Do not stay here. Not a hostel. Unsafe, insecure, more like a crack den. Caretaker Susan is lovely,…read morebut everything else is not good enough to call accommodation. If you chose to stay here, know that you have stayed at quite literally the worst place in Brisbane. Beds - the quilts appeared disgusting and unwashed. The bunk beds had burn marks on them which would be OK except they were very rickety and felt like they might fall apart any moment. And the top bunks swayed from side to side which made me feel sick. And without aircon or proper fans the top bunk in our room was so hot that my best mate got absolutely zero sleep. Which totally ruined our holiday. The next day she put the mattress on the dirty floor. The noise kept us awake, but at least she didn't boil from heat. Showers - there was only one shower with a working lock for 20 rooms. And it was in the men's bathroom, (being a female myself I had to actually use the men's bathroom which felt super awkward). There hooks for clothes were missing, and showers were not cleaned the entire time we were there, they were scummy, semi-broken and felt very disease-ridden. Window in room - the large glass windows were totally smashed! Some chunks of broken glass were on the floor and in the window area. The windows had thin plastic garbage bags covering the broken glass, but they were all ripped and didn't cover it much. Broken glass pieces were wedged into the window slots which jammed the windows permanently open so we couldn't close them properly. So there was nothing stopping insects, mosquitoes, spiders, also heat, and light entering. (Street lights and city lights were right outside blaring in all night). It was way worse than camping. The broken windows stopped no noise. All the screeching cars, people yelling, it was all right there. In this Valley industrial area there are loud generators, the booming showgrounds right next door, cars on the main road (St Pauls Tce) and the yelling drunk people. The noise that came in was a nightmare. Accommodation needs noise control for sleep. There was noise and light in our room all night. The place was empty, so I don't think they'll be getting the money to fix these problems any time soon. Lastly a few other things - the rock bottom disgusting carpets, gross pillows, crap mirrors, unsafe bathroom tiles, dirty sinks, strange handwash, dirty tops of showers with caked-on soap from years of previous people, pretty bad communal furniture, sad reception area, crap view of tin roofs from the smoking deck, and a bunch of other shit things that make your stay here bad. Electricity from powerpoints has possibly damaged my phone. My portable battery is having errors after a night plugged in. If you don't have an extra $2 a night to stay somewhere else (Like Bluetongue or ANYWHERE) then once you've inspected this place, I suggest you ask for the price to drop to somewhere like $4/night because honestly, truly is only worth that much. It offers you a bed. But you can't actually get any sleep in it. This is not a hostel. It is Guantanamo bay. Do not, in any desperate circumstances stay at this place. Not now, not ever.

Kookaburra Inn has private bedrooms and then with everything else is shared. Never had the chance to stay at a hostel before but if any of the other hostels have cost beds and friendly people and half decent cleanliness I'm down to give another one a go :). It's all about having fun experiences while traveling and if you meet some cool peeps along the way even better :)!! me & my So Cal friend met some friendly Europeans, fellow ozzies, asians & fair few south Americans here :D. Enough of a decked out kitchen to just go grocery shopping amd come back and cook up a storm :), cosy dining area inside and nice outdoor seating aswell. Thry have their own laundry machines out the back and ample toilets & Showers. Also the Kookaburra Inn is nestled in a grest spot in Spring Hill, with a woolies, subway priceline etc 5 mins walk away, China Town 10 mins walk same with Fortitude Valley & about a 15 minute walk if that to Story bridge or the ferrys :). The Owners Wendy & Chris are super friendly and always up for a bit of a banter & they also got a big & super gentle German Shepherd that follows the couple around when they cleaning vacated rooms or just greeting the guests :). Really enjoyed my stay here and would be more than happy to stay here if I'm ever up in Bristanbul again :D!!

The receptionist gave us a permit for our car but it didn't garuantee not getting a ticket. When we asked where to park she pointed to the 2 hour parking curb and said the meter maids don't come everyday. Also the rooms are small for the price we pay and for the rating it got on booking.com. Their only TV is in a small room. Our bedroom upstairs smelled like mold probably from the small corner sink spilling water on the carpet each time you use it. Early morning before checkout we were rudely awaken by a maintenance man pulling the carpet off the floor. It would've been very helpful if the receptionist told us the night before it happened so we wouldn't wake up in a panic.

It's located at the ceiling and you can't adjust without asking someone at the front desk to come to your room with a remote. The back hallways are a little rough and the Jabba the Hutt that cleans everything is super jumpy so try not to sneak up on her. The kitchen is NICE and the location is simply fantastic. Fourth floor was quiet and overall a wonderful place to stay for the price.

Hostels aren't supposed to be glamorous--you're lucky to find one that's clean, affordable, and…read morecomfortable--but Bunk in Brisbane is easily the worst hostel I've ever had the displeasure of visiting. From the moment we stepped into our undersized, humid, and dimly-lit room, we were greeted with a nauseating sulfuric scent seeping from the shower closet. The beds were squeaky, their frames rusty, and the bottom bunk was inhabitable for guests over 5' tall without hitting their heads when getting in or out. The elevator to access each of the five floors was tucked away in a dark and musty stairwell, and the lift itself had a broken ceiling covered in stickers and being held together by pieces of splintered wood--a very unnerving sight when entering the building in which you'll soon sleep. As for the kitchen, you'll have to first wander across the courtyard, down yet another stairwell that only M. Night Shayamalan could design, and into a basement kitchen that reeked of rotten food. False advertisements also seem to be Bunk's specialty, boasting free wifi and free drinks at its adjoined bar each night. What they fail to mention is that only your first 30 minutes of internet access are complimentary (you'll need to whip out a credit card if you want to scour the internet for new sleeping arrangements), and the "free drinks" are pre-poured, limited-in-quantity beverages that are only available right at 20:00 on the dot for the first handful of patrons to enter the bar. Oh, and if you want to catch some sun, you're better off skipping their 15-meter pool--which only has one lounge chair for the entire building to compete over--and heading to the nearest patch of grass you can find in a city park. Their staff, albeit friendly, have a habit of entering your room at all hours of the day to change back-of-door signage and using the building's intercom system to ask car owners to move their vehicles to avoid being towed. If you can make it out of Bunk Brisbane with a smile on your face and a clean bill of health, you're a winner in my book.

DO NOT book the airport pick up service as it takes an hour to pick up additional passengers, you might be better off walking back to the train station and taking the train there (at least you have control where you're going vs being driven around until the car is full). Unless you have a lot of time to go around the city then you can give it a try. I wasn't too happy about sitting in the car for an extra 35+ minutes picking other people up so imagine people who were picked up before I got on (the car was half full when I got on). They probably wasted an hour waiting for the drive to the airport. I picked this because it was a pickup from the hostel so I didn't have to walk 10-15 minutes back to the station with my luggage but really regretted this choice. I'd be at the airport 30 minutes earlier if I just took the train. I also spend 20 minutes waiting for that pick up. The walk to the museums and the parks are quite far, at least 20 minutes and you'll have to cross the bridge. There's a bus stop 5 minutes away that might take you around but I recommend double checking the bus route to be sure. I stayed in a room that's in a different building. On the 3rd floor there were only 2 shared bathroom and 2 shower spots for ladies, and another accessible bathroom with shower in there as well. Depending on how busy it is you might have to wait to use the sink. Not that many people used the social space on the 5th floor. There is no wifi in the room and only in the common area by the reception. Even then it's with super slow connection. Overall I'd recommend checking other places out.

Yes, as others have stated, it is up a long hill from the train/bus station. Yes, you pass other hostels . . BUT they can not compare. The kitchen is amazing with huge refrigerators, lockable dry food storage lockers near the kitchen, cooking utensils, dishes, etc. The views from the upper floor and deck are superb, as is the pool on that level. Just across the street is a small shopping center with a well stocked grocery store ! A movie theater, clothing, restaurants, pubs, etc. all within a block. In-room baggage storage is excellent and lockable. Has a shelf for small items and has an electrical outlet to securely charge your phone, etc. GET a transit pass/card at any station. Get on - get off - anywhere you wish, when you see something interesting. The $ you don't use, you get back, at the bus, train, or airport when you leave town. It is usable on everything ! Bus stops are about a block away. Use Google transit 'maps' to find routes and schedules to anywhere . . . and for the trains. GO TO THE KOALA SANCTUARY ! ! on the city bus FOR THE DAY ! Go to the Southbank on the weekend . . always something going on . . . Take the Catamaran ferry both directions on the river. Do so at night (dark) too ! The Fishery is across from the Milton train station about one mile (1.6 km) away. Great seafood. A couple of other local restaurant there, also. Take the bus route to Morgans Seafood Market & Takeaway, in Scarborough. Great beaches along the way. Stop wherever, then get back on. You will not believe the things you see at this business. Walk around this ocean based community, the boat docks, the beaches, everything ! Get some food to eat . . . . . The real Australia . . . . . As a fair review, I do have to mention that the bathrooms' cleanliness has gone down over the last two stays, as has that of the kitchen. Supervision of the staff seems to have become negligible. Attitude of the man doing the kitchen was less than poor (2019). None-the-less, will stay here again when Australia re-opens. Just, first, clean the stuff I use in the kitchen. Finally, the last trip I found a vast number of French and German inhabitants. They do not clean up after themselves ! Observed both groups stealing other people's food from the refrigerators ! Get a lockable (small cable lock needed for thru the zipper handles) food bag at the market. Lock needed for the dry food lockers. Enjoy yourself and life . . take risks ! Don't just 'exist'.
