Wonderfully located near public transit, that fabulous shopping center, and a decently-sized car…read morepark, the Unley library is well worth getting home late. The children's area is particularly well organized in a way that shows you that they know their audience. My little dude quickly found books from his favorite authors. The toys, the colors, the collections.... brilliant. There seems to always be something interesting happening and you'll probably see me there later during the upcoming Umbrella Festival.

I love libraries (probably because I love books. Der...) and I was stoked when I discovered Unley…read morewas my new local. It has a modern fit out and a lot to offer over two levels. One of the most popular services is the membership-based toy library. There are an array of games, learning toys, puzzles, role play, dress ups and larger items for inside and outside play. The library has a large children's area, half filled with rows of books while the other half is an open space and regularly hosts book readings and activities sessions for children under five. It's a lovely space to sit and read to your child or enjoy your own book while your child places with the large foam square and mushroom stools. In addition to the usual selection of books, the library offers 'Hot Reads' - the latest books available for 10 days instead of four weeks for those that can speed read and get it back on the shelves for the next person. You can't reserve these and it's pot luck if you find one. There is a large table offered both upstairs and downstairs which most people utilise to read the daily papers. I have also just discovered a quiet study room upstairs with booths conducive to working or writing a uni paper. The library offers wi-fi for personal laptops. Ask at the counter for the necessary form and you'll be given a login and password. There are also a bank of computers you can book for an hour at no charge. These are popular and usually need to be booked in advance which I think you can do online. Otherwise, you can call ahead and ask for one to be reserved.

I really miss this place. I have a terrible suspicion I borrowed a book from here years ago, lost…read moreit, and then moved house, and now I probably owe hundreds in overdue fines. Being, by nature, a wuss, I'd rather miss out on an excellent library rather than resolve the issue. This is one of the biggest public libraries in Adelaide and they have a really nice kids area at the back. The kids can sit at the window and ponder life (haha) while the adults can study at the other end. The library is also next to a cafe so you can get your books and then mosey over for a coffee and a muffin after. I found that new release novels appeared on the list here much quicker than most public libraries. These guys are really on top of the latest books. I used to always sneak into the justice of the peace room to study, which had an absolutely massive gorgeous old desk, and the room was completely silent and no-one ever came in. Can you still do that? That was a sweet desk.

The Library in Burnside is quite decent. There is a broad range of fiction and non-fiction books,…read moreaudio and visual electronic material as well as PC's and internet available. The collection is updated quite frequently with new texts as as they are published. The library carries both modern fiction and literature and the classics. There is a children's section and a section containing foreign language books and magazines, mainly Asian language materials, but also some for European Languages. The Non-Fiction section is quite good and contains useful books on a broad range of subjects. There are large sections on Art and History. As well as some science and sporting materials among others. Study desks are located near the front of the building to the right. There are also small tables and chairs at the end of the aisles for perusing.

This library is tiny and surprisingly comprehensive. There are five or six computers for use by…read moremembers (I think the general public can make 'guest' bookings also). These computers share a printer, which can also be used as a scanner. My favourite facilities here are that they have all the daily papers available for reading in a relatively comfy lounge area. They also have a fairly big DVD collection which comes in handy as there is no local video store. The foyer boasts a host of free street press to keep you updated with what's on around town. Incidentally - they also have an extensive collection of self help books which may be due to its location directly opposite the Hutt St Centre for Adelaide's homeless and vulnerable residents. Hutt St Library is just one amongst several City Council run libraries and once you have a card you are entitled to borrow also from North Tce, Tynte St and Grote St locations.
