There were plenty. I had to ask for a finger bowl. There were four dead ones... Plus a few where the shells were in splinters. The only time I've encountered this is when the they placed in their sauce and then put in a microwave straight from a fridge. The owner said they wouldn't do that and got a single mussel in the kitchen and placed it in the microwave,...no splintered shell. However, I said it had to be in the sauce. I'm not sure she was convinced, and neither was I. The sauce was very nice, but marred by the splinters of shell. A good selection of wine. I had the Pinot Grigio - 175ml (£4.65) with the mussels and glass of Shiraz - 250ml (£5.95) with my steak. Also, had a bottle of Peroni when I first sat down. I did ask how old the steak was and told 21 days and sourced locally. I had the Filletto Pepe (£19.95 with chips), and wished I hadn't had the sauce. There was nothing wrong with the sauce, but as it was said to be 21 days old, I was playing safe. I shouldn't have done, and should have had it just as it was..... It was sublime. So tender and melt in your mouth. The chips were good too.... I was stuffed... Total bill £38.85. Although she put a lower figure into the card machine; I pointed out she was paying herself less.... Soon rectified... :-) I would return if in the area again.

The food and drink is priced fairly well in my opinion. I first ordered a banana milkshake which was delicious, served quickly and perfectly cold! A little while later I purchased a cheese and bean jacket potato (pictured) which came at the perfect temperature (hot, but not too hot that you have to wait 10minutes before attempting to eat it!). This came with very generous amounts of topping as well as a fresh side salad. Overall a great little place and I had a lovely time sitting and sketching in here. Close to Blyth Bus Station which is very convenient. Definitely plan on visiting again & hope to become w regular! :)

I went with my 2 children to meet a friend and her young child. We sat and had a coffee and some food which was nice, however I ordered toast for my son and it arrived cold, I asked for them to replace it and they refused to do so, the attitude of the staff was awful, I was then faced with 2 of their staff standing there completely having a go at me and trying to intimidate me just because I asked for them to replace my cold toast!!! I spent 20 minutes arguing with them and in the end she replaced my toast and practically threw it at me!! upon leaving doppios the young male member of staff told me good riddance and I wasn't welcome back well except he used a lovely selection of swear words including F words infront of 3 young children, at this point I went mad, I stood my ground told them what I though and then left the shop only for this male to follow me down the street still using a very colourful language and accusing me of throwing food on the floor (we didn't as it wasn't the table we were sat at!) I will never use this place ever again and since this day I know of at least 4 companies who refuse to use this company as they had seen/heard the commotion! Stear clear of this place, there are plenty of other nice places to eat/grab a coffee in blyth it really isn't worth visiting! I hope trading standards close them down! I reported them!

Love The Golden Pearl!…read more This Asian market has everything you need. Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese - things from virtually everywhere. It is a lifesaver when you want to avoid the fake Asian grocery items at Tesco and want the real stuff. They even have a great freezer section with rare fruits/vegetables and things like fresh kaffir leaf and seafood. Aside from food they also sell things like rice cookers, woks, chopsticks, etc. More recently Golden Pearl has also added a little cafe section with a menu serving mainly Thai food. They have a selection of usually 4-5 daily specials and a little seating area so you can seat and eat while reading a book or watching people walk down North Road. I would say this is definitely the best Thai food you are going to get in Durham. Sometimes some of the curries can be a bit broken, but each time I go here they seem to be getting better and better and really nailing things down.
