Nonetheless, our experience at O Saveurs actually left me upset and unhappy, which seems out of the norm for this restaurant based on prior reviews--so it may have been a bad day or a bad server, but I felt the need to share. It was the Sunday of the May 1st holiday, and our choice of this restaurant was based on proximity to toulouse and the fact that the other michelin-starred restaurants were closed. We had made a reservation, but they were busy and we ended up at a table up in the attic under a sloped ceiling--so it was rather hot, and the ceiling clearance where my chair was located was such that one couldn't even stand up fully (and our poor sommelier had to bend awkwardly around the low ceiling to discuss the wine with us). It was obviously the worst room of the restaurant as several of the other tables had children at them--but since we were english-speaking and obviously tourists, an understandable place to put us--not a big deal overall if it hadn't been for the service issues that arose. The service initially was fine--( as an aside, while I do speak French, I've found that in general if I'm eating somewhere nice in europe, the servers are more fluent in English than I am in French/Spanish/German/etc. so I try not to torture them with my bad American accent.) Our server spoke good English, our sommelier was friendly and everything went smoothly with ordering our food and wine pairings with no issues. Unfortunately as we proceeded through the meal, the servers and sommelier disappeared, and the entire upstairs area seemed to be left to the service of a single very young-appearing waiter, who did not seem to speak any English. And perhaps because of this, we were rather ignored. For instance, I saw they had a cheese cart (I love cheese carts!) on offer for dessert, so asked that they substitute this for the regular dessert on the menu and was told it would be no problem. I was wondering how they would get a cart of cheese up the stairs, but saw them manage it for one of the adjacent tables (again, yay cheese cart!), so was looking forward to making some selections to end my meal. Sadly, when the time came for my cheese, the young waiter basically dropped a plain plate of some sliced cheese (no attempt at plating whatsoever, even) in front of me without even telling me what the cheeses were. When I stated that I was looking for the actual cheese cart to make my selections, I was greeted by a blank look and him walking away. Not walking away to find someone to help me, mind you-just ignoring me. It took about a half hour of sitting there with my plate untouched and trying to make eye contact with him (and probably looking visibly upset) for him to even return to ask if I did not like the food. When I pointed out (in french) that he had neglected to even tell me what the cheeses were, he did deign to name them. I suppose I could have done more while we were waiting (raised my voice? gotten up and made a scene?) to draw attention to the fact that I was displeased, but I hardly wanted to do that. And of course, we are in France--so it is not reasonable to be upset if someone does not speak English--but it's not that. Once we were left with this single server, we were more or less abandoned--it was not so busy that he was running around and couldn't get to us, it's that we were obviously being ignored in favor of the other native french-speaking tables. And again, I get that if you don't speak English, you may not feel comfortable or able to help us. But there were other servers in the restaurant who spoke English and would have been able to help us. It's just not acceptable at a Michelin-starred restaurant for a server to literally ignore me and walk away. I thought about mentioning the service issues when we left, but at that point we had been sitting in a hot attic for way too long and I was unhappy and really just wanted to get out of there and put the experience behind us and get on with our day. So unfortunately what should have been a nice birthday lunch was marred by essentially one bad server. The food was fine, though nothing earth-shattering, the prices were reasonable, and the location outside of Toulouse could be charming--sadly our experience was ruined by the service.
