I discovered this little mom and son dessert stand just 2 weeks after they'd opened. They're on the other side of the building from a little taco place and after a disappointing experience there I was hoping for a some gastronomic redemption.
They offer bionicos, platanos fritos and slices of a few different cakes. I opted for platanos fritos, fried up right in front of me in a cool open air caldron. It was a little bit of theater with my dessert and that was cool. But I was surprised when I asked the kid, the only fluent English speaker, about the toppings. One tub looked like chopped walnuts. When I asked him about them he said "They're nuts". Yeah, I understand that, what kind of nuts? He stared at me baffled, like he didn't understand the question. I said they looked like walnuts and he responded "Uh... their just nuts". I asked him about the sauces, one looked like condensed milk and the other looked like cream, but he didn't know what they were either. I know he's a kid but shouldn't he have some clue what he's serving?
The platano frito was good but not great. Fried plantains, when they're ripe are very soft and deliciously sweet. This one wasn't quite ripe.
So I'm offering them an aspirational rating. Three starts when they didn't quite earn it. But I'm hopeful that they'll refine what they're doing and the kid will learn a little more about what he's serving and then they'll knock it out o' the park. read more
