When I graduated high school, I felt like I had no direction or purpose in life. After graduating from Montclair, I feel the same way, albeit now I have at least 10,000 dollars of student debt minimum to go along with my increased depression, anxiety, and stress. I feel as though I have learned nothing that I couldn't have learned from a few Youtube videos. This isn't an institution of learning, it is an institution that seeks only to wring as much money out of you as humanly possible. Two semesters down at Montclair State as a international student, and I'd say it's been a pretty solid experience so far. The professors are supportive, and I've learned a lot in a short time. The campus has a calm vibe, which really helps during stressful weeks. There are still a few things that could be better some of the systems feel a bit slow and outdated but overall, it's a good place to grow, especially if you're focused and make the most of the resources here. Montclair State University used to be known as a great teacher's college. It's now known for their music department. At the John B. Cali Hall, we came to see and hear the great jazz vocalist Jackie Ryan, trumpeter & pianist Arturo Sandoval and violinist Vijay Guptka perform. During the week, these performers would put on master classes for students. In addition, there would be one performance that was open free to the public. Reservations required. Along with the performance, there was a one on one discussion with the musician. Parking is available in the college's parking garage. read more

Had a professor who told me I was harassing him for asking questions. Was super depressed here and made really no friends, the friends I made were lowkey crazy so that just didn't last. All the claims of inclusivity and diversity is so faked and forced. People get mad over everything and anything here. Teachings and learnings are very based off of woke opinions. Had a lot of professors tell me I was incorrect for being correct about their own woke teachings. The absence policy is insane, you can be out and have to provide an excuse for it and possibly have your A turn into a B, but the professors can be out whenever they want. Had SOME nice professors who I loved and learned a lot. Was a biology major but had to withdraw from chem and change my major because the math and science department is just FOUL. Have to say I learned absolutely nothing truly because the textbooks the professors choose are very woke and opinionated. I've had a professor base all her teachings off of articles she found on the internet that were not true at all. Might as well teach yourself which is what I had to do. The voice in the answering machine slurring its words tells you everything you need to know about Montclair. If you plan on providing any essential service in your lifetime or partaking in a career that would require some merit or effort do not go to this school. Their only bragging point is diversity. The professors are inept and unwilling to help. I trudged through two years at this school to finish out my finance degree, a decision made primarily on the schools location and an inaccurate depiction of the university. The campus is teeming with degeneracy that thankfully doesn't permeate into the business building much, but they are putting their best efforts into changing that. If you need help with anything coursework related you'll essentially be told to kick rocks by the professors who can't fathom how you don't understand a topic they've been practicing for the past twenty years and you're only hearing now for the first time. Attending this university was the worst experience I have had in my life. As a student, not once did I feel cared for by the staff and overall leaders of the university. I constantly realized that students needs and well being were not being taken into consideration when decisions were made. Not being able to provide proper food, housing, or classes/educational needs for students felt very normalized at this university, as most people I talked to had experienced at least one of these issues. The overall student population was always filled with complaints and the school and atmosphere seemed to make many students feel overwhelmed and depressed. If you have any type of disability I do not recommend this school. They will not look out for your needs. Every student was sold out as everything at this school cost quite a pretty penny, while resources that students actually needed to succeed were never purchased or achieved, but the greedy and thoughtless president of the school continued to by new mascots, trendy renovations and other embellishments to make the school look better to the public eye and online. Other schools were bought out/absorbed when the university did not have the means to tend to these extra students and needs. The university was crowded and historically overenrolled, each semester breaking the previous attendance record that was held by the classes of the semester before. The staff at most dining halls and eating establishments, the bookstore, front desk workers, security, and even student workers were very rude, unhelpful, and incompetent. If you are looking for a higher education establishment that cares about the wellness of its students and their means of success outside of scores and surface level appeal, and a place that actually wants it's students to go on to a brighter future DO NOT attend Montclair State University. read more

Good school, but their financial aid department is so unhelpful. They got the awards out super late last spring so it was hard to negotiate or plan for the cost. My daughter has a parent with super expensive medical bills and stage 4 cancer and there was no consideration for that. She has 3 people in her family attending college, and there was no taking that into account. We are out of state tuition, so they would definitely have some wiggle room. She shows up in the office and suggests all sorts of scenarios to bring the cost down and they say too bad. Her family is unable to help her like the government says we should be able to. She was worried her payment wasn't going through this semester and she would get a fee, so she pushed it through, and it took out a second one the next day. That caused an overdraft and they will not take the 60$ fee from the school off or rescind the payment. Then the bank will add their own, and the school says it will keep trying to take it out and charging her. When you call, you just get students that are from a general call bank and not helpful at all, no financial aid officer that will help you be successful. This is the most disappointing part of the school! read more

Let's talk about Montclair State University. MSU has one of the nicest campuses in New Jersey. It's spacious, open, clean, and well-maintained. It's located in beautiful Montclair (duh) and is really easy to get to. The campus is very green, with trees all throughout the commons and around all of the different buildings that reside on campus. This is something to be appreciated when you think of some of Montclair's competitors. MSU is also really close to the City! They have a train station on campus that can bring you directly into the City and that can also bring you to other close metropolitan towns. There are also several locations on campus where you can get a beautiful view of the skyline. The facilities are well-maintained and are kept updated. I've noticed that over my few years at Montclair, they've built a few new buildings and updated some of the older ones (even though Dickson is still waiting for its makeover). I've only met a handful of persons working there who had a nasty attitude. When I cancel them out, I can truly say that most of the people I've met, had to work with, or had the pleasure of learning from have been great. Campus life is...okay. As a commuter, it was really difficult for me to get involved in the school culture. I decided to join an on-campus organization and I really learned a lot about it. I think that if you have the time and are able to join some sort of campus organization, your time will be more meaningful and your experience will be full and true. Montclair is a great school. Every place has its downside but Montclair does a good job of balancing those sides out. read more

I was here twice with the family to watch my cousin perform her vocal recital. We had to park at a garage and then head over to the John J. Cali School of Music. Her performance was inside the Jed Leshowitz Recital Hall, which was in that school building. Last time was for her midterm recital, and this time was for the capstone. When we walked inside the school, we saw that the recital hall was on the right side of the building, which was next to the hallway filled with lockers. The recital hall consisted of numerous rows of non-reclining chairs. There was a separate area on the right which consisted of more chairs (handicapped area?). On the upper level, there were more chairs (probably for staff members) and an area for technical people to control the operations of the theater. Of course, on the grand stage, situated a piano. I actually had the pleasure of filming my cousin's performance. I filmed from the right side (handicapped?) part of the theater. It was fun filming her vocal performance and the accompanying pianist. The sound quality in the theater was excellent, and the lighting on and around the stage area was superior. Those of you who have to film performances in this room will benefit from the light and sound qualities available here. We had to park in a garage that was right by the sports complex. The overall condition of the garage was just okay. But the machines that we had to utilize to pay for the parking didn't work very properly. The parking attendants there had no clue on how to assist with completing the parking payment processes there. One star is removed for that reason. Overall my experience in visiting this school to film my cousin's capstone vocal recital was a very good one. Just a heads-up that if you're trying to look for the men's restroom in the School Of Music, you would have to walk past the theater, make a left on a corner, and you would see the restroom there (left side), which is across from a set of tables and chairs. Women's restroom is right across from the theater. Water fountains are located right by the theater. Finally, if you arrive late for the show's beginning, you would have to wait until the intermission so you could enter. During that time, you can see the performance on the TV screen above the theater entrance. read more

My review it's about the gym in the facility.. Which was pretty impressive. One of my friends it's a student in MSU and took me there to try out their gym. They charged me $5 and they were giving out free samples like face creams. They have a good selection of machines (the basic ones) most of them were for cardio. They have a free weight section as well. Inside the gym track is available. The gym is very clean, even the bathrooms. I would come back for a quick workout any day. read more

It's like Salem, Massachusetts on Halloween night. Bad enough, it is a ghost town on weekends since it is largely a commuter school. Food? Mediocre. Diarrhea is inevitable. Professors? Don't care. Honestly, the internet is going to guide you towards graduation more than these prestigious, degree holders ever will. Shuttle service? Don't even bother. This is a review based on my first year at MSU which is coming to a close. This place is absolutely terrible. The dining halls are dirty and have bugs in the food and have workers that are extremely unfriendly and hate life. Very few of them are actually normal people and know how to hold a short conversation or even say "hi how are you." Food is horrendous and is always random food that no one has ever seen before, they rarely have vegetables or anything remotely healthy. They also always have burgers and chicken fingers at this one station with French fries and like I don't want that every single day. Same with the pizza. It's good but I don't want that ALL THE TIME because they can't make anything else correctly. The red hawk diner is not even a fucking diner. It's just a building with a bunch of uncivilized people walking around and swearing and fighting each other, and the food is all microwaveable fake shit. The rec center is fine but has barley any free weights, outdated machines that are always broken and way too much cardio equipment. This all causes the rec to become overly crowded. Dorms have RAs that don't do shit so expect rude people who live in them to be loud and obnoxious at late hours. Btw this is a commuter school so don't expect to do anything social on campus. 4,000 people live on campus, and majority of them go home on weekends so it's a fucking ghost town. The campus has little to no events for any involvement possible for students and when they do, they only have space for 100 people or less. Advisors are useless and don't know or do shit. The campus rarely ever closes for snow storms (even though they are a commuter school). The only positive thing I have to say about this place is that I had great professors for all my classes. I learned a lot for sure from them and they were all great people. But that's it. Everything else is fucked. Don't expect to make much friends here since it's a commuter school and anyone who does live here will just leave on weekends because they're bored. People are just unfriendly and nobody cares to make new friends. All the commuters and people who go home on weekends think this is still high school. Very negative and unfriendly atmosphere here. We have visited many times and each tour has been only better, the students know their campus! The campus gets easier each time we visit, the book/apparel store are great! This is ABSOLUTELY the WORST run school as far as dealing with Student accounts I have dealt with, and I've dealt with 5. It's almost impossible to get anyone on the phone and when you do they are incompetent! They only allow the FERPA to be valid for 24 hours! Every other school it's good for a year or all 4 years. You can't get someone to answer a phone call so you can miss their 24 hour window. I'm sure that's the reason they have it. They held my daughter's refund money until I threaten them with a lawsuit. I had to do this more than once. Unless you can afford to go here without taking any loans, DON'T go to this school!!! It gets 1 star because you can't give zero stars!! read more

A family member of mine got their masters here many years ago. The campus has expanded quite a bit. This review is for the security/ campus police department. I was transporting a wheelchair user to a seminar offered on campus by a non-campus entity. They were extremely helpful in directing me to get this person very close to the entrance of the building so they would not get soaked in the morning's nor'easter. Kudos to the police officer who directed me over the phone several days ago about the best route. read more

I am currently a junior in writing this review and man I can not wait to graduate and get off this god awful WiFi. You would think being completely online in a pandemic would entice the higher-ups to make at least some improvements but no. The WiFi feels like I'm trying to run a nuclear reactor that powers the Whitehouse when in reality I am just trying to connect to a Zoom call. It is absolutely terrible and has been terribly since 2016 (from what I could find). "MSU-Secure" being the recommended service with 72mbps download speed means running zoom requires you to close literally everything on your computer. Other than that, its a decent school I guess, if you don't mind not using a computer or phone your entire time attending. read more

The profressor I have for Anatomy and physiology is great! It is a hard class but his lectures are well detailed for anyone to understand. The undergraduate admission staff guide you everything which is really helpful once you transition into a college student. I went here for two years. nothing special, really. I found what I wanted to major in and transferred out. If you're not into the college experience and just want to get a degree and commute (They seem to have improved the parking problems), I'd say come here. I haven't heard good things about the dorm life, I don't think anybody even knows who's on the athletics team other than the team themselves, and the party scene ceases to exist. That said, I've had my fair share of interesting and inspiring professors. Most people are friendly and I didn't really encounter any smartasses. Seeing as how I really didn't care for college when I came here, I'd say I'm happy I spent the time here as a student that I did. read more

So I went here this past fall for an alumni football game and my college was the visiting team. So I was there to watch the game and to do some alumni mingling during the half time. first off thank you MSU for acommidating that this past september. however the parking situation is horrible. I mean it was so confusing and then just false. It seemed like we can park in a lot that was somewhat near the stadium. we weren't sure and there was none of the campus security to ask. so we asked students and people that were near by. they said we were good and can park there. there was also no signs that said we couldn't. so we did. we came back a few hours later to a parking ticket for illegal parking. Even campus staff that was at the game said it was ok! I am just making this review though based on visiting the campus for a first time and not at all on there academics or anything for prospective students. i think this whole driving situation should be fixed tho for everyone. read more

I'm a commuter, and parking can sometimes be a B. But the professors I have had at MSU for the most part have been good, some even great. Honestly, I think that college is what you make of it. I would personally not recommend this school simply due to the lack of guidance and professionalism. Administration, Student Accounts, Financial Aid and college departments do not answer emails usually until days later. Advisors do not do their jobs. I was not able to register for classes on time because somebody did not do their job in sending me my registration pin. The dining halls have no variety, it's the same food every week and no options. They only have "good" food options when there are Campus Tours, high schools are visiting or Open House are taking place on campus with hopes of impressing potential students but once you go here, they don't really care. Some of the dining staff at Sams Place is incredibly rude for no reason and hate their jobs. They do not possess any customer service skills or simply show kindness towards the students. Do not dorm here unless you have to, on weekends everyone goes home because there's no life on campus and little to no events. The school closes dining early on Fridays and weekends, like they forget the rest of us even exist, so we have to use our money to order food elsewhere. read more

I was interested in getting more info about a graduate program (i.e., schedule, prerequisites, credits, etc) . Their website gave an email and phone number for the department head to answer questions. I emailed her twice, called her once and also called the general program office (all over the course of a three week period) . I never got any response from the department head (who the website tells you to contact) and the program office just directed me to the website and back to the department head. I never got answers to my most pressing questions. I've been to grad school twice at small and large universities so I appreciate how hard it can be to get questions answered as an outsider. But when you try to contact various officials multiple times (as instructed) and get sent in circles and essentially ignored its hard to have a great opinion of how they might treat you after you pay their tuition. I don't think anyone should have to work so hard to get simple information from a school (and certainly not ignored), especially when I'm a prospective student/customer. read more

I'm a current student at Montclair it's a great school. But what I don't like is that you are not guaranteed housing!!! They took my 300 hundred deposit since March and now it's the end of August and still nothing!!! If you don't have a car or any other way to get here then don't come here cause you are not guaranteed and the stupid thing is when you get housing in April you HAVE to move in. I was a commuter student here for four years. I read a ton of reviews about issues with advisors and scheduling, however, I never had that issue. In my department (Exercise Science), we had good advisors and professors. I really enjoyed my time here. All that being said...parking sucks big baby chunks. The way this school is run is a joke. Not a funny one either. Over the four years attending classes here (roughly 14-16 credits a semester) I have had nothing but problems seeing advisors, picking classes, and transferring credits. You see I transferred in from Rutgers University after my Gresham year because commuting seemed easier and cheaper than forming at the Rut. I was scammed in other ways at MSU. I was told that NOT ONE of my classes could be transferred from Rutgers but they gladly accepted ALL credits from Bergen. (A community college) this is ridiculous to me. Not only that but seeing an advisor is near impossible and after actually finding one, they seem bothered to help you. Sometimes after I would follow the advice given, I would return later only to be told what I did was the wrong thing to do and more classes (by advisement) would be needed. Is this a lazy way of making more money off me? And to add insult to injury the parking here is Horrendous. It seems like nearly every semester a new building or 250 THOUSAND DOLLAR HAWK STATUE is going up and taking the funding for a simple parking spot. I often have to park in a lot literally covered in pot holes and mud just to return to a 50 dollar parking ticket that they gave (by mistake).. MSU is a total scam advertised as the most diverse and cutting edge school. Oh and btw this is a commuter school!!!! But you wouldn't know that by the way they don't close the campus during a STATE OF EMERGENCY!!!! read more

There are no advisers to assist you. You can try to reach out to the registrar but no one will answer you there either. Horrible assistance. Please read everything on their website because you will wind up at the end of your 4 years and ready to graduate and then realize the 3 credits stated is not counted. But its all written on the web site, remember there is no one there to assist you so its all on your own. Don't waste your time here go to William Paterson and you don't have to pay parking there. read more

A lot of majors to choose from, convenient, but they are always under construction. I took a few classes here in 2003, and they were under construction....still are 11 years later. I'm afraid the grass is going to completely disappear. Definitely would not recommend. The administration offices on this campus are terrible and extremely disorganized. The student accounts and financial aid office have made a mistake on my account summary every single semester that I have been here, which includes charging me way more than I owed. Once I decided to get a job on campus, human resources lost my w-4 and I did not get paid for over a month. It can take up to an hour to find parking every day. There are much better schools in the area. read more
