This place is great, I went to all the expensive "fancy" barber shops in the area before finding this place I wasted to much on other barber shops, expecting better results. This is a true classic New York barber shop, the walls are covered in old photos and all the guys are awesome. Getting a haircut in this place is like a cut scene outta an old movie. The conversation is great these guys are real classic New Yorkers, it's great to see. Reminds me of the barber shop I went to as a child. I always get my haircut by Steven, gives me a great fade and beard trim every time never disappointed and for a fair price. To many Barbers now are obsessed with all this dumb stuff you see online and haircuts end up taking an hour not here, this places gets you in and out without Sacrificing quality. Came here after a recommendation from a friend, and I was not disappointed. When I head "Barber Shop," I think of stodgy old men swapping war stories while one of them gets a trim that matches the poster of haircuts from 1956. This is not that place. The barbers still swap stories and chat while cutting your hair, but they do a really good job. I came for a trim, and left with a really good haircut. Price is good, too. Ok I know the name says modern, however I am pretty sure this shop is as old as time, but that's not a negative. Arthur and the guys in there can actually cut and can knock out a seamless bald fade in a timely manner. If you're in Astoria, you're sleeping by not coming here. read more

I have a bad habit of letting my hair grow well after it should have been cut. Sure, I revel in the paradox of looking like a hippie when I'm actually a capitalist foot soldier, but the motivation is really a fear of the BAD HAIRCUT. And I don't much like the whole process, anyway. Since I moved to New York, I've gotten most of my haircuts at Astor Hair - the arena of barbers that'll process you as soon as you arrive and have you out in ten minutes flat. Of course, the price of this convenience was a string of hit-or-miss haircuts. Because of this uncertainty, I tended to procrastinate any time I needed a haircut. Well, today, I think I found my new barber. I dropped into Modern Barber Shop (right under the N at Broadway) to see if I could find a better solution than Astor Hair. I waited for about five minutes, then sat in Nick's chair. I gave my instructions, and felt pretty confident that he understood them. He even asked for clarification on one or two points. Throughout the process, he made pleasant banter with me and the other patrons and staff. This is clearly a very friendly joint. And, more importantly, I could tell he wasn't completely scissor-happy, which helped me relax. When it was all over, he reiterated what I asked for, and showed that he'd delivered, complete with the hot shave touch ups. I was happy with the service and the results. And the price ($10 before tip) was not bad at all. read more

I think these guys do good job, but they seem to do with non-asian head (don't question, that's what my friends all said after my haircut) So I went there a few times in the past, each time different guy cut my hair. I like all of them, funny, usual berbar talk, had fun. As far as the skill concerned, they are good, but make sure you know what you are getting for $12. And I've seen a few guys there getting haircut, they all looked good, I thought mine look good, but then after I left all my friends said "dude, what happen to your hair?" I've changed to other location, but I still think these guys can deliver. read more

There's a short way and a long way to review Modern Barber. The short way is that I brought my son here for his first haircut and I've been taking him back ever since. He's 8 1/2 now and he looks forward to coming here as much as he likely realizes that I'm forcing him to come here because Dad enjoys getting is hair did here, too. NO SPOILERS, but you will enjoy this barber shop more than attending any summer blockbuster @ #UAkaufman or any meal on Astoria's Broadway. I've been going to the barbershop for over 15 years now, and, I don't see myself going anywhere else anytime soon. The good thing is that since all of the barbers there give the same, high-quality haircut, there's no need to wait for any barber in particular, so your wait time is always short, relative to other shops. Comfortable, clean and fun is my experience each time. The two owners are real smart asses, which always makes the time go by better. Finding a good barber is more difficult than you know..ive been to barbers who know how to cut with scissors but cant do a fade or vice versa..these guys (in particular Arthur and Nick) can do everything and blend in the fades nice....super friendly staff and i enjoy talking to them. The old guy.... Jesus H Christ... he destroyed my hair. I've been here several times, and the younger guys (the brothers) always did a good job. But when I went and got the old guy.... What a nightmare. I got home and noticed all different lengths on the top of my head. Literally, one clump of hair was an inch and a half, one was 4 inches. When I spiked my hair like I always do, I looked ridiculous. I tried to fix it myself to no avail. NEVER AGAIN. If you go here, AVOID THE OLD MAN! The 2 brothers know what they're doing... These guys do a decent job at cutting hair, and they charge a very reasonable amount for a standard haircut ($12). I recommend Benny (the old gentleman), and always go out of my way to make sure that he cuts my hair. (Once I find a barber that I like, I always stick with them and put my trust in them). They are friendly and love talking with their customers. They use a really old-school straight edge razor and hot foam shaving cream to trim the back of your neck, and have nicked me almost every time I go, so that's why I'm docking one star. All in all, a great bargain for what you get. read more

I just recently started to grow my hair back so I went to this place. The first time I went the guy was friendly and did a decent job. Not the greatest, but decent. I just came back from my second time with the same barber and my hair is completely crooked. Feeling around my hair I notice the hair on the lower right side felt a little longer then the left, thinking it might just be me I looked into a mirror and checked it out, lo and behold, it was! I got a faux hawk type cut and the top left of my hair is also longer then my top right. Clearly, I am VERY unhappy with the haircut. I cant say the same for the rest of the barbers but stay clear of an elderly barber with a full, white, head of hair and glasses. After this, I will obviously be looking for another barber. read more

An ex girlfriend made me get a 50 dollar haircut at some salon and it was actually a lame version of what I get here for 12 bucks or so. Everyone's nice and they remember your face by the second time you come in. I have a lot of anxiety about these neighborhood barber shops because most are are hit or miss (one I went to just wanted me to point at a picture on the wall), but this place is top shelf. read more

The customer service is amazing, the haircuts are amazing, the price is right, and they get you in and out. Having moved to Manhattan, I am still coming back to Queens for my haircuts, and have not been anywhere in over ten years. I bring my family and friends and recommend it to everyone. Frankly, I'm surprised by some of the poor reviews and having come here for so long, I frankly don't believe things were as bad as they are reporting. AVOID the old short man with glasses!! I am very laid back and this was so bad i created a yelp account to say this guy sucked! He kept stopping to watch TV or to look at other people waiting. He never touched my sideburns and when i asked for a little shorter he just got grumpy and starting cutting the top of my head really fast but not doing the back so my hair is all different lengths on top. I noticed all of this but was thinking its all in my head i am sure its fine then i showed a friend she confirmed it and said i had to get it cut again. I really needed a shape-up, so on my way to work I stopped in, planning to get one only if there was no wait. It looked like all the barbers were occupied, so I mentioned that I couldn't wait around and would come back another time. I didn't realize the older gentleman sanding to the side was a barber, but another barber sure let me know (by barking at me with wide eyes, causing customers and other barbers to laugh). They lost a customer today. I will not go to an establishment that treats customers disrespectfully. read more

I have been going to this place for more than 10 years. Nick knows his stuff and is always on point. He is so good, that my first son had a horrible experience at a Fun Kiddie haircut place (For his first cut) he cried so bad, that it seemed like they were cutting his scalp..... fast forward to Modern Barber Shop, the next cut, he was quiet and smiling, no problems, Nick took care of him, not a kid shop, but they can cut kids well. I just took my second son there and again a stellar job. Going to see them now... Highly recommended and I moved out of Astoria 7 years ago, still take the ride, its worth the trip!! read more

First time here since I was visiting friends in NYC. If anybody knows the first time you go to a new barber shop you never know what's going to happen. Meaning if you see only one person waiting doesn't mean you're next after that person. With appointments and people you been going for ages just dropping in or if they just booked all day. You never know until you walk in. So I was prepared to wait a bit. Lucky for me only two people were before me. Asked for a cut and a shave. I inform the barber what clip size I usually get and he took care of the rest. I was very happy with the cut and the shave was amazing. He took the time to go thur all steps. If anybody has gotten a straight razor shave you know what I'm talking about. So I left a happy customer with the service and on top of that the two barbers there were friendly and treat me like a regular even if it was my first time there. read more

This is the worst haircut I've gotten. If you go to this place, avoid the old dude at all costs. My hair is abysmally blended, random lengths in random places, and it pretty much just looks horrible. I went to Diva Hair Salon to see if I could get it fixed and the lady laughed at my whack job and told me to come back at 8:00. Terrible. read more
