In spite of the change in our birth plan, everything could not have been more smooth and exactly what we would have hoped for under the circumstances and I credit so much of that to Havilah . I interviewed several doulas leading up to our birth and would (and will!) choose Havilah every single time. She's a mom herself and knows when to be present, when to step back, and when to advocate precisely when needed.

I was a bit skeptical, as I had never first handendly witnessed the birth of a child, let alone our own, and wasn't sure how much a doula could possibly benefit the process. From the start Sarah was informative and organized. She helped us set our birthing plan and eased concerns that we both had. She has a calming demeanor about herself that helped us to relax during stressful and new situations. My wife chose to have a natural birth and Sarah deserves a lot of credit in helping us stick to that plan because I was far less useful than what I had envisioned. She was with us the entire way and knew tips and tricks that only can be learned through past experiences and education. She knew techniques to apply, positions to stand or sit in, and areas to massage during the entire labor that helped ease the process. When you watch someone you love go through something as intense as birthing a child and creating life, you can feel helpless, and it seems so obvious to me now that you would want to have someone like Sarah with you who has the best interest for your loved one and has been through the process before. I was newly pregnant and it was going to be my first time giving birth so I was very anxious. Me and my husband have no family in the area and are low income so we liked that they would be able to accept medical. We made an appointment to get seen and start the process. We met with one of their newer doulas. Everything was going good until she asked me if I liked my ob. I gave her an honest answer and told her why he made me uncomfortable. Which was that he was inappropriately looking at my chest OBSESSIVELY.It was something me and my husband noticed. We felt comfortable enough to share this with them to see what I could do from there. There response was so out of pocket to me. She literally said "oh, don't worry, he has a partner that also working the field. And we all really support and like him in Eureka"I felt completely unseen and left feeling so uncomfortable. I never went back and we did just fine on our own! Listen to your instincts always momma! We live in such a horrible place for quality medical care and unfortunately we are often a lot better with vouching for ourselves in small towns like this. There seems to be some sense of loyalty to hospital staff rather than pregnant families... which is wild to me because I went to them looking for help and for someone to vouch for me. Horrible experience that I can't get over even now being 9 months postpartum .

I think there is a great deal of misinformation out there about babies and sleep, and I would call Hailey's strategies more "family sleep learning" than anything else. I never once felt that she pressured me to use a strategy I wasn't comfortable with. She has excellent communication skills and a great deal of patience and understanding for parents and their children. Hailey works with you to create routines that are effective and sustainable for your family and parenting style, while advocating for babies and children using her vast breadth of knowledge and experience of and with them. I will never forget watching her hold my twins tenderly at night on the baby cam (she knew it was in there, of course). She has become a dear friend of our family, and our twins still call her "Nanny Hailey" years later. She was incredibly tender and gentle with them as babies and is still very patient and attentive with them now as children. In between the baby and toddler phase we had to relocate for my cancer treatment, and she even came to visit us and help out during that difficult time. Hailey is wise beyond her years and specializes in twins and multiples and has a lot of experience with singletons, too. But-- anyone with that much grace with more than one colicky, tiny, premature baby at once (like my twins) is really special! She is *still* wonderful with them and now that they are older she maintains firm boundaries when they need it, which I really appreciate-- while maintaining her kindness and respect. As babies she never left them alone, and focused on not just them but the whole family's culture around sleep. When they were old enough to sleep longer stretches she coached us through this and offered so much support throughout. She helps with sleep routines, establishing and maintaining breast and/or bottle feeding/pumping, helping to best organize your home around a life with newborns, postpartum care, support for new parents, and a refresher for parents doing it over again. She is able to identify and discuss concerns delicately and respectfully, including issues such as postpartum depression/anxiety and care of self. She is knowledgeable about safe sleep, intact care, appropriate feeding and weight gain, the wake/sleep cycle, and current CPR & First Aid practices, among many other things. I am always impressed with the continued education she pursues independently for her practice. She is such a dear friend and I trust her implicitly with the care of my children and the support she offers our family. Anyone who really needs evidence-based guidance and gentle advice for sleep learning for the whole family should consider hiring Hailey. Her rates are very reasonable too (but she is a specialist so people should keep this in mind... so much more than a sitter!). She's mentally and physically healthy/not a "risk taker", she engages older children in creative ways, and she really loves what she does. She even adored our big shedding dog! I hope that anyone who has concerns or even criticisms of "sleep training" or newborn/infant sleep can connect with her or someone like her--because she really knows her stuff.
