Our family's experience at AG Rhodes was nothing short of horrifying. We brought a 77-year-old…read morepreviously healthy man there after major back surgery with one simple goal: get him strong enough to return home safely with the assistance of a walker. Instead, after only 2 1/2 days, his condition deteriorated so dramatically that we were genuinely afraid he was going to die there. The so-called "rehab" floor was dirty and did not resemble what we expected from a professional rehabilitation facility. At one point, an Orkin pesticide employee came into the room and sprayed while patients were lying in their beds. Basic patient care was also deeply concerning. Nurses did not appear adequately trained or prepared to safely assist him with transportation to the bathroom. The "rehabilitation" itself was shockingly inadequate. What was described as rehab consisted at one point of approximately 15 minutes sitting in a group of wheelchairs and barely raising his arms. We were also extremely concerned when the rehab nurse had him performing exercises that were directly contrary to the restrictions and instructions his surgeon had given us for his back surgery. Even more concerning was how his post-surgical delirium was handled. He had already experienced delirium following his surgery, and morphine appeared to make his confusion significantly worse. We repeatedly asked the staff to stop giving him morphine because we could see the effect it was having. Despite our concerns, morphine continued to be administered, and his confusion became worse and interfered with his ability to participate in rehabilitation. Then he fell out of the bed. When we called for help and begged a nurse to assist us in getting him safely back into bed, the nurse walked down the hallway rather than providing the assistance we were desperately requesting. Things became even more frightening when we received an urgent middle-of-the-night call from the patient saying he had gotten into an altercation with nurses and that they had been aggressive toward him. Whatever the circumstances, the fact that a vulnerable post-surgical patient experiencing delirium was calling his family in the middle of the night describing an altercation with staff was deeply alarming. We also had serious concerns about the facility's medical leadership. In our experience, the facility's director/doctor was not responsive or competent in addressing the rapidly deteriorating situation. After just 2 1/2 days, we reached the point where our family believed remaining at AG Rhodes was unsafe. We called an ambulance and had him taken to the hospital. The police officers and ambulance personnel who responded told us they had personally seen troubling situations involving AG Rhodes and advised us that getting him discharged and to the hospital was the best thing we could do.

The activities director got the consent of the administrator some time ago for me to be able to come today. After arrival and starting my activity I left my activity station after realizing I'd misplaced my car keys. I told the front desk secretary I was going to my car and I'd return. I returned and my entire event setup had been taken down to my disbelief. I asked an employee where were my items. The employee connected me to the manager on duty. The manager on duty told me she instructed the staff to break down my event setup and take my things, and store them away, because; she had telephoned the administrator, and asked could I be there. He told her, no I shouldn't be there because he knew nothing about the volunteer day. I told her mam turn and look at your activity calendar on the wall and look at your activity calendar's throughout the building and it shows that I'm on the nursing home event calendar for the day. This is grossly unacceptable and the way I have been treated is beyond wrong and disrespectful. The leadership from the administrator and this manager on duty shows incompetence.

Most previous PT clinics did not provide proper (personal attention) treatment for me but never hesitated to collect a great deal of money from the insurance company. However, after having cervical spine surgery (earlier this year), my doctor referred to the FYZICAL Marietta (Sprayberry) and Kennesaw, GA locations for physical therapy. WOW, where was Ryan Reid and his staff 15 years ago? This is the most professional PT staff I have encountered. They really care about each patient and cater their treatment to the needs of healing and quick rehabilitation. I do not mean just the first visit; I mean every time you walk through the door. Each aspect of the treatment is determined to what the body needs that day! The extent of my surgery will cause me to have PT for an estimated 10-12 months. However, Ryan is doing his best to make sure I am back to my old self sooner rather than later. His workouts and technique (for me at the clinic and home exercises) are working wonders. Ryan and his staff have helped coordinate PT treatments in both Florida and soon to be in Maryland (due to travel needs) as they want to see complete recovery and they care about their patients. I want to publicly thank Ryan and all the staff for their dedication to helping me through this process.
