Wow what a selection! I came in looking for a chocolate stout beer. And I found more than I bargained for. They do have some pretty high priced items, but I'm going to assume they are worth it. Now I'm no beer drinker. But if you are this place is a must stop if you're looking for something special. The family who ownthe store are very nice and helpful. Not easily found nowadays. We've been back many times since I wrote this review (we end up here at least once a week) and I just love this place more and more each time. They still come through with the best selections of limited release craft beers (PLINY!) and they know their beers and will happily give recommendations. The owners always remember us when we stop in and even go so far as to ask how we enjoyed the specific beers they remember us purchasing our last time in. The selection of new beers every time we go in makes it a fun adventure and sort of like Christmas year-round. 02/18/2013 UPDATE: Helix Liquor is expanding its craft beer even further by adding another aisle of craft beer selections. Helix is the place to be. El Cajon isn't really a hotspot for craft beers but these guys take the cake. The owners really stepped their craft game up. I've found the most random beers from all over the world. The selection is nice but what really makes this place is the family vibe. As a customer, I don't like going to the same place over and over and having zero interaction. If I didn't want to talk to anyone I would go to the 7-11 across the street but f that! I come here because these guys are very chill and they know their ish. Not every night is a beer night though, and me being the alcoholic that I am, I also appreciate the wide variety of spirits available (spirits is just a fancy word for liquor...use that to look smart). Helix Liquor is a diamond in the rough that is El Cajon's craft beer scene. Any time I've been in, John has been there to point out the newest brews he has in stock (and I should emphasize that there are new brews EVERY TIME). If you aren't sure what to grab, just ask him for a recommendation and rest assured he won't let you down. I've stopped by looking for something in particular before, and on the off chance it was out or wasn't carried, he made an effort to bring the bottle in for me. It is that extra effort that you don't see from a place like BevMo or even other stores in the East County. But what should definitely be applauded is that on a recent trip in there, while I was perusing the awesome selection of bombers in the cooler, it seemed that everyone that walked in was called by their name. How John remembers every name and face, I do not know. But how he does it doesn't really matter, it's the fact that he does it, that is so awesome and appreciated. I have been going to Helix Liquor for the last 10 years and they always have what I am looking for. I have recently been trying various Whiskeys and their selection is outstanding. They are one of the few liquor stores in town that constantly have my two favorite whiskeys in stock; Eagle Rare and Blanton's Whiskey. So I walked in here one day cuz the big banner out front that said variety of craft beer sold here. I wasn't expecting much, but this place by far has the BIGGEST selection of craft and import beer I've seen in el cajon. Had specialty stone reunation 10 yr anniv, Yule smith anniv, Belgian brew thru the roof, lots of imports, and all of the domestics. I was shocked, it was like a lil beer heaven. Straight up the best place for Craft Beers in El Cajon. Unreal selection! John is an expert that can educate you on beer. He is a real cool guy too. Its no wonder all the breweries hook him up with picks before they hit the market. He really can elevate anyone's experience when it comes to buying craft beers. Heck he makes me feel like I am an expert every time I leave there. I even started sounding like one, especially when I bring out his picks for my guests or if I bring them over to a friends house I got invited to. People started calling me now as if I am the expert, little do they know its all Helix Liqour. I swear if I didn't know any better he has his cicerone certification in beer. He is "master cicerone" I know I gave a shout out about their Craft Beers, but they have a great selection on wines and liquor too. Ask him about the Ninety-Nines (99s). I think everyone in San Diego gets them from him. He has every flavor you can think of. If you don't know what these are, next time you have a gathering or a party grab a few sleeves. Your friends will say they had a blast! I can't forget to mention John's Mom that works there too, she is such a sweet heart. I live in PB, and after reading reviews of here, I had to take a trip. I ended up going Friday, Saturday and then again on Monday, each time walking away with quality beers you just don't see anywhere else. My wallet is a lot lighter now, but it was definitely worth it. Margaret (I hope I'm getting her name correct because I'm horrible with names) was awesome to me and told me I need to come by and meet her son when he's there.
