Hard to miss this beautiful building near downtown Bentonville with a historical marker out front…read more The marker reads, "Built in 1890 by Captain NH Henry. Captain Henry served in the Civil War as a member of General Stonewall Jackson's artillery. After the war Henry moved to Bentonville where he helped build Bentonville's first steam railway and served as a Treasurer for Benton County. The Henry House is built in the Italianate style and the main façade has been unaltered since construction. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988." It is a two-story brick structure with Italianate architectural details like trusses in the front-facing gable, a scrollwork balustrade on the main porch, and scrolled brackets on the hood over a side entrance. This 1890 construction is a good example of the late Italianate style brick homes that were constructed in Bentonville in large quantities between 1870 and 1895. They have a good selection of movies and audio books which I enjoy. I also like the free community events like the recent Mother's Day craft and the Lunch and Learn talks. They have teen movie nights and art club and plant exchanges for adults that we have attended. I do wish they had a bigger selection of new releases and audiobooks though. And a lot of the computers, especially in the kids area, are broken. Tip: if you have a Fayetteville library card you can check out books here!

Can you imagine? Now the Massey Hotel (though not actually a hotel today), the building is listed on the Register of Historic Places. The marker denotes this little tidbit of Arkansas history: Prior to the construction of the Massey Hotel, the ca. 1840 wood-frame Eagle Hotel was located on this site. Union General Franz Sigel and some of his men were staying at the Eagle Hotel and had just ordered breakfast on March 6, 1862, when staff reported that the Confederate Army was approaching town. Sigel had to leave his meal unfinished. The armies met the following day at the Battle of Pea Ridge. General Sigel returned to Bentonville about 25 years later and remarked that he had come back to finish his breakfast.

Admission was $2 per person. I was given a free commemorative coin. I also picked up a couple of magnets. It was tempting to purchase a BB gun, but we already didn't have much room traveling. This museum was on the small side, but had high ceilings. Everything was very well-displayed. Some in glass cases. My first ever gun was a Daisy BB gun. I thought I was top stuff too with it. There was an audio tour, but I didn't partake with my dog in tow and my daughters asking a thousand questions along the way. Lol. You can't miss this charming place with the 25-foot tall "World's Largest Daisy BB Gun" standing upright near the exit! Bucket list place for history and gun lovers.
