Our 7-year old cat began having problems the week before last. It started out as hacking and vomiting as with hairballs, but by Thursday night she was not eating at all, and if she did drink a small amount of water, she'd immediately vomit it back up. She became a bit lethargic and was obviously losing weight. I called Friday morning, but our normal vet could not see her until the next Monday. I found that MAC could see her immediately because they are walk-in only. The doctor saw her quickly and after an exam, gave us a very reasonable quote for suggested procedures (bloodwork, IV fluids, hospitalization). We left her there for treatment over the weekend. The staff did call with updates. On Monday, a technician called to say they had no good news but were going to run more bloodwork. I asked if they had done an x-ray to check for an obstruction and she said no, and acted like that was a strange request. Later in the afternoon, the doctor called to say things were not good. He told use she had FIV (feline AIDS). That was news to us, and a very unusual disease for an indoor cat to have. He said her inability to keep anything down was likely due to a GI infection she could not fight off. He said there was nothing they could do for her and that she would probably not live much longer without eating or drinking. He said this is common with FIV cats. While he did not suggest euthanasia, when I brought that up, he seemed to think that was a good option. We went that evening, expecting to see our cat on her deathbed and to say goodbye. When we got there, she was fairly active and seemed fairly normal. After some discussion, we decided to take her home, fully expecting to be back in a few days when she began to go downhill. When we checked out, we were charged some additional fees for more bloodwork, but it was still very reasonable. For the next few days, she was still fairly lethargic, and vomited a few times after drinking. Once or twice, she did eat a few morsels and keep them down. She sis not seem to be in any pain and did not seem to be getting worse, but she needed to eat. On Thursday, we called our regular vet and got her in there. I brought all the bloodwork records from MAC. Oddly enough, none of that included the FIV test results, and when our vet did the test, it came back negative! Our doctor said that the test is very accurate. She did an x-ray, and saw what might have be a soft object in her stomach, so we had an endoscope done. That shows nothing - no tumors, no foreign objects, all was good. Since the, she has slowly started easting again and has been less lethargic. It remains to be seen what is (was) wrong, but at least she seems to be improving. I think MAC does a good job, but I question the validity of their FIV test (especially since it was not listed on their bloodwork results). I also question the doctor almost letting us euthanize our dear pet. I just believe they could have been more diligent in doing more diagnostic work (x-rays). read more

Just another surprise bill at the vet. Sit here in the exam room sir, we will take your dog to the back and tell you we did all these things to it, and you just pay your bill and like it. Here is a bunch of meds you don't need as well for your dog. I hope you enjoyed your 50-dollar exam fee. You will not get another dime from me. You have turned into just another don't care vet nickeling and diming your customers with the bill at exit. You didn't do a exam on my dog. You looked (look is key word) at the same issue as before and again said it was nothing and charged me 50 bucks to tell me that. You didn't take a temp and do an exam on my dog. And then the "Doc" who didn't see my dog or talk to me, sat there and told me the bill was correct. I bet she doesn't even know what color my dog is. She didn't look at my dog some intern did. She didn't talk to me until I spoke up about the bill. Never used to be that way there. Time to find a "vet" that will be upfront with billing. Tired of the do nothings in the world. We have used Montevallo Animal Clinic for years for all of our pets. The staff are so very kind. When we brought in one of cats that they were unfortunately unable to save, they made an impression of her paw and gave it along with a sweet handwritten note to my heartbroken daughter. Anytime she has come along, the vets have encouraged her curiosity and explained what they were doing as they took care of our animals. I wrote a review in February of this year regarding MAC and their caring and positive treatment of and interactions with my orange tabby, Charlie. Sadly Charlie became very ill very quickly a few weeks ago, and I made the painful decision to send him across "The Rainbow Bridge." He was such a sweet, great cat and I loved him so. The care and concern shown to Charlie and me by Dr. Sam Parker and his staff during this painful and heart wrenching time cannot be measured. The practice keeps extended hours, which is fantastic for those of us who work full time, and I can't say enough positive things regarding the reasonable charges for their services. We tried this vet clinic for the first time earlier this month. My husband and I, along with our 2 young children, took our dog in to have his ears checked for infection and to have a lump on his leg looked at. We filled out the paperwork and they took us back to a tiny room where we waited an hour and a half for our dog to be seen by a doctor! We had to call the front desk to find out if anyone was still there since it was close to closing time. We had to shout "hello?" from our claustrophobic room to get someone to come in and tell us what was going on. The vet finally came in and said they had an emergency, but said it like we were supposed to just be understanding and ok with waiting 1.5 hours with 2 young kids in a tiny cell with a tiny corner bench that they had to squeeze together on! We were angry by this point. If it wasn't for the fact that we desperately needed meds for our dog's ears, we would've walked out 45 minutes earlier. She looked at the lump on his leg and said it needed to be removed and biopsied immediately. The doctor, along with a vet tech, printed out a quote for the surgery. We were told it included everything. I asked if the price included the bloodwork and biopsy as well. We were told "yes, it includes everything". So, we scheduled the surgery for yesterday. My husband went to drop him off on his way to work and the front desk ladies couldn't find our dog's paperwork. My husband had to fill it all out again. That was very frustrating and unprofessional. Then when we picked him up later that day, they charged us $130 more than what was quoted. My husband tried to fight it, but ultimately left so he could get our dog home to rest. We looked back over the quote and saw that they left off the charge of having the lump biopsied. This feels very deceitful. The doctor and tech looked over that quote, even adding things and reprinting it. We asked specifically if the biopsy fee was on there and we were told, "yes". The cost seemed reasonable, so we went with it. Had we known it was going to cost over $100 more, we would've taken him to another vet. I really don't understand how this vet has so many 5 star reviews when our entire experience was just awful! We will absolutely not return to this place! read more

I recently had to take a sick puppy of ours here. The receptionist was friendly, we were a walk in but we didn't have to wait too long. The vet was great though I can't recall her name. She was very informative and went into great detail on how to medicate our other sick pups at home. If need be, this will be our go to clinic. read more

Paid $300.00 to help sick dog who was throwing up. The cost included a bunch of meds and tests. The dog got worse. I went back 5 days later and the wanted to charge me to run the same tests again and said they didn't know what was wrong. I said that they could run all the tests again, but I didn't think it is fair that I should pay for it since, not only did you not make my dog better, it actually became sicker. I said that they mis-diagnosed my dog and possibly poisoned him and I expected them to work with me, financially, to fix their mistake. They said that I could take my business elsewhere. I went to the clinic at PetSmart. They gave him some meds and he is getting better. I am considering filing a claim in smallclaims court. To make a long story short, they are not good vets, but are good businessmen. Go somewhere else if your pet is ill unless it is obvious what it is. I will never go there again. I have enjoyed this clinic ever since the new ownership. The Doctors their are kind and know their animals. The support staff has always been good with handling my 85lbs lab/hound mutt. She has been seeing them for 9 years now going on ten. They were sympathetic when I had to take my mother's 16 YO beagle for euthanasia, no judgement was passed. They are professionals and they will give the information to you straight. They are very efficient in getting their clients in and out, walk in/appointment. I read someone else's comment, and could not disagree with her more. First of all it is an animal clinic. Key word "animal" here. Second of all, you rescued a litter of kittens from the side of the road. Each needing their own individualized health assessment and shots which takes time to do it right. Third, if there were some old harpies being rude and creating a stressful environment, you should be happy that they were going to be gone soon enough and the Staff could personalize your care with lower tension levels. Instead you got inpatient and joined the harpies. Vet clinics have a love for animals, and want to see their clients(animals) live to their fullest potential, and "Beneficence" on part of the animal is their job. At the MAC, they do that. If you're feelings get hurt because they are insisting you do something for the good of your pet, don't be offended. Remember they are giving advice that pet owners need to hear because most people cannot recognize the needs of their pet. I live in Birmingham and have no problem driving an hour to see these professionals and quite frankly they are better than most clinics in the city, but their affordable care is better than anywhere in the Birmingham area. read more

This is not the fanciest animal clinic you'll ever be in but it is the nicest and most affordable for great care. There are three vets, numerous techs and friendly workers here. I have been to nicer vets offices and had the worst service. The doctors here care, follow up calls are made when your pet is sick, cards sent by the whole staff when you have to let a loved one walk across the Rainbow bridge. I've been going to this clinic since the days of Dr. Day. It offers quality care, reasonable pricing and compassion. I drive 25-35 minutes to this clinic because it is worth it! Several years ago my dog had a bladder operation and I compared the cost of the operation between Montevallo and a clinic close to my house; 200.00 difference plus the post op after care was far less. Their RX food is less too. Besides pricing this clinic has never fallen short of excellent service... Ive been going here for 20 years. While sitting in the waiting room others verbalize similar sentiments about the care they receive...it is a down home low overhead clinic that delivers excellent care and friendly service. read more
