This restaurant has some pretty bad reviews on Yelp which we didn't know when we happened upon it one late afternoon in Portovenere Italy. It's just as well because we found Miramare to be pretty good actually. Certainly nowhere near the best meal we had in Italy but it fit the bill.
We were here in October which is a bit off-season. The high season in this ocean-side locale is summer and while there were plenty of people out and about in October (and a few people even swimming), the hordes arrive in June, July and August. My guess is this is why we had a better experience perhaps than some other Yelpers; I think the chef and staff simply had more time to concentrate on the food and service.
The day we ate at Miramare we had already been driving on the coastal route in Tuscany for a number of hours stopping in one beautiful town after another. When we arrived in Portovenere we were ready for more than a snack and wanted to enjoy an alfresco meal because the day was perfect. It was seasonably warm with clear blue skies and beauty beyond compare.
Miramare is in a great location right on the water with views of both the pedestrian promenade as well as boats and water taxis. This is the location where you can hop on a water taxi to take you over to the gorgeous Cinque Terre.
When we arrived all the restaurants in the area (there are several in a row) were quite busy including Miramare. There was only one table available to us which we felt lucky to snag.
The menu is fairly extensive with a number of local seafood choices including a prix fixe menu.
We chose a prix fixe option which included a salad, pasta dish and entree. We each had a delightful mixed salad of greens which was fresh and delicious. This was followed by spaghetti with clams which I found quite good. The pasta was al dente, the sauce tasted fresh and the clams were delicious. The entree was a seafood fritto misto which had a light batter, was freshly fried and tasty and included shrimp, calamari and local fish. The house white wine was delicious quite frankly.
We had a lovely server who was attentive and very sweet. We got into a conversation with her about her wish to come to the United States to study. She was young and had grown up in the area and was just itching to get away and have an adventure. From our vantage point, we were ready to have the reverse adventure and spend a much longer time in Portovenere. The grass is always greener!
The food we ate was quite good, the views gorgeous, the service was excellent and we enjoyed the camaraderie we had with our waitperson. As busy as Miramare was in October, I can only imagine the throngs that come here in the summer beach months. That is no excuse for a restaurant to be off its game but it's the only reason I can think off for the wildly divergent points of view of dining here. I guess, try it at your own risk. read more
