02/05/2020 I live literally a block away and was too lazy to drive to Santa Monica Blvd, so decided to come here and to give them another chance. This time I was happier with the service but the final result is lacking, my gel manicure chipped off after only 5 days. Gel manicure supposed to last for 2-3 weeks. I walked in without an appointment and they were not busy at all so I didn't have to wait. I got pink gel manicure for $30, which is very reasonable. Any other nail salon in the area will charge you between $35 to $45 for gel manicure. Unfortunately, again I noticed their sanitary conditions. The lady who did my nails didn't wear any gloves and didn't wash her hands before taking care of me. The work surface on the manicure table was dirty, I wonder how often they clean it. Changing your nail color without shaping/filling is way cheaper; $8 for hands $10 for feet And just $20 to change your gel color. Again, that's not includes shaping and filling your nails. read more

Don't lie to me - if you don't have time, say you don't have time. Don't make me wait and then do a sloppy job. $31 for a regular mani/pedi is outrageous! Not to mention the lady kept jumping back and forth between other clients and answering the phone while doIng my mani. First and last time here. If they were honest and said they didn't have time for a walk in, I would have been much happier. Instead time was wasted and I have a crappy mani/pedi that I'll have to get redone. 2 star because the girl who did the pedi was trying to go fast and do a good job while her boss was rushing everyone. Not a relaxing experience. read more

So I went to go get a mani pedi 3 months ago and the lady giving me a pedi cut my right side of toe nail saying I had an ingrown nail, but yet I didn't feel like it was ingrown, she cut it out and it grew back worse so I hadn't gone for a couple months. I was in a rush to get my nails done again and found it convenient for me to go to their nail salon again and same thing happened on left toe now which it wasn't ingrown or anything and now its been 3 days and I'm seeing it's swollen like the other one. I just got surgery on toe to fix what she did. I highly suggest no one goes here for pedis. If I was you I would definitely not come here for a pedi. read more

(This is a very late post.) I wanted to try this place out since it's a block away from work. I made an appointment and the process was smooth, the lady on the phone was easy to talk to. I parked in a lot behind the salon across the street from Vons and was seated right away since I made an appointment. I could tell who the lady was I talked to on the phone, as she was the one constantly answering the phone. I saw maybe 2-3 regulars and it looked like they were with their designated manicurists and it eased my mind that people came here regularly, assuming they did a great job. I came to get a gel manicure and regular pedicure. I wanted black matte for my nails. The manicurist I got was nice, but I could tell she didn't know what matte meant. The other ladies told her what it was and what to do. My pedicure was regular, and she did good with my toes. My gel manicure didn't come out nice. If you've gotten a gel manicure before, you'd definitely know what a bad job looks like. It was too thick and my nails look deformed. On top of that, no pun intended, she didn't put enough of the top coat to make it matte. (I didn't get to take pictures.) In the end, my deformed looking nails came out a regular shiny black and started chipping my nails. Since I didn't have cash for tip, I was told to take cash out and the lady in charge was extremely apologetic when I told her I'd walk to Vons to take cash out. I left her my driver's license so she'd know I'd come back. I honestly didn't mind doing this and this isn't why I'm only giving them 2 stars. I added an extra star because they do have good customer service. It's just that I do get my nails done often, and they didn't come out nice at all. The price is typical of all nail salons these days (around $70), but I definitely didn't think it was worth my money. read more

I go here every 2 weeks. I used to do my own nails. I was too embarrassed to go to the salon, because my nails were broken and would split constantly. That was until I heard about gel nails being the new craze. A couple of people even told me how gel made their nails stronger. But then there were the horror stories about get completely ruining ones nails and being an utter pain in the booty to take off. Well I plaid Russian roulette and decided to try it. Let me tell you, my nails for the first time in my life grow. They went from being short and ugly and splitting and looking like I have been gardening for my whole life to growing so damn fast I look like I have a nice set of Freddy Kruger claws. This place is mighty convenient because it's even walking distance from my house, and I hate parking my car so I just walk it. I love gel so much I even do it on my toes which lasts forever! Professional gas lighters!!! Stay away Got the pedicure + callus removal for $25 + tip at this place for many(!) times in previous couple of months. Today I was told they have NEVER done it for this price even after I showed the manager the transactions in my app. She even didn't recognize me. Hahaha, ok, good job. They wanted to charge me 40% extra for the same damn job out of blue. So basically I just got my feet washed and nail polish removed for this money. Hello, I can do it myself, guys! Stay away if you are looking for a clean & reasonable place to get your nails done. My first & LAST visit here. They quoted $27 for a pedicure. They wanted an extra $9 to do any foot care. I explained before I sat down that I was only interested in nails clipped, cuticles & usual foot care. I explained I would skip the polish for the time to be spent on doing a good job on basics. Both ladies nodded enthusiastically in agreement. The woman cut my nails way too short - they hurt (just like one of the reviews above)! When she started to towel dry my feet after clipping, she mumbled something I couldn't understand. Good thing I asked her to repeat. That's when I was told it would be $9 extra for any of the usual skin smoothing. I didn't need or ask for callous removal. Mani & Pedi is $40 here and you will feel gross just sitting in the filthy chairs. Don't waste your time and money. Place was completely empty on a Friday afternoon. Now I know why. read more

This is a gem in Santa Monica. In the midst of this pandemic I needed a nail salon to be open. I honestly don't know what these bad reviews are about all I can think off is high maintenance customers. Anyways, they are so sweet and friendly. They do anything to make sure that you are happy with your mani. They are following all cdc guidelines and enforcing a mask even though they do everything outside, love it!!!! This will not be my first time especially since I work in Santa Monica during my lunch hour you can find me here relaxing and getting taken care of. read more

Do NOT go here if you want to get your nails done. Find a place on Main Street. I believe all the good comments are FAKE! I randomly decided to try this place. DO NOT COME HERE!!! An old lady wearing a pair of Presbyopic glasses did my jel. She didn't even let me chose the color when I told her I want grey. The whole process took about 15 minutes! That is the fastest nail I have ever done. You can imagine how bad are they! They don't have a good nail standard!!! Both me and my friend got tons of bubbles on all fingers. And the old lady who did my nails couldn't even can see!!! That is so funny. So I have to ask other artists. They were like: yeah there are some bubbles , but it is just bubbles! It's normal.... I asked the lady took off my nail immediately and went to my old artist immediately on Main Street. Overall, Come to this place if you want BUBBLE nails. I've found it very difficult to find a good place to get a pedicure on the west side and Modern Nails was no different. After waiting briefly for a pedicure chair to become available, I was able to soak my feet for a short time before the pedicure began. The job was cursory at best. She barely scrubbed my heels and the she tried to up-charge me for a special heel treatment, which I declined. When I requested that she spend a little more time on my heels, she refused at first, suggesting the special treatment again but when I declined again, she reluctantly scrubbed them for a few more seconds. The polishing wasn't any better. It was uneven and she missed a few places on the nails. When it was time to pay, I handed her my credit card and she requested cash. She then informed me that they charge $1 extra for credit cards... Well, that pedicure definitely wasn't worth $17 + $1. Previous reviewers have mentioned that Nghi is excellent so I may try this place again if I can manage to make an appointment with him. Otherwise, the search continues. read more

I came here because I was badly in need of a pedicure, I needed to kill time before an event nearby, and I read fellow Yelper Jessica S's review and decided to make an appt. I was really concerned about pricing because a lot of nail salons charge more for pedicures but this place only charges $17.00 which is a steal! I walked in and the place is more narrow but still has a lot of room. It's by no means a flashy place but it's decorated tastefully, no tacky eighties paintings. They have a really large and good quality selection of polishes! The woman who worked on me seemed to be in a hurry as I've never had a faster pedicure but she didn't shape the nails evenly, they still look messy. Also, it looks like she didn't fully get rid of my cuticles. :( The technician also kept asking if I wanted additional services, I find that irritating but I understand that's how they make more money. Still tho. They charge a dollar fee for credit cards so bring cash. I don't know if I'd come back if I was in the area. It wasn't as thorough as I'm used to. read more

I went for gel nails. Although they are cheaper than other places i would not recommend. The lady was rough with filling and cut my skin twice as the nail file was very rough (which caused bleeding). The instruments where not clean and did not came out of a sealed package. After that, I returned twice in the following 5 days because the gel.polish was lifting off 3 nails. They where not happy that i returned and did a quick repair without taking much care. Although cheaper...its not worth it read more

I asked if they could accommodate me to get hands and feet done same time before work. I had 1.5 hours. They said yes. I went in and they kept tricking me saying oh don't worry the nail tech is coming coming coming. Only ended up doing my feet and ended up late to work with my hands a mess. The receptionist, Sasha, also ignored the technician I booked online and assigned me to someone else without any explanation. This has happened more than once. Her customer service is rude, and appointments don't seem to matter. On top of that, they charged me an extra $2 for using a credit card without telling me beforehand, and they don't even accept Apple Pay. It's not about the $2--it's about being transparent with customers. Between the poor-quality polish, charging for repairs after only a few days, the unprofessional front desk, and the hidden credit card fee, I won't be coming back or recommending this salon

The space is gorgeous--elevated but not intimidating, which is a hard balance--and the whole vibe is warm and unfussy, which I personally love. Naz did my nails (my first Russian manicure) and was truly fantastic! She was precise, thoughtful, and made the whole thing feel easy. After years of being a loyal client, I expected better quality and better customer service. Rest assured, the $20 credit can remain on my account, I will not be returning.

Mindy does beautiful, consistent gel fills with great attention to shape and detail. My manicures have lasted about three weeks, and the soft almond shape is exactly what I asked for. I bring my own OPI Bubble Bath and Funny Bunny polishes, and she's happy to use them. She listened carefully to my preferences, respected that I don't have my cuticles cut, and was extremely thorough. She checked every finger and carefully trimmed the small hangnails that needed attention, which I really appreciated. The owner was also pleasant during this visit, and overall the experience felt much more positive. My nails look elegant, natural, and beautifully finished. I explained to the gentleman who answered the phone that I have ingrown toenails that require someone with experience and the proper technique to maintain them so they don't become painful. Without hesitation, he told me that **Wendy** was the best person for the job and scheduled me with her at 6:00 PM. When I arrived, another technician was ready to begin my pedicure. I explained that I had an appointment with Wendy. I was then told that Wendy wasn't available, yet they still expected me to proceed with someone else. That wasn't what I had specifically called ahead to arrange. I got up and went to the front desk, where I was met by a woman who appeared visibly annoyed. Rather than communicating with me, she relied almost entirely on gestures and handed me her cell phone to speak with the owner. The voice on the phone sounded like the same gentleman I had spoken to when I made my appointment. During that conversation, I was suddenly told that no one named Wendy works there and that I must have meant Mindy. I had already seen the technician wearing a name tag that said "Mindy," so I knew who they were referring to. After waiting a few minutes, another employee told me, "Mindy is ready for you." At that point, I noticed that the same technician I had previously seen wearing a "Mindy" name tag was now wearing a different name tag. This salon is in a prime location and serves a discerning clientele. Customers deserve honesty, respect, and clear communication. Instead, I felt like I was being misled and treated as though I wouldn't notice what was happening. I chose to walk out. I hope the owners take a hard look at how their business is being run and how customers are treated.

I don't respect non transparent pricing practices, in which they engage. If you tell a customer the price is one thing, it should be that price. And if there are any differences in that pricing model, you should be able to explain it, clearly . Repeating over and over a number that your own register doesn't agree with is not great customer service. My nails were nice, but pay at your own risk.

I noticed he would lean in closer to her occasionally, but I didn't realize that that was when he was saying these really inappropriate things to her. I wish I knew so I could have gotten her out of there sooner. Notice how Patrick never denied harassing my friend in his super professional response. On top of everything, the set she got was ugly and poor quality, just like mine (see pics). Ladies, be so careful around that nail tech. He is not one of the girls. It's even more alarming that he's the owner. I can only imagine how he conducts himself with his all female staff in the off hours. Edit: Patrick, please don't lie about this. I was there. The nail technicians at this salon have mastered it! No heat burns from harsh drilling or cuts on the cuticles from misestimating dry skin from live skin. Irena provides a detailed and meticulous cuticle cleaning that lasts a very long time. That is why I love this place. Versus the way my cuticles start growing back like weeds in just 3 days of receiving a typical wet manicure at other places. I've even noticed a significant difference between the dry pedicure and the wet pedicure. The soles of my feet are softer longer. The salon even carries Vegan nail polish from my favorite brand, "The Manicurist" This is my favorite nail salon by far! Irena makes my natural nails look so good and healthy everytime. I love it!
