I originally found Darryl Hale on Yelp and had him prepare our taxes the last couple of years…read morewithout issue. This year Darryl reached out directly offering tax planning services. After paying the $2,500 assessment fee Darryl recommended two tax strategies, both of which raised significant concerns: 1) GFX Trading - a complex Series LLC foreign currency structure. This strategy was presented as a way to generate large tax deductions through foreign currency trading. When I asked for written explanations of how the strategy worked, what the economic substance was, and how it would hold up under IRS scrutiny, the answers were incomplete and at times inaccurate. When I declined to proceed, he called me immediately, insisting "everyone is doing this," and became defensive. I later understood that his affiliated company receives commissions from this arrangement, which was not disclosed before he recommended it. 2) DNA Harmony - involving the purchase of gift certificates for Jazz Band Splash red-light therapy. This was presented as a deductible expense through a separate Series LLC structure. Again, I requested information in writing about the IRS basis for deducting these types of purchases, but the responses did not address compliance, valuation, or audit exposure. When I decided not to move forward with either strategy based on the lack of clear documentation and concerns about risk, I requested a refund of my $2,500 fee. The request was denied. My experience did not meet the level of professionalism I expect from a tax advisor. I would not return nor recommend Darryl Hale and will be filing a complaint with the IRS Office of Professional Responsibility and notifying the California Franchise Tax Board.

I've used this firm for three years and the 2025 cycle has been a mess. I uploaded my business…read moredocuments in February and paid the invoice the same week. The draft came back with errors, I sent corrections on March 5, and then I spent months chasing them: emails on 3/16, 3/28 and 4/27 with no reply, an auto-reply saying they couldn't address anything "not related to 2025 taxes," and a $200 rush-fee warning while they were the ones holding my return. On our May 8 call they told me the corrections were done. In September the portal still had the untouched February draft. The corrected business return finally showed up on September 24, the day before their own deadline for my personal documents. The personal return they prepared in October had three errors we caught ourselves, including deductions for things we never paid, and it showed a balance due when the correct result is a refund. When we asked them to fix it and file separately, the office suggested my wife file as Head of Household, which a married couple living together can't do. Since then, two weeks of silence on two follow-ups, while my wife's student-loan deadline came and went. What bothers me most is that there was no guidance at any point. They prepared a joint return by default without ever asking about our situation. With my wife's student loans on an income-driven plan, filing separately was the better choice for us by a wide margin, and we only figured that out on our own. Nobody asked a question, nobody made a recommendation. They processed the paperwork, and not well. I'll gladly update this if they finish the returns and make it right.

My partner and I created an LLC and dissolved it shortly afterward realizing we didn't need it. We…read morecollected no revenue, did no business, didn't employ anyone. A zero tax filing was all we needed. We sent our zero-tax filing to the FTB and after getting a bill with almost $700 in late fees we realized we sent the form with the wrong date - 2023 instead of 2024. We called San Diego, CPA to get some help on filing an amendment to this document. They tried to charge us $850 to file this amendment - an amendment we later realized involves changing a single number and checking the "amended return" box on our 568 Form. Inflation is bad but who knew five minutes of labor, printer ink, and postage cost so much! If my partner and I took the experts at San Diego, CPA at their word we would have wasted $850 for something we easily could do ourselves. Instead of trying to actually help us, San Diego, CPA tried to take advantage of our lack of domain knowledge and make a quick buck. San Diego, CPA caused both me and my partner considerable stress and I highly discourage people from conducting business with them.
