Truly Persian food, aromatic and generously served. Excellent tea, sweets, and saffron ice-cream. Beautiful atmosphere. Highly recommended.

A very popular and quite understated place I feel. With a very good selection of (amoung many…read moreothers) barbecue foods served with a side of your choice, there's also some great salads, and of course rice to complement your meals. The steaks are always very juicy, and are one of the most popular things on the menu. But if your more of a white meat kind of person then go for some fish! YOu can also garunatee that there is a good choice of quality locally produced sourced food, which is always good for local business and economy. You get a 10% discount if you are having a takeaway which is another cheeky bonus! Check it out!

It's worth a trip to Shiraz simply for the food, which is fantastic. A large choice of Persian…read moredishes, with very well-balanced flavours, and in good quantity, too. Then there's the host -- Ali, I think -- friendly and welcoming, and really knows his way around the tastes. Happy to recommend something, or explain the way to get the most out of the dish you've chosen ("try it without the lime first, but then crush the lime into the stew; it completely changes the texture...") The prices are pretty keen for what you get, too -- it's not stunningly cheap, but my parents came away pleasantly surprised by last night's bill, finding it good value for money. Well worth a trip, and fantastic if you happen to live in Hotwells; having this sort of restaurant within walking distance is a real benefit to the area.

The experience was fine. We appreciated that the waitress was willing to go to the kitchen to ask questions about food allergies, and she made sure that everything we ordered was gluten free. However, the service overall was slow and a little scattered. We had to ask multiple times for water glasses and for our change at the end of the meal. The food itself was all right. I don't know much about Persian food, so I don't have much of a basis for comparison, but I thought it tasted good. I got brave and tried a yogurt drink called doogh, which I didn't like at all (think "cheese" rather than an Indian restaurant's "mango lassi" and you'll be on the right track), but that's not their fault. So-so service combined with food that was nice but not exciting equals three stars from me. I wouldn't go out of my way to avoid Mowlana in the future, but I'm not seeking them out again.

However in the last two to three years we have been going less and less. The reason for this is mainly the quality of food has gone down. I know this restaurant is very popular with British customers but unfortunately as there are no other Persian restaurants in Cardiff they think Persian cuisine is what they get served at this restaurant. I took my family again last night after a year as we were hoping the food had improved but sadly starting from the starter (MIRZA GHASEMI & DOLMEH) to our main BARG it was again disappointing. The Barg was covered with Turmeric which for non Persians/Iranians if put on Kebabs by Chefs to cover the smell and taste of meat that is not fresh. After the taste of Turmeric fades you can smell and taste the meat, not Cool. I would have rather spoken to the Manager but didn't want to spoil it for my family. I won't be returning for at least another year.
