Currently there is ample parking but during the height of the pandemic sometimes the lot would fill up. The landscape is a mix of woodland and a few marshier areas by slower sections of the river. Amazingly there were no mosquitoes though you wouldn't think they would spray for them in a conservation area. Further down the road is a spot where you cam put kayaks and canoes in the water.

Wide, relatively flat, and well cared for trails follow the Nashua River and passes by the remains of the Shoeshank Mill. Wildlife seen include wild turkey, white-tailed deer, tufted titmouse, & American robin. Plenty of shore fishing and two unofficial swimming spots complete with rope swings can easily be found. There are two picnic tables by the river. It would be pretty easy to walk a kayak down to the river edge though there is a kayak put in further up route 70 (towards Lancaster center). NO AMENITIES. Please carry out your trash (especially your bags full of dog poop). Sadly, there are a lot of poop bags and Dunkin' Donuts trash, especially near popular fishing spots as of late.

The trails in this piece of woods not far from the urban parts of Leominster are well maintained…read more It's a one mile loop which in parts goes along vernal pools. However, we did not see or hear any frogs. It was not that muddy even in spring. The entrance is a rutted dirt road and parking is on gravel. This is typical New England woodland habitat but with houses visible along the trail. It's not "pure nature" but is good if you aren't able to handle strenuous hiking.

I don't know if the type of vacation (hiking and camping) helped to self select the people but by the end of the week we had gotten really close as a group. SUP YO also picked amazing guides. They were fun, funny, knowledgeable, and basically one of the gang with guide authority. The owner of the company came with us on this trip. She was fun, did everything we did, never put on any airs, and I felt like she was "one of us.". All of the food, hotel, etc was taken care of. We even celebrated a birthday for one one of the hikers in the group! I am looking for more trips to go on with SUP YO and a group of us are planning to go in another trip or a weekend hike together again!!

While not officially opened, many people are not waiting for politicians to come out and cut the…read moreribbon and are already using this trail. It has smooth, wide pavement which would be excellent for wheelchairs, but motorized vehicles are not allowed. Bikes, pedestrians, and dogs are. Like the West Fitchburg Steam Line Trail, this wends its way along a formerly industrial landscape, but also homes and homeless encampments. A man who lived in one of the adjacent houses in Fitchburg told me things have gone pretty well though residents were denied a fence. Interestingly I did see fencing on the Leominster side. There are businesses nearby where you can use the bathroom (I recommend the Four Points Hotel in Leominster) or grab something to eat or drink. Hopefully in the future some food trucks and other establishments will open along the trail. There are benches to sit and bike racks, and at least one set of tables. The area is strewn with trash and while some churches are apparently going to clean it, it's not going to stay clean because there are no trash receptacles. This is an improvement that could be made. There are also some falls that a loop path to would be nice if the homeless tents were removed. Neither end of the trail is finished yet, in the downtowns of the two cities. When ithey are I will explore those sections.

The rock walk in Fitchburg really opened my eyes more of the history of Fitchburg. Peter Capadaglia…read more brought out the history of Fitchburg with the main concern on the Rollstone bolder and Rollstone hill. The work they are doing for the city of Fitchburg to make this history more excess able and to make it a self guided tour by using QR codes on the granite post through Fitchburg all the way to the top of Rollstone hill. This is being done by all grants which we need to continue this work. Rollstone hill is a Hidden gem that needs to be made known to anyone that visits our great city of Fitchburg. Peter does two guided tours a year one in the summer one in the fall. This summer tour they were able to have the assistance of FATV Fitchburg Access Television. They filmed the tour and are going to make it available to people who would never be able to make up top to Rollstone hill and to others who never heard of Rollstone hill in Fitchburg. The guide tells you a lot about the local history and his pace is really good. As expected since the tour goes up a large hill into a quarry, there's some steep climbs and lots of loose rocks around, but it was manageable. I know they're working on creating a self-guided option. If you get a chance to do the rock walk, do it!

The actual location of these trails is along Route 2 eastbound near power lines, beyond Palmer Road…read morebut before Mount Elam Road. There are a couple places you can pull over to hike. The first leads to a lake. We saw evidence of a campfire and primitive shelter there, which may be why a warden, who was friendly, was out patrolling. The second is less well maintained but does have lots of blueberry bushes. If you go when they are in season they would provide a nice snack. There is a sign along the highway for moose but we did not see any, nor any other fauna. Foliage is typical for the eastern woodland region.

The blue trail was well marked. We really enjoyed our hike. It was so peaceful and enjoyable. A great place to have a picnic they have facilities to enjoy a nice picnic.

This free Trustees of Reservations site has an arboretum and trails through woodlands and marshes…read more The wetlands have great flora - including the best spread of water lilies I have ever seen - and evidence of fauna - a giant beaver lodge, trees nibbled by deer, and deer fences and gates as a result. I didn't use the restrooms but the overall park was clean. There is one section with some inclines but overall it's fairly easy hiking.
