If you're from out-of-town you'll probably drive by The Grand and pass by it without knowing it's…read morethere. The building looks like it hasn't been changed in 50 years. And, no one seems to care. This is a local's spot that I'm guessing doesn't see too much traffic from those who don't live here. It's also, one of two places to eat in Chester (other than Spud's) and the only one open late. When you walk inside, and if you aren't with a bunch of locals, people will turn and look at you (everyone is friendly). It's almost like a movie.
You'll find a few good ole boys at the bar drinking and often the same few daily. A few people will be playing the slot machines. And, others will be chatting and ordering drinks/food. There's a bar and restaurant side, and normally one bartender and another server, or one that does both. It's like a rundown dive bar and locals love it, possibly because there's no where else to go. Either way, if you are hungry you might not have any other choices. Keep in mind, even the grocery store closes at 8pm. After that, it's here, starve or go eat some of the wheat on the farms that surround the region.
The food is average and if you like greasy food, you'll love this place. They do provide value, large portions and plenty of flavor. What's their specialty? Locals will tell you the broasted chicken. Many of my friends call the restaurant "The Coop" just because of it. And, where else can you find four pieces of broasted chicken for less than $10 (and sides)?
Normally, I'll order a burger. The Brown Burger is a monstrous two patties that also carries ham, bacon and cheese. My big buddies order it, but I stick with the patty melt, and often ask for pastrami on it. The burgers taste hand-made (we know they are) and won't do you wrong. They have hand-cut fries and sweet potato tots, too. On a positive note, unlike the rest of the region, they don't use iceberg lettuce, rather fresh greens. The salad is far better than you'd expect.
Keep in mind, this is the only place in town where you can watch a game, have a beer, grab a bite and play a slot machine - without shuffling your feet. You'll find yourself in the midst of farmers, ranchers, teachers and a few other locals and full after a meal here.
