I absolutely loved Come Together: The Beatles Concert Experience, which I attended this past weekend. A live musical and theatrical performance in an intimate setting, the entire venue simple and sufficient. Less than 500 seats in the auditorium, a good view of the stage from anywhere (stadium seating). I sat in the back row, balcony level, and had excellent viewing of the show. I recommend these seats if the front half of the theater seating is full, as viewing is better when several rows in front of you are empty. Leg room was fine, but I'm petite, so it may not be as comfortable for everyone. A lovely courtyard at the entrance of the venue on South Market Street, warmed by patio heaters and a delightful fireplace on this chilly evening in March. Ample staff who were friendly, quick, and competent in their services (scanning tickets for entry, bar/concessions stand, ushers). The theater had pretty decent sound quality (volume and clarity). Had a blast rockin to the tunes and story of the fab four, with Mania! the beatles tribute band staying in character the entire show and bringing humor on stage too. An enjoyable performance, they had attendees on their feet dancing to songs like Twist and Shout, All My Loving, and more. Nonstop fun! :) read more

We are extremely disappointed with whoever arranged the stage so poorly; they showed no respect for the audience, with the judges taking up half the stage. Hopefully, other venues won't follow this terrible arrangement, because it shows a complete lack of respect for the audience. read more

Beautiful theatre with professional usher, slanted floor means seats further back are more elevated and still get good vidibility, and voss water for 4 bucks. Only downside is they kick us out after the photo session with artists so make sure you use the bathroom right after a show. Legit place to see a kpop show with hi touch and photo as staff was very competent. Too many venues do not know how to run kpop shows. Legit yes and thumbs up for the venue and staff. read more

Exactly 25 years ago today, Beauty and the Beast opened on Broadway. I got to see it my first time this evening, performed right here at the Montgomery in San Jose. The play was very well performed and entertaining, with the youngest cast member, a 6-year old "Chip" (Reese Levine), stealing the show. It runs through April 28 and I highly recommend seeing it. The theater is a nice mid size venue. We sat in the balcony and got a great view, with no trouble at all hearing the actors or the orchestra. Interestingly though, our friends who sat on the main level said they had some difficulty with hearing the actors at times. We typically see plays in major San Francisco theaters, like the Orpheum and Golden Gate. However, because they're located in areas with a huge homeless population it has really deterred us lately from otherwise seeing plays we would've really enjoyed. The Montgomery is a refreshing change, with much easier parking to boot. I'd suggest parking in the lot where Scott's is located and take the easy 10-minute walk over to the theatre. It was definitely a much more pleasant and safer experience than you'd find in San Francisco. There's also a gas fire pit outside that is turned on in the evenings, which makes for a nice spot to gather around during intermission and after the show. read more

A LOVELY PERFORMING ARTS THEATRE... Conveniently located in downtown San Jose, next to the Tech Museum, across the street from the Convention Center, and kitty corner from the Fairmont Hotel, this lovely 475 seat theatre has managed to maintain its historic charm which I so do love. It's also intimate enough to find good seats throughout. No need to dig out your binoculars. A surprise from Hubby is what brought us to this theatre one Saturday, to see the hilarious monologue, "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus", created as a result of John Gray's book that shares the same title. With all the successes of his books, he ventured out to create a "live" stage version. Whether you're with a group of girlfriends or with your significant other, you will be laughing in your seats, realizing how much of what the storyteller, Peter Story, talks about holds much value and validity in any relationship. Just because two people love each other doesn't guarantee a smooth life together. We are different creatures with different needs. The key is recognizing those differences, understanding them, and being able to laugh at them. There are so many important points which are realized here, but for the sake of not wanting to give away the highlights, just go and see it for yourself. He tours many cities throughout the country, and with the show's success, Montgomery Theatre has asked Peter Story to return in March 2016. Cute, small theater right next to City National Civic. I watched Kawayan's "Kadiliman" ~ a wonderful ensemble of Filipino folk dancing that told the tale of darkness coming into light this passed week, and the special effects and lighting used for the show were very impressive. I say that this is a great place to watch intimate shows. You have a clear view of the stage no matter where you sit! My biggest problem with it is being unable to find parking. If you're lucky, and your show is after 6pm, you might be able to find free street parking. But it's almost unlikely because that part of downtown is the busiest! You have plenty of options, though. Many of the surrounding hotels and the convention center offer flat rates if you plan to stay in SJ longer. read more

I have seen several shows here now and I have been very happy every time. The shows are always well staged and the theater is nice because it's not too big and it's easy to see everyone. Everyone working is always friendly from the box office to the ushers. The climate is well controlled too so it's never too hot or too cold. What a nice theater this is. I've been here twice and have had good views both times. Last time I sat last row all the way towards the side and this time more towards the center and closer to the stage. Sound was okay. I'm not an expert in sound but it seemed adequate The people here were very friendly and helpful. As always the restrooms were busy especially during intermission. There were only 8 stalls but the line kept moving and everyone seemed to make it to their seats by the end of intermission. Parking is anywhere in the many lots all around this popular area. Basically it is a very nicely kept small theater with good seats and friendly staff. I will probably be back. read more

This theater may be old, but it definitely gets the job done in more ways that one, especially to those who are veterans of the stage. I'm into theatrical showcases, especially those relating to various forms of cultural dance, especially Philippine cultural dance. Organizations such as Ballet Folklorico and the Hiyas Philippine Folk Dance Company have been using this venue for years. Though Kaisahan has fallen apart, while Hiyas continues to thrive, it's because of this theater that performances are enhanced. The use of sidelights is very impressive, and there's also a pit for any orchestra to deliver a great sense of music. I've seen plays and musical performances here before, and I'm quite amazed by the sound system here despite the age of the theater. While its age is definitely niche, especially with the exterior, this theater can use a bit of a facelift. The floors are starting to get creeky, and the seats aren't as comfy as they once were. The staff for this place is also very friendly and is almost part of the reason why groups continue to come here. If there's ever an event in the Montgomery Theater, you should be glad to know that the venue will help with the quality of the performances... just as long as they're used properly. Its location in between the Tech Museum and Children's Discovery Museum sort of makes parking hard, though, but most performances take place during a time in which public parking is free, so it's sort of a non-issue. Either way, this is a great place to watch and perform in a showcase. read more

We recently went to The Battle of the Big Bands here. It is a very nice, small theater located in downtown San Jose across from the convention center. Seating was comfortable. The prices are much better if you purchase tickets directly from the box office instead of online. Parking for the box office was easy since they have a white curb right in front for people purchasing tickets. The staff was helpful for the most part. They seemed to be overly concerned, however, with people taking pictures. Their policing was more annoying than anyone taking a quick photo with their phone. An usher went around pointing a flashlight at "offenders." If they did not want photos taken, then they should have made an announcement before the show. read more

The Montgomery Theater is the venue for the Children's Musical Theater San Jose. We've been to this venue for other CMTSJ's productions - the most recently being their rendition of "Mulan." The Montgomery Theater is a cozy venue that is adequate for CMTSJ's productions. It's an old style theater with the orchestra pit located under the stage area. My grandson loves to go up to the stage and look down into the pit during the intermission. During our most recent visit, we had reserved seats in the balcony area. The view was wonderful from the balcony - my grandson loved having a bird's eye view of the stage. It's apparent that the theater needs some renovation. The sound system needs a tune up - as it was sometimes hard to hear the actors speak. The seats are a bit worn and ventilation is lacking especially in the balcony area (or maybe I was having a hot flash, but I wasn't the only one complaining that it was a bit warm). For all that the Montgomery Theater is - it is generally well kept and clean. read more

This is a cute little theater in the middle of downtown SJ. You get a good view of the entire stage from practically any seat you sit in. The acoustics are awesome and you can even fit an orchestra below the stage. The theater is small but comfortable. Get here early because parking is such a hassle in this area. It wasn't a total surprise for me as I walked into the house and caught the first aroma of "old school". Whoa! What's that smell? Smells like grandma's house! And yes, this isn't your butter popcorn theater. On this visit, we came for the Filipino movie screening of "When Love Begins". I was ready to enjoy a two hour movie with popcorn, soda, candy, widescreen, and surround sound. Instead, we walked into a 20' by 20' projection screen, a pair of DJ speakers, and movie that started 45 minutes late. Major upset but we made the most of it to get through our $16.00 movie ticket. * punches Ron S * Yes, you read that right. $16.00 for this cheap set up hosted by Filipino promoters that should have taken this to the big screen. My last Filipino movie was "The Debut" that premiered at the Great Mall Century Theater. And that was good compared to this presentation. So I'm going to list a few things to help improve the next movie venue here: - No food allowed inside the theater. Have an early meal before coming here. They sold junk food at the snack bar (candy bars, cookies, etc at $3.00 each). Snack can only be consumed at the lobby. - No cold beverages. They only sell bottled water for $2.50 (and this is the small bottle type you find a Costco). Water may be taken in the movie house. Again, I suggest having a meal before coming here. - Can I sneak in food and drinks? Go ahead and try, but they have a pretty solid security staff watching you at the doors. - Seating: The renovations introduced 523 seats (top and bottom). I recommend taking the second floor balcony seats because sound travels well to the area. Take the front row seats to maximize your visual pleasure. If you have a hard time seeing the stage, get there super early to grab front row seats next to the orchestra pit. Note: Seats don't recline. So get comfy and embrace the stranger next to you. - Bring a sweater - Note to the facilities department: Stat temp needs adjustments to 73 degrees. I understand a packed house generates a lot of heat load, but dumping too much cool air ruins the comfort zone. - Parking: I suggest parking at the Marriot public parking garage on Market St. Parking was $5.00 for three hours. Not bad. This is the same parking garage for the convention center. Walking distance is about one block. Street parking is tough. Montgomery Theater is ideal for theatrical, cultural, and musical events - not for movies. Movies belong on the big screen. Two stars for now until I have a hot date to watch a theatrical production. As for the movie, "When Love Begins" - Two stars. Typical Filipino drama / romance movie. Oh, I do love little theaters. I had been to another theater in San Jose and I was thinking this one was it. The other one was bigger and I was missing the coziness of another theater we go to in San Jose (and I hadn't even been in the Montgomery yet). So I was so thrilled when we stepped in and it WAS a cozy little theater. I like it. It was clean and comfy. It is kind of a drag that you can't bring your snacks in, but I understand. I am not sure if there are any bad seats because we were rather close and --- lucky us! -- we got an aisle! Yay! When you buy the tickets you don't get to choose you just get what they give you (again, not sure if that is the THEATER or the production company). Anyway, the bathrooms were clean. In fact during intermission I stepped into the stall and could not help but comment out loud that either a man had been in my stall or they cleaned the bathrooms since I had been in there before the show started. I thought that was pretty dang awesome that the bathrooms got checked and tidied in between acts! Again, I am not sure if that is something the theater does or the production company. I kinda think maybe the production company RENTS the entire theater and they are responsible for all that goes on there while they are doing their production, but I am not sure. So I am attributing clean bathrooms to the theater. The sound was great, the temperature was good, it was just a really, really, really nice time. Very comfortable. My work celebrate our annual graduation ceremony here. It looks impressive inside. Theater arrangement sitting is best for a nice view of the stage. They provide the ushers when you rent the place and yes you pay for their services. USHERS are not free but you need them. They know the venue and they are very professional. They wear the venue uniform and it makes the occasion much more professional when you are welcomed by a uniformed usher. Well, except for one short-tempered stage person assigned to the lighting/sound the whole staff is really nice. Three stars for the angry sound/lighting employee and difficult parking. You have to shell out at least $15-20 when you use the garage close by. The garage charge by the hour and no they don't validate. I guess the address being across from the Fairmont Hotel gives you an idea how parking is something you have to worry when you venture around this theater. read more

My co-worker and his wife were in a Cinderella show and I went to support them. This was my first time at the Montgomery Theater. It's a cute and small little theater - so you are able to see the actors well and their facial expressions. I really like the fact that it was small and intimate. All the ushers were very helpful and nice. It very much has an old school ambience to it; with a small lobby area and curtains on the side instead of doors leading into the theater. Unfortunately, the theater did not offer mics for the actors, so sometimes I could not hear what they were saying/singing. Thankfully, there were subtitles playing above the stage. If you don't mind walking a bit, Adobe actually offers parking for $5 compared to $7 at the parking garage. read more

This is a great venue...it's a medium sized theater in a nice part of downtown San Jose. Parking was easy (paid parking of course) and the venue is easy to get to. The seats are fairly small but comfortable and most of the seats in the house will afford you a pretty great view. I thought the acoustics were lovely. We came to the Montgomery Theater to see a live performance which some family members were in. I liked the venue, it seemed to have some history in the building. Seats were a little cramped though. Concessions during intermission were a no-go, tried to buy a soft pretzel for my daughter and was told "they were no good, hard as a rock", so then we asked for a churro, and was also told ---- those were "no good, and hard as rocks". So after standing in line for 12 minutes, we walked away from the concessions stand empty handed. Cute little theater, acoustics were pretty decent. I watched Into the Woods on Mother's Day 5/10/2015 at 1PM with my mom and sister and we had a great experience here! The ticket window associate was friendly, helpful and quick! The lobby greeters were so welcoming and guided us in the right direction. The programs had a great layout and the concessions were filled up and ready to go! When you are inside the theater, it's so intimate that basically everyone gets a great seat :) The show was fantastic, filled with such talented and charming young adult (high school to college aged) aspiring actors! We will definitely be coming back for the next production. I love the vibe of smaller theaters and the fact that this place is across from Cesar Chavez Plaza in Downtown San Jose is perfect. It fits so well with the "small town, stroll in the park" feel you get from walking around this area of Downtown. We walked here from the parking lot near Whispers Cafe on 2nd Street and it is $5 for the whole day on Sundays :) read more

My fiancé and I came to see A New World: intimate music from FINAL FANTASY at 9:30pm on Halloween night, and we really enjoyed it. One of the things that stuck out the most to me was the friendliness of all of the staff. Every single employee we encountered was extremely friendly, helpful, and super sweet! As we were leaving, many of them complimented the audience members, commented on how nice it was that we all clapped so much, and offered us a piece of candy because it was Halloween! I would definitely visit this theater again and would also recommend it to others! read more

I just saw the CMT Marquee of Les Miserables. The musical was incredible (& cheap)!! I laughed, I cried and I keep catching myself humming tunes from it afterwards, but then realized others around me were doing the exact same thing! Completely ignoring all that, I also loved the theatre. I loved that it was small enough that even at the back of the balcony you still had a perfect view of the stage. And yet it was big enough that you felt like you were at a 'real' broadway-style musical. I don't think the performance would have be so touching in a bigger theatre; here it is so intimate that you feel like the story is just for you but also feed off everyone else's emotions. Not to mention its the Children's Theatre and you have to support where all this amazing talent begins! I will DEFINITELY be back - I got myself a list of all of the performances in 2013 on the way out. Can't wait! read more

The performance of Mulan was awesome! Awesome voices! My family enjoyed it. The bad part is the customer service I received from the person guarding/watching the door, her name is Karen. Very rude!! I was trying to get back inside to buy food for my hungry daughter not knowing they were "closed" (door was half way open). And she immediately shut the door while I was holding it and irritatedly said, "No! We're closed.. No!! We're closed." I mean, she could have said it in a nice way! read more

Last night we saw singing in the rain at the montgomery theater in downtown san jose ! since I have been with my beloved partner for over 10 yrs, she has always told me the movie was her all-time favorite so it was a BIG surprise finding the show. the acting, singing and ABSOLUTELY amazing costumes were really exceptional, especially since it was produced by childrens theater. I am on a mission to tell all my theater-loving friends that it was a FABULOUS show and I HIGHLY recommend it. if you like live theater, you do NOT want to miss this really special theatrical event during its short run here. read more

This is such a great theatre. I was here recently during the Christmas 2010 season to watch Children's Musical Theatre of San Jose do a production of "Hairspray". It was such a cozy theatre, with seats that get a great view of the stage no matter where you sit. It's like a mini-sized Broadway theatre, equipped with everything. An orchestra pit, wings, fly system, balcony seating. It looks small but it can house pretty big productions like Hairspray. It was spectacular. The acoustics were very good, compared to even the bigger theatres that national tours come to in the big cities. read more

What a cozy Theater! :) I've performed here before for a benefit concert a year or two ago, but it wasn't until this past weekend that I've had pleasure of sitting down in the audiences. I really love how the Theater is cozy enough where you have a good view no matter where you are sit ting, but spacious enough for the sound to have great acoustics. The only thing that I didn't like was how strict they are when it comes to taking pictures inside. I understand its a copyright issue and what not, but it's kind of disappointing that we aren't able to capture anything we saw. read more

I love this theater. The house is small enough to see the performers well from every seat in the house, yet large enough to house larger shows. I loved it when OSJ performed here. CMTSJ, and Lyric Theatre are the resident groups here, both founded by John Healy in the early 70's. Front row balcony is my favorite if you can get it! read more

It is very sad to say I had a horrible experience here. My sister in law was in a show tonight and through it the whole experience was a disaster for us. I bought over $100.00 in tickets for this show, we arrived over half an hour to park and take seats. We drove to all of their suggested parking garages and lots, all of which were completely full. My mom didn't want us to miss the show so we continued in as she went home. During the end where everyone bows my mom had asked if I had a ride home. One of the workers taps me on the shoulder and demands rudely for me to put my phone away. I was completely baffled! Later while saying hello to our sister in law they had asked us to go outside less then 5 mins of the show ending. Finally we had trouble with our uber and was standing outside under their heat lamps and the same lady again asked us to completely leave. The staff are so rude have the worst location and I will never come back. I would like to say all the actors and actresses did amazing and I'm sorry the staff couldn't keep my business. read more

When you go to the Montgomery expect a beautiful or magnificent venue. But the productions of the CMTSJ are greater than any expectation I could ever have. I have seen many of the CMTSJ productions and every year there is at least one that I will return to see three or four times. Les Miserables, Jekyll and Hyde, Cats and Ragtime are just a few of the magnificent programs they have done. I was amazed by the quality of the young talent. Make this one of your stops foe great entertainment!! read more

Love this place! Because it is small- there is no such thing as a bad seat. I have seen over 15 performances at this venue and it beats all.
