Really fascinating prehistoric cave drawings and stunning cave formations -- stalactites and stalagmites. We called ahead the day before to reserve a spot for a particular time. The tour lasted 1 hour. Wear good shoes because you have to climb some steps and descend some slippery steps. Don't do this tour in flip flops or heels. Probably not good for toddlers or the frail elderly because of the terrain. The tour guide speaks English and Spanish, and for our group he gave the tour in English because that's the language almost everyone spoke (a couple of Germans but he doesn't speak German).

About thirty thousand years ago, modern man began to paint in Europe. In caves such as Chauvet,…read moreAltamira, and Cueva de las Piletas pictographs from that time period can be seen (though not necessarily by the public). Granted, the number of 30,000 year old pictographs in this cave is limited, but the younger art--12,000-25,000 years old--makes this one of the more significant Paleolithic art sites in the world. Another thing that makes this cave unique is that you can tour it for a paltry sum under the guidance of one of the descendants of the discoverer of the cave, Sr. Bullon. It is truly an authentic experience, with the only improvements being stairs cut into the bedrock of the cave. Lighting is only what is carried in (recommend you bring your own, as the electric lanterns do little other than prevent tripping). The cave contains a good assortment of formations, including flowstone draperies, wedding cakes, and the like. A "living" cave (water still depositing formation), you are rightly asked not to touch anything--no surprise given that this is called the Cave of the Pools after all. The tours are irregularly timed, the best bet is to arrive by 10am. The steep climb to the entrance is test enough of the physical requirements, but be forewarned that the cave is fairly slippery, as caves are wont to be. Caver approved.

Cueva de La Pileta - Absolutely a wonderful tour. The tour guide translated the entire tour into English for us. Well worth the crazy drive to get there.

Hands down, Hotel Párraga was the best stay of my entire trip to Spain. This little hidden gem sits…read moreright in the heart of Granada, and anything I needed-- whether it be a late night snack, a new dress, shoes, souvenirs, etc and all ringing true-- was less than a 10-minute walk away. I still can't believe they consider themselves a "2-star hotel," because if this is 2 stars, I've stayed in places that deserve negative numbers. The room was incredibly affordable, chic and clean, and honestly, if I had known how much I'd fall in love with Granada, I would've extended my trip just to stay at Hotel Párraga longer! I stayed in the Deluxe Single Room on the second floor, and though I was a party of one, the room was giving "romanticize being a solo traveler". I instantly needed an impromptu photoshoot as soon as I saw the charming shutter doors and balcony overlooking the alley. There's a cozy common space on the second floor in the center of all the rooms with cozy seats, dining tables, and a tea/coffee setup available anytime. I found the space perfect for reading or working during my downtime. NOTE: Access to the hotel is easy to miss--the entrance is a glass door that requires ringing a buzzer to be let in. When exiting, be careful on your way out-- the glass is SO spotless I nearly walked into it more than once!! Cons: the front desk reception wasn't the warmest, and since it's a boutique hotel, don't expect late checkout options.

The room itself was very tidy and housekeeping did a great job. A tad smaller than I expected, but…read moretidy. The location and rates are pretty tough to beat. It's very centrally located and within very short walking distance of the city center. As for rates, I booked the room for about $100/night the week between Christmas and New Year's. If not for the cleanliness, location, and price, I wouldn't be so generous by giving three stars, for four reasons: 1) The front desk seems to have been taking a full-time siesta. They were rarely there when I needed them, but at least they were helpful when they were. 2) No breakfast included. They don't have a dining area or kitchen so instead they give you a 10% off voucher if you want to eat at the restaurant attached to the hotel, Vitela. Gee, gracias for your appreciation. 3) The room phone didn't work so I couldn't make outside calls to make reservations. In a way, this actually benefited me since I wasn't getting charged for making calls from the front desk, but by the time I could actually hunt down the person working the front desk to make the calls on my behalf, I would have rather just made the calls myself and paid for them. 4) No safe, but fortunately, nothing got stolen.
