort of destination travelers seek for indulgence or design inspiration, but that is not entirely the point. For guests attending nearby weddings or passing through eastern North Carolina, it offers something increasingly rare: a clean, convenient, uncomplicated stay with gracious service and everything necessary for a comfortable night of rest.
