Sorry - I would love to give this camp a higher rating, because I love what they do... Girls on the Go takes girls all over town via public transportation and they do a variety of really cool activities. My daughter in particular loved the rock climbing day - and is bugging me to take her back to a rock climbing gym (she who ordinarily shies away from any explicit form of exercise...)
The reason for the low rating is because it seems to my husband and me that the camp is under-staffed (3 counselors for 19 girls), and the staff are not properly trained. Early-on, my daughter experienced some pretty standard "girl drama" for her age group (she is 12, and far from blameless here), which in itself is not a problem. It seemed, however, like the staff had zero idea how to handle it... and weren't particularly committed to making sure the situation was resolved. So it never was.
My daughter came home on day two and talked to us about an incident between her and another girl (one she didn't know before camp). We talked it through - including how she (my daughter) contributed to the problem. She also informed us that the other girl had afterwards taken to pinching, poking, and punching her while the counselors weren't looking.
My husband talked to camp staff about this aspect, and they said they would take care of it. Day 3 and 4 we received similar reports from my daughter that the other girl would not leave her alone physically... my husband AGAIN talked (calmly) to staff, and they proceeded to point out that my daughter was contributing to the problem by being "loud" and telling the other girl to "get away from (her)." Neither of us considered this an appropriate response to our concerns. In the end, this girl continued to harass my daughter the entire week, and whatever the staff did (unclear) was ineffective.
I'm not sure if this is how Girls on the Go handles every situation, but to me it was completely unacceptable that they were not willing or able to make sure that my child was 100% physically safe from the aggressions of other campers. We are not unreasonable people, and we understand that our daughter can annoy other kids, but she is not an instigator or at all physically aggressive. At most, she can be misunderstood by her peers, and that can lead to disputes... but if you're going to run a camp for middle school girls you've got to be able to address those disputes, and you DEFINITELY better be able to shut the physical stuff down. Honestly - that's just not too high a bar to set.
We won't be going back... and it's a shame, because it is a fun camp activity-wise. It's just pretty clear that they don't make sure that staff has the training or experience to handle conflicts of this type. It's surprising, given the age-group of the girls in the camp. In my daughter's case - sadly - it ended up really taking away from what otherwise could have been a great week. read more
