Having lived in Cary, NC for at least 2 years, we have our fair share of great Indian restaurants. I was really curious to try the Indian food in Luzern Switzerland. We stayed at Hotel Des Alpes and it was a quick walk to Mirch Masala. We got the lunch buffet for around 15 CHF. Which is not bad considering it is a buffet and we are in Switzerland. First of all, one of the things that always disappoint me in most Indian buffets is the lack of good vegetable dishes. Most times you just get either fried veggies or a cold salad. But this place had a big pot of flavorful veggies (not deep fried) that just tasted great and gets you your daily serving of veggies. Another great dish was the goat curry. Unlike a lot of the Indian buffets in NC, they actually put big chunks of meat in the curry, whereas where I live you find mostly bones. I highly recommend the goat curry. The place is small but cozy. Service was very friendly. I definitely recommend this place.

A visual of how small this place is... And kitschy.

My husband always wants Indian food so we found ourselves scavenging for desi food again. And this place was an adventure to find (limited access for vehicles). The food was okay, service was bountiful but lacking quality, and the ambiance was tacky. We had the chicken tikka masala, daal makhani, and two garlic naan. This place is costly, and it isn't fine dining... In my opinion, I would advise they invest in a decorator and spruce up the place to justify their pricing model. This establishment is in the cute old part of Lucerne, Switzerland, not a dive village in India.

Was craving for some spicy food and was surprised how delicious the food turned out. Lamb karahi was really good.

DON'T RECOMMEND AT ALL!!! Stay away from this restaurant! Take a look at the other lowest rated…read morereviews! This was the worst meal I had during my trip to Switzerland. My friend and I both ordered the exact same dish, chicken biryani. While I was eating, I noticed that my dish had very little chicken in it. My friend noticed that I wasn't eating and asked why. I told her that there wasn't enough chicken in my dish and that I didn't feel like eating just the rice. She then said that she had more chicken pieces in her dish and asked if I wanted some. I said no because I didn't want to take chicken from her dish. We ordered the exact same dish and paid the same price, so I expected the chicken portion to be reasonably comparable. But as you can see in the photo, her dish visibly had more chicken than mine. Mine was overwhelmingly rice with only a few small pieces of chicken. I don't understand why the portions were so different, but a chicken biryani shouldn't feel like you're paying 27 CHF mainly for rice. A chicken dish should actually have a reasonable amount of chicken in it. The restaurant employees/owner also saw that I wasn't eating and that most of the food was still on my plate. When we asked for the bill, I did mention that my dish only had a few little pieces of chicken and that I didn't want to eat just the rice, which was why I wasn't eating. Even after I explained that, they didn't apologize or offer to make any adjustment to the charge. I honestly wish I had spoken up earlier, when the staff came by and noticed that I wasn't eating, instead being upset and unhappy to be having so much for a chicken biryani that barely had any chicken! I also did not like the mint flavor in the biryani. I have never had biryani with mint in my entire life. I cook biryani myself and eat it often, including Indian, Bengali, and Pakistani versions, and this was the first time I had ever seen someone add mint to biryani. For me, the flavor just didn't feel like it went together. My friend is Vietnamese, and she mentioned that mint is used more commonly in the cuisine she is familiar with, so she didn't mind it. But personally, I did not enjoy the mint in the biryani. The chicken biryani was 27 CHF, and the soda was 4.00 or 4.50 CHF. The total came to exactly $40. I paid $40.36 for a meal that I felt was not properly served, especially when I received only a few pieces of chicken in a chicken biryani dish that cost 27 CHF. I don't think a 27 CHF chicken biryani should feel like you are paying mainly for rice. There was also a misunderstanding when we paid. My friend ended up putting the charge on her card because she thought I hadn't taken out my card, even though I had my e-wallet and card ready on my phone. I honestly wish I had been the one to make the charge on my card because I would have at least had the option to try to dispute the charge. Since the charge was made on my friend's card, I can't do that. I really regret not addressing the portion issue sooner and more directly. I did eventually explain why I wasn't eating when we asked for the bill, but I was disappointed that there was no apology or attempt to make any adjustment to the charge.

All mains were so good, can't quite rank them in terms of preference- all three were that excellent. So this time ordered 1) Salima Gosht, which was super tender lamb with chickpeas in a creamy cashew nut sauce; 2) Meen Molee, which is king mackerel from the Indian Ocean in a spicy turmeric and coconut milk sauce (the fresh beans were cut to look like chilies, a clever touch) and like the last time, again ordered the Idiappam Biriyani, which are homemade red rice noodles fried with chicken, shrimp and vegetables. My one tip would be to order the bread (wholemeal naan) with the lamb - it was so good I licked the plate clean. We also got condiments, a lovely refreshing Indian salad with tomatoes and onions spiced with a masala mix, and also mango chutney (yummy!). I also got the idlis as a side - so good! The chef later gave us a taste of this Indian white wine, made outside of Bombay and I would also order this next time as it perfectly complimented the food. Finally for dessert got the fresh mango with the homemade coconut ice-cream, just perfectly awesome taste and great way to end the meal. It was a bit pricy (140chf) but just so worth it - this is food that not only fills the belly bug also nourishes the soul.

A small restaurant with great Indian touches everywhere. We had Vegetable Pakoras (really yummy and they go fast), Papadam, Palak Paneer (spicy good) and Sambar Medu Vada (Idlis were a delicacy). Condiments such as Raita, Pickles, and Chutneys added to the rich flavors. We would recommend some yogurt on the side if you can't handle hot Indian food.
