Cordovan Art School & Pottery Parlor - Mother's Day mug

My husband and I had such a great experience painting some dinner plates here. The prices are…read morereasonable and less than other nearby painting places. All of the staff we encountered the day we painted and the day we picked up were so kind and encouraging.

Went here for pottery painting. The night before I looked up on their website to check if they…read moreaccepted walk-ins b/c when searching up on Google their name was listed as only "Cordovan Art School" (no pottery parlor). The website stated in bold letters "walk-ins always welcome". However, when I got to the store they had a sign posted on the door saying walk-ins were only allowed from 4:30 to 7:00. This was listed nowhere on the website. Quite inconvenient. As far as paint quality goes, pretty decent. They had a variety of brushes and tools for painting and they gave visuals of how each color bakes with 1, 2, and 3 coats so you have a good idea of how your piece will turn out. I was very disappointed with the finished product after glazing though. There were speckles of colors that I did not have anywhere in my piece and smudges (maybe from overcrowding the kiln? Not sure). Also, I believe they did not correctly glaze my piece as there appeared to be milky drips baked onto my piece that I assume to be extra glaze that dripped down and baked when firing. Quite disheartening as I took the entire 4:30-7:00 time to paint my piece and make it perfect only for it to be messed up during the firing process. The staff were fairly nice except for who I assume to be the owner. The day I went to paint with friends (unaware of the time rule because it wasn't on the website) we arrived at 3:30. The front of the store which featured tables, paint, and pottery pieces was completely empty. So, my friend decided just to ask if we could paint earlier since it was not too far from the walk-in hours (if not, no harm done. Just worth a shot to ask). The owner sharply responded with "No. Absolutely not." with some other explanations about camp. We were totally fine with being told no (again no harm done just worth a shot), but a nicer tone would have been appreciated. Another rude interaction was when I went to pick up my piece. My mother decided to come with me as she had been wanting to paint pottery and wanted to check out the studio. When the owner was asked about their opening hours by my mother (who is hard of sight and who did not get a chance to read the door since I opened it for her), she responded "It's on the door." (referring to the sign posted on printer paper) in a harsh, belittling tone. While I do get it can be frustrating to be asked a question when you have a sign, it does not take much effort to simply answer when asked. She also explained how the new hours were because the children were in camp and how pottery painters were not the priority (although pottery parlor is half of their name so a little misleading). Overall, not a great experience. Don't think I would revisit.

My children (ages 9 and 7) have attended art camp here and they absolutely loved it!!! We also had…read moremy daughter's 7th birthday party at their Cypress location (the cute blue building off Kluge right by Kluge Tennis Ranch) and the kids had such a good time. They were well organized and everything went very smoothly! Each child left the party with a cute painting that was totally display worthy. I highly recommend this studio for birthday parties and their camps. They pay close attention to the Cy Fair calendar and have camps set up for every single holiday. It was a life saver when the kids were bored over thanksgiving break. Love this place!

The Artist Within is an excellent place to take your child for art instruction. Mr. Tom, the owner…read moreand main instructor, is very talented, not just at painting and drawing, but also at passing on tips and techniques to his students. Children and adults, whether they feel like they are artistically talented or not, will come away with quality, unique artwork that they created and a greater understanding of how to continue to draw and paint on their own. I have taken two of my children to The Artist Within over the years, both at the old location and new one for camps and their homeschool art class. My eldest, who has always been able to sit and draw on her own for hours, walked in when she was very young and without even knowing what the business was for said "Oh! I really like it here!" even though she usually did not like any place but home. My younger daughter who is constantly moving and very active loves it too, it helps her focus and learn. Even living an hour away, we came back for a course this last semester. Both girls came away with more confidence, technique, and several fantastic pieces of art. The new location is well suited to creative expression with a beautiful, fairy-land style garden in the back where, during longer classes or camps, the instructor allows the class to stretch their legs and minds on a short break. I highly recommend the Artist Within to anyone who wants more than the quick "paint what we're teaching" style place.

Honestly, not the biggest fan. My children have been to…read moreother gymnastics and dance studios but this one did not impress me by one bit. Gym time isn't that bad probably the only consistent activity where coaches need to be more hands on but give the children so much freedom to run loosely with little direction, yes it's supposed to be fun but I feel like they are missing on one key elemental skill which is coaching verbally in order to maintain order as much as a coach can. The staff loves to be on their phones, yes all the staff (at least when we went) were young teen ladies but what kind of example is that on the young? Oh it's totally ok to be on phones as you are being instructed? ....I think not. What teen doesn't want to go out on Friday nights but once employees commit to a job, it is their responsibility to take on the duties that are expected. Lastly, the dance class. Never in my life have I had my two other children attend a dance class directed by a TV screen, almost identical to little Julian from Big Daddy when he was hopping around while watching the Kangaroo sing-a-long. Dance instructors typically (from my previous experiences) have all children in a pattern, either by the bar or in a circle to see the children's body movements as they are being taught the basics of dance. This would be a lot different if the studio class was dealing with toddlers or young children but when children are at the age to comprehend and act upon the instruction. I am no dance instructor but experiencing dance at different age groups from both my other children and from the little that I remember, children are missing out on such a wonderful experience even if they are not part of the dance team. Perhaps even challenging themselves or simply just practice stretching exercises, parents here are being robbed on what could be a great hobby for these kids to possibly pursue as they get older. Luckily, for us we are no longer members of this gym and dance studio. We are actively looking for something along the lines of my older two have experienced since our youngest child seems to really enjoy gymnastics and dance.

We brought two of our children (twin girls) here for Break-Away Camp. Our daughters mentioned to…read moreone of the counselors that the following day was their sixth birthday, and their party had been canceled due to coronavirus concerns. These kind souls (the counselors) went to the trouble of throwing a little party for our daughters, with cake and tiaras (which our daughters love) that light up and say "Happy Birthday." Such an act of thoughtfulness deserves nothing short of a top-notch rating.
