I understand that we missed a significant museum and probably various other wonders, but we did enjoy our time in the park's beautiful English-style gardens. The place was gorgeously landscaped, full of old trees, so much lush forest green. There were various fountains and small temples. I guess the park has been around since the 1600s, though most of what is there now was built in the late 19th century. We wandered over to a lovely little lake that seemed to be the park's central gathering point. It was charming, though hilariously small for the number of boats and geese in its waters. We skipped the boat rental but enjoyed the scenery, including the 18th century Temple of Aesculapius perched on a tiny island in the lake. Next time we go to Rome, I want to go to the Galleria Borghese, which we didn't even see in our stroll through the massive park. I'm just happy we got to visit the wonderful gardens this time around.

They showcase various sculptures,…read morefountains, gifts given to popes and other amazing nooks and crannies with various flora and fauna surrounding it all. We got to view it because we had a tour of the museums that included the gardens. I believe you can only view it by controlled guided tour! Our tour guide took us through describing all the different sculptures and their significance to the Vatican. Many were gifts from heads of state. Others were placed with significance form popes from previous times. There are so many places for the people who live in the Vatican to come and find peace or relax and reflect! There is even a helipad in the back corner so the Pope can hop in and head off to his summer villa. On our tour it was even mentioned that some Popes enjoyed hunting back in the day of different animals that roamed the garden. Awesome...ancient Pope's hunted! Maybe Phil Robinson (aka Duck Dynasty) could come hunt in the garden with uncle Psi and the current Pope! You can get some different perspectives of the different buildings of the vatican from a different vantage point and really appreciate and see a different natural outdoor beauty of the Vatican!

IMO, I wouldn't make a trip solely to see this site but would definitely check out if you're already in the area since park is a nice spot to relax for a bit because it is shaded w/ tall orange trees and there are multiple benches located around the park for guests to enjoy. This is a small park on a hill that over looks Rome in the direction of the Vatican. You definitely…read moreneed a car to get up here and parking has to be paid for using a City of Rome parking app. The park is enclosed by a high wall and it is so quiet. Once you enter, the city noise is all but gone. As you approach the viewing terrace you can see the Vatican Basilica in the distance. The Basilica has the optical illusion effect of getting smaller the closer to the terrace you walk so check it out from the end of the walkway and watch it shrink as you walk toward it. There is one of the potable water fountains you'll find all over Rome here in the park. You can definitely refill you water bottle at any of these water fountains around town including this one. The park is a short walk from the 'Key hole'. You might see a line of people waiting there for a look and some days there is a food truck there as well.

So stunning It is built on the site of the 1st century AD Stadium of Domitian and follows the form of the open space of the stadium in an elongated oval.[1] The ancient Romans went there to watch the games In the 17th century it became a showcase for Baroque design, with work by Bernini and Borromini among others. The Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi stands in front of the Church of Sant'Agnese in Agone.

Unfortunately from the 16th to 19th century this place became a public execution site. Yikes. The most famous execution was Giordano Bruno in 1600, in which there is now a statue in his honor for freedom of thought. Happy thoughts, happy thoughts. Pass forward to present day. This area is lively with the open air markets where you can find vendors selling produce, flowers, spices, cheese, and artisanal goods. My boyfriend and I came here to explore the live market and also to look for souvenirs to bring home. The vendors here are really aggressive and I would have enjoyed it more if they gave me space to look instead of hound me to buy buy buy. Like chill dude can I look at what I'm buying. Sigh. We were here til closing time and even get to see how the vendors efficiently and quickly packed up their stalls and belongings to wrap up for the day. And of course... a great area to enjoy some gelato.

Vendors heckle, truffle oil flows freely, and yes, someone will try to sell you limoncello in a boot. I walked through as part of a food tour, which felt like the right way to enjoy the chaos, briefly, and with snacks elsewhere. Not the best market in Rome, but definitely the most theatrical.
