Many of the donated polo ponies are quite a bit posher than I was expecting. They have various things going on depending on the age, commitment, and ability of the rider. The complaints I've read from a few other reviewers seem to come from very entitled and inflexible people. If you want to take lessons, you have to accept that variables may arise. There are perfect days, but there may also be unpleasant weather or some less than great chemistry with a particular horse or person. Next time will probably be different, so stay for the long haul. Success is not necessarily instantaneous. It's expensive because the place and animals are beautiful, but that doesn't mean you deserve handholding or slavish "customer service". The people running this place are helpful but they are not your butlers.

There's an area of picnic tables to eat lunch, but be aware that the friendly cat will greet you and inquire what you're eating. They also have Adirondack chairs to sit near the horses. The ball fields are well maintained but there's a mural from the 80s that is tired and worn and the space as a whole is not used properly. It looks like it was an old basketball court but they only took some parts down. There are several enclosed spaces for hockey practice, tennis and what looks to be a batting cage. These fenced-in areas have been abused as people use them to unleash their dog but do not clean up after them. I would love to see this place utilized better as it is a nice multipurposed area. There's a decent parking lot, too. I like to take my dog over to this area but it does seem isolated and not that well lit. As a young woman walking by myself, it doesn't seem safe with only just two outlets, one behind clubhouse with a bridge and a desolate passageway to Indian Queen. Even during the day, this could be a dangerous spot as the traffic is loud below the bridge and there's not much foot traffic. The other is the long lane out from the parking lot to Scotts Lane. A gate in the right outfield would be helpful but I am sure that's an issue, as there's a train and an intersection right behind there. My concern is: I have been there when there were some J.D.s hanging. Naturally, I was scanning the perimeter for exits and my options were not plentiful. It's kind of a hidden recreational center and would be a safer place if there was more access rather than these two long paths out. Like I said, a great, useful space but where it's positioned geographically and the design is a bit questionable.

Ashford Farm has been my happy place for over 30 years. From my mid-20s to my early 60s, I've…read moreenjoyed every lesson hour at this family-run barn, first with Caroline and now with her daughter Megan Canavan. Caroline's husband, Bill, and daughter, Jane, help with barn operations, feeding and caring for the horses and menagerie of dogs on-site while expertly matching horses with riders of all ages and levels. The barn is beautiful but not fussy. The horses are friendly, well-mannered, and well-loved, and the lessons are safe and fun. My lesson groups have changed as I've aged, but I'm constantly challenged and enthralled with my weekly riding lesson at Ashford Farm.

Cheltenham has high school and property tax rates. Although I was well past school age when we moved here the schools consistently get good reviews in the various reviews. The snow gets cleared, we have good volunteer fire services and the cops are decent - I even got off for a flagrant violation once I think in equal parts due to my sparse gray hair and my address in Cheltenham. Since then I've been good on the roads! Something else our high taxes buy is is a wonderful library system (3 or 4 I believe) and great parks and recreation. We live between the two pools here - Conklin and the Glenside pool. The Conklin pool is bigger and has it's own parking as well as an on site ice cream truck that the woman who ran the snack bar have upgraded to for 2014. They also have pizza and other foods as well as sweets. The best part of Conklin is the cool crystal clear water. Loads of it! Nice steps so when one feels like slow immersion that's an option. Twin diving boards and deeper sections for those occasions when rapid cooling is imperative. Skilled life guards who jump into action fast - even if a guy horsing around with his companions says 'help' they leap into action rather then waiting to assess the situation from the deck. Sometimes nostalgic, sometimes annoying calls of marco ... polo and a range of races and ages that spans the globe joining you in the pool, moms drying tots with huge towels and teens on towels up hill 'sunbathing' If you live in Cheltenham it's not too costly to get in and if you don't live here well, we're a friendly bunch in Cheltenaham so make a new friend. BTW, nothing wrong with the Glenside pool - i's just smaller and harder to park at - if you have kids Glenside has nice slides to enjoy. Both pools are adjacent to playgrounds and picnic areas with grills.

Conklin Pool is one of two pools operated by Cheltenham Township, the other being the Glenside…read morePool. Pool memberships are available only to township residents, although non-residents may use the pool as the guest of a resident. Compared to the Glenside Pool, Conklin has bigger grounds, and a private parking lot, where Glenside has only on-street parking. The atmosphere at the pool is relatively mellow and family-oriented. Although there are many kids, most are there with their parents, so they aren't too obnoxious. The lifeguards call Adult Swim for 15 minutes once an hour in the main pool, which I've never seen at the Glenside Pool. One thing that bothered me was that at the baby pool I watched two different lifeguards letting themselves get very distracted for extended periods of time. If you see this, I encourage you to mention it to a supervisor, because it is really too important to shrug off.

This park has some nice trails crisscrossing Walnut Lane, and a huge baseball/softball field for use outside of the winter months. There's also a massive sled hill here-- honestly probably the best one in the Philadelphia area that I've seen as a transplant, but I'm sure a longer term local could verify that for sure. Only knock is that parking is a bit wanting. Ended up parking on the streets around the neighborhood, but it would have been nice to open up the parking in the park for guests, but it seems to be taken up by a lot of rangers' vehicles. Not sure what business they have in here, but they sure are taking up a lot of the space!

In the middle of a pandemic while it's cold out, this place is completely empty, but on days when the weather is nice there are a ton of parents with their kids and school classes that stop by. Honestly for a playground, this place has everything you could ever want. Baby and big kid swings, 3 climbing structures, benches and tables to sit down and have snack and even a sprinkler for summer time. Even though the rec center is a 15 min walk for us, it is by far the best playground around. What's my favorite part you ask? The gate. When you have a toddler who loves to hide and run away, your best friend is a gate that will keep your kid safe. Most of the playgrounds in the area are totally open with no area for a kid to run to their heart's content without fear that they will run right into the street. Not this park! Completely surrounded by a tall gate on all side. Total win for me!

There's a patch of grass that's large enough to be a mini park but yet it's completely fenced in and locked? FOR WHAT REASON. They never open it up so it's useless. Even when I asked them what was it for and if they could open it they said no. Nice to know my tax dollars are being put to use to maintain a useless lawn. PLUS the staff is rude as all hell. why work at a recreational center that's supposed to bring joy if you're a miserable prick.

Recently went to a wedding here. The venue and grounds are beautiful and in an old mansion with an…read moreattached outside tented area. The wedding ceremony complete with folding chairs very close together was in an open area just beyond the tented area. Luckily the ceremony was early enough before dusk to keep the bugs at bay. The reception in the tented area was spacious with a great layout. After dinner we were ushered to the dance floor inside the estate. It was an awkwardly small room which connected to another small room with one side exiting onto a patio through large windows which were hard to navigate in heels. Two bathrooms were in an out building off the tented area with unlit paths and uneven steps. Just some observations. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Catering service was good.

After a random stop here on the way back to Philly from Jenkintown, I'm still a little puzzled…read moreabout Tookany Creek. Part of it was very nice and well maintained, and another part was deserted and boarded up--literally. There were bridges that were blocked but didn't have any signs not to use them, and they were sound enough to us to use... so of course we hopped over the baracades, haha. There also happens to be an above-ground large black-colored gas pipeline running through the span of the park. So much for enjoying nature. Regardless, if I lived in the area I would definitely use this as a running trial!
