When I first walked into Modaks, it immediately reminded me of wellington. Must be the slightly different, ~cool~ vibe that this place has, I'm not too sure, but I quite liked it. Think indie-but-not-too-indie music in the background, mismatched furniture, shabby chic and random art on the walls.
So, food. As far as I know, most people come here for the famous fries or wedges: they are indeed delicious (both are spicy and cooked well) and the portions are huge. No, I mean GINORMOUS. I've shared wedges with a friend and we barely finished them; I came in extremely hungry thinking that I might be able to finish the chips on my own, and, you guessed it, I failed miserably. Both come with a choice of two sauces (you can choose from sour cream, sweet chili, aioli etc etc). I chose aioli both times (I believe they make it in-house?) and did not regret it: it is possibly one of the best versions of the humble sauce I have ever tasted. Yes, you can probably tell by now that I am an aioli freak.
I also had one of their famous milkshakes. The portion trend obviously continued there as well as the milkshake was served in a, I kid you not, one litre jar, although the milkshake itself was a little disappointing. It was very liquidy and reminded me more of flavoured milk rather than a true milkshake. Modaks wizards, take notice and add a little bit more ice cream to your shakes!
The baking from the cabinet was alright, lots of choices for vegans so that's quite good I suppose.
Overall, a nice spot for getting together with your slightly more alternative friends (or anyone who likes load of deep-fried potato drenched in delicious aioli, hehe). read more
