I live in the area and drive by often and see such happy little kids come out and remember the times my son used to come here. Such amazing memories and great education system. The director is a teacher herself and constantly emphasized workshops and trainings for the teachers after school. The teachers were all CPR certified and trained with the school and always getting more training to be better Montessori teachers. I ran into a new teacher or staff and she is so well mannered and kind. I also saw some old teachers that my son was in class with and brought my son back to say Hi! They miss him! Awwww! My son remembers them and has benefited and advanced so much faster and more than the public school kids. He loved it here! If I ever have another kid, I'll be back! Kids here learn to read and write and potty train way faster than other school kids. My pediatrician mom friend even still speaks highly of the time her kids came here. Great school! Check them out! There are very few places that I can say educate and prepare children for elementary school. Montessori On Elm does just that. Children who attend here are often told how advanced they are at their grade level. The staff is friendly. The summer program is amazing. Even during the summer program children are taught according to their individual learning level. I really need to share this!! 13 years ago , my daughter came to the school when she was 3 years old. when she turned 4 .. i became a single mom and only relied on my income and so I thought it would be a good idea to move my daughter to public school although it was heartbreaking to think about it I spoke to Miss Cassandra and Miss Cassandra very passionately and with empathy advise me to keep her there for at least one more year and she promised that I wouldn't regret it because my daughter would have the best foundation for her education and growth and I believed her and I kept my daughter there for another year barely making ends meet .When I took my daughter out at 5 , my daughter had the education of a second grader but in the public school system she had to be placed in kinder . She was always excelling and fast she bored so she became teachers helper or asked for more work or helped others .. she is now 16 years old , going to Wilson high school and has been a straight A student consistently since elementary until now .. her gpa has been and still is 4.0 and she's in the medical field path as of now . Now I have a 4 year old boy went to public school for pre K last year , he did okay , and he had to be switched to another school for TK and he is doing poor not doing well with the public school system being structured, rigid and too many kids for an assistant . I am bringing my son to Montessori on elm because I know their way works . Ms. Aida , ms Mary and Ms Casandra are on the parents and kids camp . My Oldest daughter came to this school when she was 2yrs old and was there for 5 years and then went on to public school she is currently 15 and is a straight A student and does very well in school because of the caring of each teacher has for their kids. We have been sending our kids to Montessori on Elm for the last 5 years. Their academic program is very good and we are really big fans of the Montessori method. The kids have "jobs" to do which are really learning activities where they play and learn. Their teaching method is very effective and also includes learning to be more independent and care for plants etc. Our older son graduated and went into public school and he is at the top of his class. I am not sure if one star is appropriate but I will give them the benefit of the doubt since I had very low visibility with how my child spent time here. There is very little communication between the staff and parents, at least for Room 1 which is where the babies are at. My child started here at 6 months. Shortly after my child began developing pretty severe separation anxiety which still persists today at 16 months. This, of course, may not have to do with the facility but it also might have everything to do with them. I know that the worksheet they would hand to me at the end of the day were not always correct because it didn't reflect the food and milk I had provided. My child was out sick almost every other week, if not more because my child was constantly sick. My child had, HM&F disease, Roseola, to name a few... There were some months that my child only went a couple of days. Almost every time I picked my child up, there was dried snot all over my child's face. it had certainly been there long enough to dry and harden. My child would also be extremely hungry and tired. The "teacher" that often took my child from the front rarely smiled or gave me any feedback. Even though my child was not there often, they often requested more diapers from me which leads me to believe they were using my child's diapers on other kids. At the end of the day, I felt terrible leaving my child there so I found somewhere else I could trust. I just had a bad feeling that my child was not being taken care of. My child seems much more relaxed and happy at the new day care and has only been sick once in two months. Also, the director drives a $100k+ BMW SUV. I don't know if she is really interested in the well being of children. I would not recommend this place. read more

My son speaks in full sentences, has fantastic social skills, strong self-help skills, and great emotional regulation. I thank Montessori on Elm for how far he has come. This place is a hidden gem! The best school for early learning! I absolutely love the Montessori style of teaching. The teachers here are all very experienced and have been a great help in the development of my daughter. I started my daughter at this school when she was only 13 months, they even assisted with toilet training! She's now 5 years old and already transitioning into the 2nd grade class! I love how the Director does not place limits on learning as opposed to the public school system which only teaches their students to a set standard. I have a friend whose child is in the 1st grade at a LBUSD school, and my daughter was learning the same concepts as she was transitioning into Kindergarten at MOE. Also, as apart of the curriculum, the children are taught to be self-responsible (cleaning and other "jobs") and well-mannered. Finally, the hours! Great for the working parent. She seemed annoyed to answer any questions and kept asking "is that all" At one point I couldn't understand her so she got irritated. Also when asked how they discipline the kids (since she was so rude I was concerned she talks to the kids like that ) she said I can't tell you. You have to give me an example. Our son started at Montessori on Elm at twelve weeks in the infant program, at 16 months he is now in the toddler program. We LOVE this school. The staff actually cares about the kids and it shows in the care. We came to this location because of the outdoor play areas and price we could afford but we stayed for the great great wonderful staff. My son has been attending this school for almost for years and the results have been amazing. Not only do the students learn the regular curriculum, they learn life skills, the school focuses on the children's speaking up for themselves and problem solving. My son's vocabulary is so mature. Mrs. Aida is an amazing preschool teacher with so much patience. The Kinder and 1st grade teachers are great as well. He is learning so much more than I think he would in the District. This review is not on the childcare/curriculum it is on how they do business. So back in Feb. 2020 My wife and I took a tour to enroll my, at the time, 7 month old daughter. Everything looked ok and like many others said the vibe was ok. We were in a tight spot with childcare and finances and this place made the most sense at the time. Anyways we decided to enroll my daughter. Ms Cassandra, the director, asked for a $200 deposit only cash. I thought that was a little strange. It was to hold a spot. Fast forward we go into a pandemic and my wife starts working from home so we don't need childcare. They reopen in May but Covid is still going strong and we feel uncomfortable taking our child anywhere! So this week we decide to just keep her at home until maybe a vaccine or a drop in the curve. I call Ms Cassandra and let her know. Mind you I have not seen or talked to her since the tour. Side note they are not good about keeping people up to date on anything going on with the school. I've had to call numerous amounts of times. Anyways I let her know because she told me there were tons of kids on the waitlist and I didn't want to take up a spot. I asked if I could have my deposit back and she said no. She states she mentioned that in the beginning, which I don't recall but she states that is the policy. I told her I understand policies BUT under the circumstances we are in now where is the empathy and flexibility. Everyone is hurting for money and $200 goes a long way for a family. I gave her $200 cash for nothing. I have met her once spoke to her handful of times and gave her $200 for a tour and a spot in line during a pandemic! If she can't be understanding, empathetic and thoughtful during a health crisis then I am definitely elated I did not take my child here!!! It speaks loud and clear what this schools bottom line is and that's money. I don't know how the other teachers are because I haven't interacted with them at all but if the director/leader is like this then the whole system is going to be flawed. This is just my honest opinion. I am not an upset or hateful individual. I have my son Matteo Sanchez in the Montessori on Elm school, and we have noticed such a dramatic improvement in his development. His teacher in Room 5 genuinely loves my son and I am so thankful to have someone I can trust when I have work. Right now, you can not enter the school unless given a tour due to covid -- HOWEVER I love that! With the way the world is now with young kids, I prefer no parents or random strangers takin a tour of the inside of the school or parents in general -- safety is first in this school which i LOVE, You ring a doorbell, they come out and personally hand you your child or take your child to class. My husband and I looked around different Montessori schools Long Beach and instantly fell in love with this school. It is the most affordable and best service/care that any parent can ask for - the teachers are very nice and our son love several of the staff here. I'm quite perplexed by the negative reviews here, complaining about pricing and service. Sure you can find a non-licensed caretaker/facilities out there and put your child into different risks. We couldn't love this preschool more. We moved here a few months ago with a lot of anxiety about how it would impact our three-year-old. Montessori on Elm has been the best home for him, and is a place he genuinely looks forward to going every day. The teachers are affirming, loving, and follow the Montessori model with great success. We also love how MoE promotes a healthy diet (e.g. on Halloween, children were given adorable kids toothbrushes with fun kid features). We are already looking forward to our younger child enrolling at some point in the future. Here's what I'll say about MY experience - this is the best place I have ever found for my son. As a new mother I needed a safe, reliable and loving care center for him while my husband and I are at work. We care about safety and well being, as well as his development. This spot covered all the bases. From the moment I talked to Mrs. Cassandra I knew this was our second home. Her love for the children is out of this world. When my husband transferred locations for work we had to move our son out of the infant program and into another school. That's the current situation, but I miss M.O.E. so badly that I am now trying to reconfigure my schedule and move ANYTHING around to get him back into this school ASAP. It's a dream spot. The only drawback to writing a good review here is that you may read this and take my spot. ;) That said, the teachers deserve to be applauded and celebrated for the incredible work they do and the care they provide. I never experienced directly with this school, but was put off by the email and phone communication I had. Ms. Cassandra emailed me a week and a half after my online inquiry. I said specifically in my email that I was out of the country and would not be reachable by phone and the type of information / pricing I was looking for. I got sent a "cookie cutter" FAQ email with no answers to any questions. So, I called - even though it's $2.29 per minute, and we talked for a couple of minutes (I don't even think she was listening to what I was saying), and then she asked for me to call her back in five minutes because she had another call. I restated that I was calling her internationally and she still insisted I call her back. Needless to say, I didn't waste another penny on calling her back. Poor customer service. If she is this careless and thoughtless on the phone, I would not trust her with my newborn. read more

Ever heard the phrase "you don't know a good thing until it's gone"? Well, I knew Montessori on Elm was a good thing when I had it and I missed it even more when I moved out of the state and it was gone . . . My son attended school here from 6 months to 21 months and not only did he have a great time in the program, I had a great time watching him grow through the program! The teachers and directors were like an extension of our little family - they knew he and I by name, greeted us warmly every morning and hugged him goodbye every afternoon. I never felt uncomfortable with leaving him as I knew that each person in the school genuinely cared about him. Not all Montessori schools are created equal and this school is definitely one of the few that actually focuses on Montessori practices and the Montessori style of learning/developing. I saw this right away when he was in the toddler program - his practical life skills were evident daily within our home; while the focus on his social, emotional, and physical development was also very clear. Additionally, I loved the flexibility of the infant program - they allow the babies to be on a schedule that works best for them, rather than having set feeding times and sleeping times. Each time I see him throw something away in the trash or push in his chair or use sign langue when saying a color name, I know that Montessori on Elm helped in the development of these skills. And even today (over a month since we have left) he will still ask for some of his little friends by name. All of these let me know that his time there had a lasting impression on him (even at his young age) in more ways than he will ever know. read more

Like all parents, I was extremely nervous about going back to work and the idea of dropping my little one off at school was something that I absolutely dreaded. He began when he was just over 6 months (back in Sept 2015). I was prepared to pull him out immediately if there were any warning signs that he was unhappy or not being treated properly. However, quite the opposite happened. Within days he started showing improvement in his crawling ability. That was the first sign that we had put him in a good place. When we'd drop him off he'd be excited, and picking him up he'd seem happy and well cared for. When i'd drop in on him he'd be exploring the floor and gymboree type equipment that they have or in a chair focused on some toy he was trying to master. He has also become very social with other babies... loves to be around them. While there are some things that could use some improvement, those things are minor in my opinion. I'm happy overall with his care at Montessori on Elm, I believe that the teachers care for him well and that he is thriving with his development. We especially like his afternoon teacher, Ms Elouisa (I think that's her name). She's very sweet and is so attentive with our son. He lights up when he interacts with her, and so I knew that she must treat him with care. I read a lot of yelp reviews to help me decide on different places to use,go etc. But I never write one till now I really want to let other parents know about this school. I agree with almost all parents in some form or fashion. Yes when I researched this school it seemed like the perfect place for my 7month old!...i loved what they had to offer but I couldn't have been no farther from the truth!..these teachers here have no people skills what so ever!!..they in no way make a parent feel comfortable and secure about leaving there precious Lil one! My Lil one attended here for a few months during the whole time there she remained sick. Runny nose/full of mucous/diarrhea and I took her to her pediatrician week after week wandering why is she constantly sick? And her dr. Informed me that it was from the school..at 1st I couldn't believe it but after taking her out she has not been sick since! I removed her after I popped in one day and saw her on the floor crying and screaming along with other children while the teachers were just walking around ignoring them!...i picked up my child signed her out and left!..and ms Cassandra nor ms.Ayomi called me to ask what happened or why didn't I returned?..when I went back to retrieve my baby's things no one but one teacher even spoke to me!..RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL!!! Especially the morning head teacher in the infant room! This is my son's first school and experience is not pleasant at all... i know i dont have any other school to compare it to but its not even what you would expect from a school which claims to be not a day care but a pre school... the staff is really unprofessional ... no people skills.... rude ..... when you walkin to the class, teachers will behave differently (all nice) and as soon as you leave they are back to how they are really with the kids (no courtesy no care) ... they just get their frustration out on kids and it does not happen after one hour of their start time... my son's teacher walked in at 9 AM the other day and already she was shouting at the kids saying i cant do all this for you .... read more

Be aware that the owner/director Cassandra is very rude and off putting, and has no people skills what so ever. My daughter was previously enrolled at this school, and I was thinking of putting her back there only because it is familiar to her and there are a few good teachers there (Mary Ellen is awesome). But in the past she has been bitten twice (once on the face and once on the leg, both leaving bruises) within 3 school days! I have never been able to establish a decent relationship with the director due to her impatience and her my way or the highway attitude. Anyway I was approved to start school for my daughter this Thursday, but after attempting to meet and update paper work with the assistant, I had a verbal altercation with Cassandra, because I was unable to show up when she wanted me due to my work schedule. She ended the conversation by telling me that she would advise her assistant on how to deal with me. Much to my surprise, after calling her director, they all of a sudden just filled the last spot when I didn't show up Thursday (I was scheduled to come Friday). So now I have to start over to find a new child care provider. It is more of a nuisance than its worth, but I know it's better that my daughter be somewhere that I can have a decent relationship with the staff. If you never or minimally have to deal with Cassandra you may like the school and or some of the staff. Happy hunting read more

I am including my previous review of Montessori on Elm below, as it no longer shows up. I gave them 5 stars then and am happy to give them 5 stars again. I would like to specifically address a few comments that have been made regarding Ms. Cassandra. To say that she doesn't care about the kids could not be further from the truth. Instead of opening several schools in affluent areas (like members of her family have) in order to make money, she chooses to be in Downtown Long Beach because she feels that EVERY child deserves to have access to a quality education. She is personally involved with every child, she knows them all by name, knows their parents, is aware of each child's academic progress. She can be difficult to get in touch with because she is so hands on running her school. I agree that she should consider hiring someone to handle the administrative aspects (returning calls, etc), but I can't reduce her score for being too invested in the kids. Our son aged out almost 5 years ago and to this day I wish that he could go back. He thrived academically, socially, and emotionally at Montessori on Elm and he left with a passion for education and learning. My wife and I often say that if we had the money, we would fund Ms. Cassandra to open K-12 just so we could send our son back there. You would be fortunate to have your child in a school like Montessori on Elm. Previous Review: We enrolled our son at Montessori on Elm mostly by chance. The Kindergarten programs in our area do not offer after school care so public school was out. Although this does help to explain the failure of our educational system. We live in a low socioeconomic area, translation, WE ARE POOR. So how are people who have to work supposed to get their kids into Kindergarten? Not to mention single parents. Sorry Timmy, we can't afford to eat until you finish Kindergarten because I can't work and get you to school. Yes, I know the rain leaks through the cardboard hut, now be quiet and do your homework. Anyway, we had been searching for a few months to try and find a nonreligious private school to enroll him in. We had almost reached the point of giving up when we found Montessori on Elm. We went in to look at the school and we fell in love with it right away. The school principal sat with us for nearly 2 hours answering all of our questions and explaining the school's curriculum and philosophy to us. What we really liked on top of the great academic program was the way that the principal views education. Our son is being exposed to music and art far beyond what the public schools do. We also found the school to be a fantastic partner, not only in educating him, but in making him a good person. Our first though was that we could never afford it, but we actually ended up paying slightly less than we had been for daycare. We started him in their summer program right away so that he could acclimate before kindergarten started. The summer program is still very academic, but has a lot more fun in it as well. They bring out ponies, science shows, firemen, police officers, water play, and so much more. What we liked was that all of the fun stuff also had built in lessons. The first week he was there they had a "science/magic show" and our 5-year-old came home telling us how air pressure works. I am a college student currently applying to PhD. programs and I felt stupid. Now that he has settled into Kindergarten and they are out of the summer program I could not be happier with his education. While the public schools are teaching the alphabet and counting in the first few months of school my son is reading, writing, doing double and triple digit addition and subtraction, he comes home excited about science and explains how the world around him works. The school really focuses on each child as an individual and teaches to each child in the group. We could not be happier, we only wish that we could keep him there longer. If you enroll your child here be aware that the school has high expectations and our son has an average of 30-60 minutes of homework each night and parents are expected to be involved in helping and are expected to reinforce good behavior, manners, and discipline at home. While this is not a problem for us, I know that some people expect the schools to parent their children, if that is you, this place may not be a good fit. read more

My kids attend the school, the teachers are awasome for my oldest child, but how ever my youngest have the worst teacher ever, the teacher misplaces this lunch container, dipers are missing, and getting bit or hurt every other week, they need to get more help for the little ones. I keep a record every time the baby get injured, because I don't want the doctors to think I beat my kids. But when I show them the papers of the OUCH REPORT I am in the clear. I love this school only for my oldest child. Best education, and academic structure. but would not reccommend for the little one. I hate to change schools but may have to. read more

I felt the need to write a review...even though I never do about anything but I saw the negative reviews Montessori received and I know they don't deserve it. I have my now 5 year old here and I do understand that communicating with them is sometimes difficult...but they're taking care of our kids! Ms. Cassandra doesn't just run the school from her desk she knows every child by name and they know her. Ms. Aomi who is also administration goes to each class and helps give the teachers breaks since they're only human and Ms. Cassandra does the same. They are a little smaller than other schools in the sense that they don't have a dedicated office staff, everyone helps where it is needed so they may be difficult to contact at times, but not all the time. If you make an appt then you will get a grand tour and the whole theory of Montessori and get all your questions answered. I visited many schools before I decided on this one: kinder care which was more like a daycare than a school, Childtime was great but more expensive and any added programs cost more, and the Montessori on Atherton was frightful. Its by a creek that is full of mosquitoes and actually the mosquito guy was there to spray again when I was visiting. Most schools had one large room with all the teachers there and it was just chaotic. When I came to Montessori on Elm all there were separate classrooms with one teacher to about 12 children, refreshing. And now, 2 years later my daughter just started kindergarten at MOE and she can read and write and add and subtract and is excited about it. I like the Montessori method because I don't believe in pushing my little one when she is so little and I just needed to put her in a program because she was 3 and was asking to go to school. Her time with Ms. Aida was golden because the manners we would learn at home were reinforced in school. And now with miss Mary, she knew a lot already, but now it has all blossomed. Now it has all clicked and become easy. Just tonight she asked if she could read in her bed after all her nightime stories were read because she is so proud of herself that she can sound out the words, the light in her eyes is such a joy to see! I could see how she could be knowing too much by the time she starts 1st grade (we plan on moving to public school) and I've talked about that to the teachers, but just with anything we just need to keep encouraging her at home and continue to have it grow with fun learning activities and games when she gets home. We enrolled our child in MOE. We accidentally witnessed our baby soaked in urine and unfinished lunch being thrown in the dustbin.. when asked their response was irresponsible & careless.The teacher said they follow a schedule and they stick on to it, even if the kid is wet. The reality is all the kids are not given proper care and attention.The worst nightmare for a parent is to see their child being cornered and neglected. I wish none of the others have to go through this. I paid so many $$$ to find this out, so giving you guys a heads up..BEWARE!! read more

My daughter attended this school for almost 2 yrs as a pre-schooler and I am pleased with this school. It is unfortunate that the challenge in communicating with this school as outlined by the 2 other reviewers turned them off from trying out this school. To start with, I'm a big fan of the Montessori method of teaching -- I think this is one of the best methods out there that aims to develop in kids an internal drive to learn and achieve something - not because it pleases their parents but because it gives them a sense of accomplishment. The teachers here are well-trained, the school is clean and safe for the kids and the program is sound. It is not perfect but it is good. My daughter started kindergarten at a public school already way ahead of her peers -- she was reading, knows her numbers (not just memorizing it by rote but a clear understanding of value and quantity) , doing addition and subtraction. Her day 1 in Kindergarten she was already proficient in the areas that she needs to be proficient in (even beyond) by the end of Kindergarten! This is not to say that my child is exceptional, a big part of that is the training she got from Montessori. Her attitude about doing her work and her ability to independently do her school work has time and time again been noted by her Kindergarten teacher. My daughter attended here at Montessori on Elm for 5 years. We believe that the teachers and the way they teach had prepared her above and well-beyond her age group. Now that we moved to a very good public school system in Boston, she demonstrated how prepared and ready she is in first grade. She loves learning and is well-disciplined. She enjoys going to the library and picking a book to read. She was invited to Math league for Grade 2-6. She is respectful to her peers and teachers. She makes friends easily. read more

My elder one was in this school almost 4 years. It was really great experince. My son has learnt a lot from the school. His foundation has been laid strong in this school. Now i dont have to worry if i am going to put him another school, becuase i have that confidence that he will manage.When i compare kids of his age he is really doing great in terms of writing ,reading and other skills where other kids are not even able to read and write. I am very thankful for the teachers who taught him academics and social behaviours. I really miss all the teachers. Ms Cassandra personally take cares of each and every kid and addresses their issues and problems. Ms Ayomi is so much approachable in case of issues. Ms Mary has moulded my son. For whatever he is now its all becasue of this school Montesoori On Elm. I also had experience leaving my young toddler who loved this school. He was taken care so nicely. My husband and I are so thankful to have found this school. After visiting a few schools in the area we felt they provide the most amount of learning opportunities, value and flexibility. Their teachers are loving, nurturing and firm. All teachers seem to know all children. Their Montessori materials are classic and the parents are down to earth. Ms. Cassandra and the teachers understand both the joy and challenges that come with juggling work, family and life. Ms. Cassandra is extremely approachable and returns our non-urgent calls within a couple of hours. We also wanted to note that Emergency Department at St. Mary Medical Center across the street is specially designated by Los Angeles County as an Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics (EDAP) to care for children. read more
