These guys removed a beloved but nearly dead hemlock tree. It was a pleasure to deal with this company, both the crew and the office. We received a detailed quote within a day of the initial inspection, along with a reminder that we'd likely need a permit from the city before the work could be done. They arrived at the specified time on the day we booked to have the work done and did a great job, including saving a tree that grew in the shade of the hemlock, and avoiding an awkwardly placed power line. There are two very tall evergreens on one corner of our property - a cedar, and a hemlock. They had grown large long before we bought our house, and one of the trees, the cedar, grew its roots up under a retaining wall, damaging the wall and causing the existing cement block fence to topple over. This was a safety hazard and an eyesore. We contacted three tree service companies for estimates to remove the cedar and prune the hemlock so that it would be safe and stable during windstorms. Only companies accredited by the Better Business Bureau and with a BBB rating of A or higher were contacted. Monkey Tree Services actually provided the most expensive estimate of the three; however, we chose to hire Monkey Tree Services for several reasons: 1. Seth Mennie (the owner) provided the most detailed and thoughtful response to our request for a quote. Even though we asked for the cedar to be removed, he also presented a case for retaining the tree and suggested ways to care for the tree in future, and rebuild the retaining wall and fence around the tree's roots, rather than remove a healthy and mature tree. The other companies we contacted provided estimates for what we specifically requested, but did not demonstrate the same degree of "big picture" thinking and consideration as Monkey Tree Services. 2. Seth communicated effectively in our preferred mode of communication, which was email. We are busy and seldom home, and prefer email because then there is a written record of discussions and agreements. Seth emailed a scanned copy of the estimate, which made it easy to refer to, since we use our computers a lot, both at work and at home. One of the other tree service companies communicated mostly by phone, which meant endless rounds of phone tag. The other company responded initially by email but did not correctly understand the work we requested, then the quote (for the wrong work) was slipped through our mail slot and there was no follow up. We were very satisfied with the work Monkey Tree Services performed: 1. They were quick to get the work done. We had the estimate within two days of the initial request for quote. After considering the suggestions for retaining the cedar, we still decided to remove the cedar and he and his staff carried out the work quickly and efficiently, within the week. 2. Before beginning the work, Seth double-checked to make sure that we (the clients) and his staff had the same understanding of the work to be performed. He explained that tree removal would still leave a bit of stump protruding from the ground, and explained the cost and process for grinding the stump down to below ground level. When we decided to add stump grinding to the work order, he provided an accurate estimate of the additional cost. 3. Site cleanup was effective and tidy. You'd never know a giant cedar tree used to be there. They removed all branches and stump grindings, but left the the pieces from the cedar trunk on our boulevard for the general public to take if they wished. (We were fine with this, as long as the pieces didn't become a permanent fixture on our front lawn). A few days after, Seth followed up with us to ask whether his staff had come back for the rest of the trunk pieces. When I responded that some were left over, he came by the next day to remove the leftovers. From our personal experience with this company we would confidently recommend them as a tree service company for our friends or family to consider hiring. read more

I called and made an appointment in February. Monkey Tree sent over Paul Bunyan and his twin to take care of my unwieldy japanese maple and rhodos. They were fast, efficient, and while the bill seemed high ($495 + tax) for the length of time it took to complete the work (40 mins), the job was fantastic. They also gave me a break on their first quote which was greatly appreciated. I've also since had the opportunity to see the results of friends who went with "low bid" trimmers and I do not regret my decision for a second. I will certainly go back to Monkey Tree. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I have a tree In my backyard and the root kind of grew out of the surface and caused cracking of the concrete surface. So I called and made an appointment with them for inspection on the tree. They gave me a window from 8AM to 1:30PM and did not mention anything like I don't need to show up for inspection. Therefore I expected to be here and see what their solution would be and maybe get the quote. On the date of inspection I've been waiting at home until 2PM and no one showed up. So I called and left a voice message, 2 and half hours later someone called back said they already took a look and about to give me a quote. All they need to do is to trim part of the root, so I asked about the concrete surface, they told me that's not their business, they only trim and dig out the root, despite that it's gonna cause a big mess in my backyard. I totally understood that and i was prepared to find some constructive guy who can fix the surface after their work. The man on the phone was in a really bad talking manner with unpleasantly rude attitude. I am positive sure that he didn't even understand what I meant. He didn't even let me finish my sentence, he interrupted me and said they dont offer construction service and if that's what I need then they deny to do tree service on my property then hang up on me. Through out the entire 3 minutes conversation, I was being polite, all I asked is if they are gonna do something to resurface. If they don't need me to be here for inspection, at least give me a head notice so that I don't need to clear out my schedule for 5 and half hours. Also the man who called back has no manner at all. If this is the way how they do business, I really suggest everyone to truly consider other free services. read more

Monkey Tree Services crew thinned and trimmed our four cedars on June 9, 2017, and later on June 16 for some follow up by request. We're happy to have chosen them to deal with our trees that have overgrown to neighbor's side, and had scary incident of a huge branch fallen onto the pedestrian walkway this past winter. The company enjoyed fairly good online reviews, and we're inclined to use them, being a BBB company. We spoke to over dozens of tree professionals before coming to a decision. Scott, their Certified Arborist, was the only two who correctly pointed out one of our trees could not be removed according to city bylaw. I took the time to go to the City of Vancouver to verify, and found out that the City also used them as well. First day of work was efficient and smooth. Clean up was thorough. Joe and Colin were professional, friendly and helpful. When we needed some more follow-up, the company responded promptly. The staff were understanding and accommodating to first time residential customer like us. I will recommend the company to my friends. In fact, my adjacent neighbor and my mom's friend already obtained their contact regarding tree issues that they or their relatives have.
